Feces explosion in Mexican cilantro fields sparks partial import ban

There’s more than just cilantro in the growing fields in Mexico, and that’s caused the Food and Drug Administration to institute a partial import ban on it through August.

The move comes after health officials found human feces and toilet paper in growing fields, which have been linked to hundreds of intestinal illnesses dating back to 2012.

The FDA will focus on product coming from Puebla, and all of it will need to be manually inspected and certified before being allowed into the U.S. Cilantro from other parts of the country will need to have documentation proving it did not come from Puebla.

In the report, the FDA outlines a number of different sources for the contamination after 11 farms and packing houses were inspected by both U.S. and Mexican officials.

Conditions observed at multiple such firms in the state of Puebla included human feces and toilet paper found in growing fields and around facilities; inadequately maintained and supplied toilet and hand washing facilities (no soap, no toilet paper, no running water, no paper towels) or a complete lack of toilet and hand washing facilities; food-contact surfaces (such as plastic crates used to transport cilantro or tables where cilantro was cut and bundled) visibly dirty and not washed; and water used for purposes such as washing cilantro vulnerable to contamination from sewage/septic systems.

Both Yum! Brands, which owns Taco Bell, and Chipotle told Bloomberg they don’t expect their cilantro supply to be impacted by the ban.

I have actually seen pictures of these shallow pools. And the kinds of things dumped into them.

I process all of the fruits and vegetables that we will eat uncooked in a bleach bath.

It would be interesting if it was roughly half, or really to one side. I know to me its soap. I can see why people would enjoy it more if it was lemony tasting.

This is interesting to me. I don’t notice a ‘lemony’ taste, and I do notice a slight soapiness; but I like cilantro. It just seems to complement other flavors in Mexican food very well.

I’m in the lemony group. When buying salsa I tend to look for visible cilantro.

I won’t buy produce from Mexico, but just about all of the tomatoes found in markets come from there. That includes stores such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods that cater to a more health-conscious clientele.

I love it! I garnish my stir fries with it. Especially good with shellfish!

“The Thai hot peppers were a real surprise as well!”

I had a bag of the dried ones. I’d used all the peppers, but there were a lot of seeds left in the bag. Tossed them into a flowerbed. Man! Did I have a lot of Thai Chiles that Fall!
One great thing to do with the dried ones, is to take a few and fry them in your wok until they turn black. Take them out, crumple them up and remove as many seeds as you can. Do you stirfry in that hot-seasoned oil, then add the crumpled blackened chili. Wow! What a great spicy, smokey flavor!
WARNING! Do not breath the smoke from the wok when you’re frying the chili. You will stop breathing!

Wait! How can anyone object to this. Isn’t this organic farming of the highest order? Aren’t humans at the very top of the food chain? What could be more organic than human feces? Isn’t this what those that seek organic grown food and pay through the nose for it looking for? After all, Whole Foods has made a fortune off these people.

Ok, I suppose I lost my head for moment. We all know that cow dung, horse manure, goat crap and chicken droppings are the best organic fertilizer. Human feces just doesn’t compare to those. Good ole organic farming. Nothing gets wasted.

It’s Mexican Parsley. I do use Cilantro rarely on my Mexican Beef Soup.

Grab some Short Beef Ribs boil them. Once done, take them out and cook any veggies you want. I put zucchini, corn, potato, green peppers, and some leaf of Cilantro. When all veggies are done. Place meat in soup and let it rewarm again and walla..you got a soup that will fill you up pretty good. I like to make it during a cold winter month. =)

Most food borne illness comes from fruits and vegetables. Wash with soap and water before cutting or peeling. Leafy and other stuff gets soaked in a pot of water with 1/2 tsp hydrogen peroxide then rinsed.

Especially if the food is eaten raw!

Hey, you’re out in a field, nearest porta potty a mile away, you gotta go, no one looking.....

Two personal experiences with this mentality.

*Service tech from HVAC company decided to urinate on the side of the house. Phone call to company.

*Watched trash collector stand close to the truck in front of my driveway and urinate. My drive runs downhill toward the house. So does urine. Phone call to company and bottle of bleach.

Seems to some that the world is a huge toilet.

Mexicans building your house with a port-o-potty on the property but they prefer to poop in your attic and closets. Yes, it happened to us. In Texas.

O/T As an aside, my sister just told a Mexican shot and killed a mother with her children at a park in Painesville/Concord Ohio. Painesville is sanctuary city.

Of course it tastes like soap. They still wash their hands afterwards. They might be poor, but it isn’t like they’re dirty./s
