(Newser) As many as three million Americans may be allergic to peanuts, the Huffington Post has reported, with one study suggesting that the number of kids with the allergy doubled between 1997 and 2002. But those who are affected may have a reason to smile: A new study could point the way to a cure for the condition, the Australian Associated Press reports via the Guardian. For a year and a half, 30 kids with the allergy were given peanut protein plus a probiotic every day; another 30 received a placebo, researchers at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute report.
The amount of the probiotic, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, stayed the same throughout the study; it was the amount you'd get from eating a whopping 44 pounds of yogurt every day, the AAP notes. The amount of peanut protein given per day was gradually increased. "Astoundingly," researchers say, by the end of the study, 80% of kids with allergies getting the treatment could "tolerate peanut." Only 4% of the placebo group could. "Many of the children and families believe it has changed their lives; theyre very happy," says a researcher. "These findings provide the first vital step towards developing a cure for peanut allergy and possibly other food allergies." Experts are planning further research to look at longer-term effects. But, the researcher says, don't try it at home: Some kids had serious allergic reactions during the course of the study.
None of our local schools use fountains anymore. They were shut off (I don't know if they removed them yet) because of lead in the pipes. Since then, children bring bottled water to school.
Me too.
There were always a few people with peanut allergies around but it was never quite so dire.
I'm wondering if it's the same amount there always was, but people are more vocal about it.
Fat free milk and chocolate milk, but the high school kids buy soda. Fat free milk is a scam, though. I don’t blame them for not drinking it, but diet soda is not the answer. Their choice.
Same amount, yes, that’s my opinion as well.
However, when you can force everyone else to alter their behavior to cater to the tiny minority, that fits the leftist MO to a T.
I would be interested to know if the allergy returned after treatment stopped.
How would one tell?
Eat some PB?.............
Loopy germ freaks.
I know of one girl who is so allergic that she drank from a soda can after someone who had been eating peanuts and had an allergic reaction.
I finally saw Mac and Cheese served from a box at Thanksgiving. It looked like worms. Horrifying. But kids love hot dogs. Everything in moderation or you’ll grow up like me - gorging on all the junk food. Throughout my 20s I ate bad food to compensate for living with a health nut as a kid.
I remember hearing of a man, several years ago, a musician of some note, cello, IIRC, had the allergy and was at a dinner party and started choking on some food. He passed out and someone who had just eaten some peanuts gave him mouth to mouth resuscitation. He went into toxic shock and died............
Good news for Mrs. Buckeye, whose peanut allergy is potentially fatal.
My oldest two were offered hot dogs last summer. They each took a bite and grimaced. Luckily I had brought fresh guacamole and organic blue corn chips to the party. They happily munched on that instead of the “kid food” that was served. When we eat out they order grilled salmon with baked sweet potatoes, cinnamon only. They beg for cashews and bananas at snack time. They are six, three, and 17 months.
It's probably vaccines.
From 6-36 months, the immature human immune system is designed to latch on to and react strongly against certain foreign proteins (measles, mumps, chicken pox, diptheria, tetanus, polio, etc).
Deprived of its natural targets by vaccines, there must be something about the relevant peanut protein complexes that looks like a target.
My 17 year old has severe peanut allergy, this looks promising.

Well, it’s nice your kids won’t touch “junk food” like hot dogs - delicious if kosher. The great food writer Laurie Colwin turned into an organic cook in the late 1980s assuring Gourmet readers that her little girl adored arugula and homemade yogurt. Well, the great Colwin died at a very young age and her daughter grew up into a journalist. And, yes, she’s written that, in fact, she despised all the terrible food her mother served her!
I do recommend her books “Home Cooking” and “More Home Cooking” - there’s plenty of good recipes sandwiched in between Brewer’s Yeast Delight and Broccoli Rape Fritters.
And to each his dietary own, lol.
Closer to 200.
Maybe they’re spraining ankles walking to the nearest store to buy a “real” soda, lol.
I think they blame the sodium phosphate in sodas combining with magnesium, zinc, and calcium in your gut and not letting them get to your bones. It matters not if it is diet or regular.
I’m 99% sure you missed a zero (150-200/year)...
