Theres more than just cilantro in the growing fields in Mexico, and thats caused the Food and Drug Administration to institute a partial import ban on it through August.
The move comes after health officials found human feces and toilet paper in growing fields, which have been linked to hundreds of intestinal illnesses dating back to 2012.
The FDA will focus on product coming from Puebla, and all of it will need to be manually inspected and certified before being allowed into the U.S. Cilantro from other parts of the country will need to have documentation proving it did not come from Puebla.
In the report, the FDA outlines a number of different sources for the contamination after 11 farms and packing houses were inspected by both U.S. and Mexican officials.
Conditions observed at multiple such firms in the state of Puebla included human feces and toilet paper found in growing fields and around facilities; inadequately maintained and supplied toilet and hand washing facilities (no soap, no toilet paper, no running water, no paper towels) or a complete lack of toilet and hand washing facilities; food-contact surfaces (such as plastic crates used to transport cilantro or tables where cilantro was cut and bundled) visibly dirty and not washed; and water used for purposes such as washing cilantro vulnerable to contamination from sewage/septic systems.
Both Yum! Brands, which owns Taco Bell, and Chipotle told Bloomberg they dont expect their cilantro supply to be impacted by the ban.
No es super good.
“When mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best....they’re bringing drugs.....they’re bringing crime”.....

Have you stopped at a Buc-ee’s, lately? Inside of their restroom stalls are signs, en espanol, telling folks it’s okay to *flush* your toilet paper. Yikes....I can only imagine the problems Buc-ee’s was having with that :-(
Thanks, 0bomba....for importing the third world’s best. /s
It’s part of your genetic code. Olfactory Receptor 6A2. It’s interesting in the cilantro case because it breaks down so cleanly into 2 groups of people who experience such consistent but VASTLY different tastes. We’ve known for a long time a lot of what you think tastes good or not is how your genes set you up to taste it. But usually it’s a lot more subtle, people who do and don’t like something generally agree on the flavor profile with the only real difference being if they enjoy it. Cilantro is fairly unique in that the like it group and the dislike it group experience it as two completely different tastes, but are very consistent within their groups (lemony or soapy). And we’ve found the gene responsible.
It’s a big deal in both the culinary nerd and genetic nerd communities.
Best not eat anything from South of the Border...................
I pass Buc’ees a lot, they have so many gas pumps its crazy, but I never actually went in one.
“I dont even know what cilantro is”.
You’re not missing much. IMO
Yeah, I’m a little leery.
Wash, rinse, repeat........................
Trump and Trump’s Chumps will say this is more evidence he’s right.
Well we had that cantaloupe deal here in Colorado. I would always wash melons with soap and water anyway, but that was kinda scary.
I like white vinegar to soak fruits and veggies in.
Biological warfare.
I don’t see why everyone is in an uproar.
Feces is a natural organic product.... /sarc
Seriously now,
Want fresh produce? grow your own. This CAN be done in a city apartment.
Instead of houseplants, grow a zucchini.
Want fern? grow Dill.
Want a potted plant? grow herbs.
Even if products are labeled with their origin, how do we know that those labels state the truth? I recall some organic store peeling off chicita banana labels and selling those bananas as “organic” at a higher cost. There really is no way for the consumer to verify where the products come from.
Just wrap it in a burrito.
Thanks for the explanation.
Take a look around the big veggie fields and fruit orchards here in the USA where the illegals are picking the crops.
Try to find adequate Porta-Pots with toilet paper and clean hand washing facilities with hot running water, soap, towels, etc.
When they are paid by the bushel basket how many will take the time to trudge a half mile to a dirty port-pot and back instead of ducking down right where they are?
I hate it when that happens...
