Viewership was down in the third and fourth quarters
It might be time for cable to start worrying about online streaming. The Wall Street Journal reported that a drop in TV ratings and viewership can be chalked up to subscription-based streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.
People familiar with the Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau told the newspaper that as much as 40% of TV-rating declines in the third and fourth quarters were attributable to streaming services. The news comes as TV viewing has declined by an estimated 10% from a year previously in the third quarter, and by 9% for the fourth quarter year-over-year, according to the Journal, citing Nielsen data.
“We believe the U.S. television industry is entering a period of prolonged structural decline, caused by a migration of viewers from ad-supported platforms to non-ad-supported or less-ad-supported platforms,” according to Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Todd Juenger in a March 9 statement.
According to the Journal, Scripps Networks Interactive chief revenue officer Steve Gigliotti said that working with Netflix once “sounded like a good idea, but “now there are some serious misgivings about it.”
Netflix reported fourth quarter earnings in January, posting big gains. The company reportedly finished 2014 with a 26% gain in revenue in the year’s last quarter, while over four million people subscribed. Netflix notched $1.48 billion in revenue during the quarter, up from $1.18 billion last year. Profits also rose 72% year-over-year for the fourth quarter to $83.4 million, or $1.38 per share.
Meanwhile, HBO announced a streaming service that will begin as an exclusive partnership with Apple. Plans were unveiled at a March 9 event, featuring the Apple Watch. While HBO Go will cost $14.99 per month and require access to an Apple TV, Netflix costs $8.99. During the event, Apple also announced it’d be reducing the price of the Apple TV to $69 from $99.

I thought the media powers that be declared Netflix dead a few short months ago.
They acknowledge the reason is because they are only available on Cable and you must purchase a premium package to get it.
So they decide to make it more available on the net without having to pay for cable. Their big plan is to be exclusive to Apple for three months (during the entire season) and you must buy one of their products to watch it on the internet.
hahahah Yeah that will stop pirating of your show...
Morons.
Blame advertising-supported media for that problem. Advertisers don't want to pay to reach you. Networks air shows that bring in advertiser dollars, and overall ratings don't enter into it.
It will be interesting to see how Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ does when it debuts exclusively on Netflix next month...
A new AppleTV unit ($69) and three months of HBO ($30 - $15/mo with 1st month free) will still be under the average monthly cable bill. People holding onto cable primarily for HBO might very well consider that to be a good deal.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better written show, which is actually an updated version by the original writer from a show that aired 20 years ago.

The only Time I lose netflix is if my cable internet goes completely down which is very seldom. maybe three times a year for any down time more than 10 minutes.
Is there a way to get rid of cable and just do Netflix over Wi-Fi?

Get a Chromecast, Roku or Apple TV, you can then stream Netflix to your TV.

I totally agree. And now they are getting squeezed, tough on them!
And now the same exact thing is happening to land-line phones. My Centurylink bill keeps going up, no matter what I do. They probably figure if somebodys gonna be willing to pay 120 bux a month for mobile service, then they should be able to charge that much for landline.
Pretty soon, there WILL be an alternative. And even customers like me who have had a landline forever will just get PO’d and say Eff U!
Maybe one of you can tell me what exactly is netflix? I thought it was a movies only download kind of thing.
For the past two years Mr. OG has called the cable company when our bill suddenly went up $30 each time with no notice. Twice he talked them down into giving us the promo price or else we were going to look elsewhere (dish), I don’t know how long we can keep this up. We like our Fox news and western channel (we pay huge for the western channel because we have to buy the HD pkg with it or something like that).
Hmm, I guess people want to choose what to watch instead of watching drivel between impotence commercials? I’m shocked. Who could have seen that coming? Next someone will get the hair-brained idea that most people only have cable so they can watch sports.
You'd need some connection to the outside internet. Lots of devices can do Netflix without a cable subscription (AppleTV, Roku, Kindle Fire TV, most modern BD-players, and many newer "smart" TVs), but you still need an outside internet provider.
I get ME-TV over the air here near San Diego. I get 6 channels with my $90 antenna. Haven’t had cable for over 14 months.
Our reason for not watching is 400 plus channels and never anything worth watching.
