WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old transgender youth, Leelah Alcorn, stunned her friends and a vast Internet audience in December when she threw herself in front of a tractor-trailer after writing in an online suicide note that religious therapists had tried to convert her back to being a boy.
In response, President Obama this week will call for an end to such psychiatric therapies aimed at “repairing” gay, lesbian and transgender youth, White House officials said. His decision on the sensitive issue is the latest example of his continuing embrace of gay rights.
In a statement to be posted on Wednesday evening alongside a WhiteHouse.gov petition begun in honor of Ms. Alcorn, Mr. Obama will condemn the psychiatric practice, sometimes called “conversion” or “reparative” therapy, which is supported by some socially conservative organizations and religious doctors. The petition has received more than 120,000 signatures in three months.
“We share your concern about its potentially devastating effects on the lives of transgender as well as gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youth,” the statement, written by Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Mr. Obama, says, according to a copy obtained by The New York Times. “As part of our dedication to protecting America’s youth, this administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors.”
In an interview on Wednesday, Ms. Jarrett said Mr. Obama was moved by the story of Ms. Alcorn’s suicide. But she said the problem went far beyond her.
“It was tragic, but I will tell you, unfortunately she has a lot of company,” Ms. Jarrett said. “It’s not the story of one young person. It is the story of countless young people who have been subjected to this.”

The referenced article overlooks that states have never amended the Constitution to expressly protect LGBT issues. So if lawlass Obama really wants to protect such issues within the framework of the Constitution then this is what he must do.
Obama must work with Congress to propose an LGBT rights amendment to the Constitution to the states. And if the states choose to ratify Obama's amendment then LGBT rights will be constitutionally protected and Obama will be a hero.

Not true. Psychopaths are incapable of feeling empathy for others. They usually fake emotion to make others think that they are human.
Just when you think this administration can’t get more bizarre — they get more bizarre.
A shame real doctors have decided to treat the mentally ill with surgery. Leaving parents with nothing but quacks and “pray the gay away”, which doesn’t work. Serious mental illnesses need real treatment.
what America needs is conversion therapy to convert anti-American pro homosexual/muslim/communists into loyal Americans !
I hate “wishing my life away”, but I can’t wait to see this jackass leave the White House.
Mental illness, psychological problems, moral and religious conflict, depression and manic -depressive events , sexual and domestic violence, depression, self worth and self esteem issues, substance abuse, STDs, and a generally unhealthy lifestyle leading to varying degrees of chronic unhappiness are the hall marks of the gay culture.
Not to mention sexual perversion - massive sexual perversion on a scale that is hard to believe or comprehend when a population reaches a San Francisco sized critical mass of gay members.
When I lived in the San Francisco area , we helped care for friends who were terminal AIDs cases and the stories they told about the Castro Gay lifestyle scene were an eye opening experience.
I'm no angel or holier than thou judgmental type, but just damn, was I and all the rest of the helpers appalled, even some of the more normal and conventional gays.
Josh Alcorn never said he was in conversion therapy, & his therapist has said he never did that. How does this cr*p get around?
