Hanging out at the mall instantly became less cool for teenagers on Monday, when Franklin Park Mall officials said that anyone 17 or younger must be accompanied by an adult on mall property after 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Mall officials said the new policy is not a response to any specific event and is a proactive move taken after conducting research among shoppers, retailers, and the Toledo community. But the change follows a weekend incident where police tried to remove a large group of people from the mall when a fight broke out, leading to several arrests and a minor injury to a police officer.

In recent weeks, large groups of teenagers have caused ruckuses in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Chicago-area malls, prompting some to place similar restrictions on teens.
It seems like theres been more than normal over these last few weeks, with tensions high and social media playing a part, Franklin Park Mall spokesman Julie Sanderson said. But our [policy] isnt a reaction to anything or any event. This is about years of the community asking for this.
Such parental-escort policies are not new for malls, said Malachy Kavanagh, a spokesman for the New York-based International Council of Shopping Centers. Minneapolis Mall of America, the countrys largest mall, was one of the first to implement such a policy in 1996, prompting complaints from some that the decision was at least in part racially motivated....

The downtown mall in Cleveland has done this for quite a few years. If the suburban malls do the same, people might actually be willing to go to them.
Cue the Watermelon Boy....
Cause - Thats Racist!
We used to wander the mall when I was a teenager but never got into any rioting, smash and grab, or gunplay.
What’s racially motivated? Teenagers are hyper and do stupid things, especially when its’ just them. I know because I was one. I know because I got hospitalized twice, and luckily not killed during that time. Did the stupid skateboard stunts, spud cannons, you name it, perhaps the one good thing I did do was not have sex with a woman or girl when I was a teen.
Really, no Spud Guns? No borrowing the skeletons and organs from the School Bio Lab? No labeling a bunch of pigs 1, 3, and 4? and laughing when someone asked where number 2 was? Yeah, I was an idiot, but not homicidal.
Thank your daddy....................These ‘teens’ don’t have that ability..................
It’s not racist - it’s ageist.
About the worst we ever did in the mall was get a little snotty with mall security which in itself was pretty rare in the 80s.
For "some", everything is racially motivated.
Yeah, I didn’t cause trouble in the malls, but setting up a dining table with the Biology Lab skeletons, Biology Lab Organs, and the cafeteria table was harmless, funny, and classy!
Isn’t that the truth.
I love the media use of the terms “teens,” and “youths.”
Suburban Milwaukee Mall same type of restrictions
Mayfair Mall patrons under 18 will have to be accompanied by an adult after 2 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, under new rules announced by mall officials this afternoon.
...Under the new rules, anyone under 18 must supervised by an adult 21 or over at the mall or the AMC theater after 2 p.m. Adults can supervise no more than four youths at one time.
The restrictions also will apply to the AMC movie theater, which has been a source of trouble at the mall. Parents will no longer be allowed to drop off children at the theater after 2 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
This in response to a single adult in the midst of 50 or more otherwise unaccompanied 'youths'.
Is “teenagers” the usual code word for you-know-who in this case, or is it really an age group rather than another demographic?
Truth be told, they're both media-inspired euphemisms for the 'enn' word. For when you want to say ______ but just haven't got the sac.
True story.
The picture of the teens on the article shows one thing, but I suspect it’ll might be the other.
