The massive circular structure appears to be an archaeologist's dream: a recently discovered antiquity that could reveal secrets of ancient life in the Middle East and is just waiting to be excavated.
It's thousands of years old -- a conical, manmade behemoth weighing hundreds of tons, practically begging to be explored.
The problem is -- it's at the bottom of the biblical Sea of Galilee. For now, at least, Israeli researchers are left stranded on dry land, wondering what finds lurk below.
The monumental structure, made of boulders and stones with a diameter of 230 feet, emerged from a routine sonar scan in 2003. Now archaeologists are trying to raise money to allow them access to the submerged stones.
"It's very enigmatic, it's very interesting, but the bottom line is we don't know when it's from, we don't know what it's connected to, we don't know its function," said Dani Nadel, an archaeologist at the University of Haifa who is one of several researchers studying the discovery. "We only know it is there, it is huge and it is unusual."

As farmers removed the stones from their fields, they haled them to the lake and dumped them
over time the dump took on the appearance of a purpose built conical man made structure

Remnants of the Slate Construction Company gravel pit?
I was thinking Sodom and Gomorrah - thought I read once that the dead sea was a result of their destruction....but not sure may have just been unsalty before or something...
They’ve know about this for a decade and the top is 3 feet under water. What’s keeping them from wading around the top? They don’t need a boatload of money to do that.
They gotta be angling for American money.
This was mapped and photo’ed in 2003. Go a little deeper into the story and find the locals have always known about it and other similar (if smaller) underwater rock piles.
Why not set them on the side of the lake then, or make walls with the stone to delineate the property line?
The depth is reported as 9 to 40 feet, but not a word about the "worm" thingie traversing the entire image...
????
hehe
It’s a composite image. The distortion reveals the path of the equipment.

...”The more logical possibility is that it belongs to the third millennium B.C., because there are other megalithic phenomena [from that time] that are found close by,” Paz told LiveScience in an interview, noting that those sites are associated with fortified settlements.
The researchers list several examples of megalithic structures found close to the Sea of Galilee that are more than 4,000 years-old. One example is the monumental site of Khirbet Beteiha, located some 19 miles (30 kilometers) north-east of the submerged stone structure, the researchers write. It “comprises three concentric stone circles, the largest of which is 56 m (184 feet) in diameter.”

They didn’t want fences or blocking lake access with rocks
What about damage to their propellers?
