A key figure behind New Yorks statewide ban on hydraulic fracturing says that losing out on oil and gas jobs is no big deal because the industry only creates work for women as prostitutes and hotel maids.
In an April 6 lecture at the University of Pittsburgh, biologist Sandra Steingraber of New Yorkers Against Fracking described the fight over oil and natural gas development as a feminist issue.
Fracking as an industry serves men. Ninety-five percent of the people employed in the gas fields are men. When we talk about jobs, were talking about jobs for men, and we need to say that, said Ms. Steingraber in a video posted on YouTube by the industry-backed group Energy in Depth.
The jobs for women are hotel maid and prostitute, she says. So when fracking comes into a community, what we see is that women take a big hit, especially single women who have children who depend on rental housing.
Supporters of the industry swung back by citing a 2014 report from the American Petroleum Institute, which found that women filled 226,000 oil, gas and petrochemical industry jobs, or 19 percent.
The report predicts job opportunities will grow for female and male petroleum engineers, managers and others by 70,000 from 2010 to 20130.

Ms. Steingrabers comments come amid a push by environmental groups to cast hydraulic fracturing as part of the war on women, which industry critics dismiss as the latest anti-fracking tactic. Foes have also blamed fracking for an increase in bar fights and drug abuse.

Prostitutes?
What happened to the politically correct euphemism, “sex workers”?
For those who have trouble with the Washington Times loading with ads and links slowing down access, try Adblock Plus and No-script, both Firefox Add-ons.
That seems pretty intolerant and sexist towards prostitutes and maids.
“Jobs for men”? Is she supposed to be a feminist? Or is she the usual feminist hypocrite who never thinks of checking the on the percentages of women working as sewer workers?
What’s a Steingraber? Sounds like some kind of BDSM device
More women than men graduate from our universities — are none of them engineers?
Precocious leftists say the darndest things
Well yoga brings lots of fruits to the neighborhood but I don’t protest that
Even if this were true, is being a maidca better job Tha not having a job at all?
I'm sure no wives or children are supported by the men that work in the fracking industry.
If they are, I sure hope they get what they deserve... (in the dreams of Leftists everywhere)

Bitter and cynical about economic booms huh. It is to laugh. If it needs 1 second to put together a logical thought, this accusation must have needed 1/2 second to come up with.
Funny, that’s not what I have heard. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/MadeInAmerica/breaking-ground-oil-boom-draws-women-industry/story?id=16312609
A man needs a maid.
Something wrong with maids? My house could use one.
Wives! Daughters! What are you, some troglodyte PATRIARCHY MONGER?
It was these liberals who said it was so wonderful to characterize women as sexpots, and then turned around and complained about the demoralizing consequences!
Don’t confuse us with the FACTS dude.
I had no idea the three female engineers down the hall were prostitutes or maids.
When they were building the Alaska pipeline a friend of my dad’s said if he was a woman he would head for Alaska and make his F’n fortune. ;^)
According to Wikipedia, Sandra Steingraber “..is an American biologist, author, and cancer survivor in the tradition of Rachel Carson. Steingraber writes and lectures on the environmental factors that contribute to reproductive health problems and environment.” She’s 57 so she’s way past her prime ....
