I’m tossing my meager supply of frozen and refrigerated food into a bag, packing my laptop and some clothes, and heading to my cousin’s in the far NW suburbs of Philly. He has a generator and a pool. If he has juice, I’ll work remotely from his place Monday. If not, day off. I can guarantee power will be out for a stretch where I live with all the old trees in the neighborhood.

Stocked a weeks worth of water and non perishable food (well we keep much more food than that anyways so really didn’t do anything for food)
Filled three cars with fuel, one five gallon fuel take also.
Two full propane tanks for gas grill
Withdrew $1000 in cash from the bank
Checked the functionality of the 12.5KW back up generator
Procured a new LED flashlight
Filled oil lamps
Insured I have adequate adult beverages
Lined bottom front of garage door with bags of mulch
Prepared a ready bag with essentials (meds, tools, etc)
Stocked my elderly parents with the same

The only thing wrong and it doesn’t hurt is that taping the windows does no good.

I was born and grew up in Florida. I remember one in the 70’s which blew down all the old oaks in my parents yard but did no damage to the house at all.

Fill up your bathtubs. You may have to use silicone caulk to seal the drain. You can save plenty of usable water for later if you need. Don’t forget if your plumbing goes you won’t be able to flush the toilets! Having extra water in the tubs will fill the tanks nicely and anything you don’t want sitting around too long will go bye-bye!

Also, turn the air conditioning down NOW. You should be able to get enough cool air into the house that if you lose electricity you’ll still retain the coolness. Hurricanes are usually cold but when they pass and the sun comes out it will be STEAMY and if you lose electricity for a/c it will get ugly very fast. Most only run fans and their refrigerator with a generator unless you are lucky enough to have a whole house generator backup.

All outside stuff secured or put in the garage.

Plenty of batteries and diesel. Cars gassed up.

Gutters cleaned. Ice stockpiled. Flashlights and candles all around. 55 gallon barrel full of water for the toilets.

2 months SHTF food already ratholed. 75 bottles of wine in the cellar. A weeks worth of cigars on site.

Am I missing anything?

Is it within the realm of possibility that weather forecasters and weather networks are EXAGERATING the severity of Irene ? In otherwords, are they "bumping" UP Irene from a Category 1 to a Category 2 or Category 3 ?

Irene should be taken seriously but, I have personally witnessed Irene classified as a Category 4 earlier today by the WeatherNetork.com Irene was then DOWNGRADED to a Category 3 later on this afternoon.

I don't trust the LEFT. I don't trust Obama and his hacks in the MSM including those delivering the "news" about the weather.

Also get extra propane for gas grills or briquets for the bbq. If your power goes out you can grill what you have in the freezer and it will last longer.

Get the cars into the garage, loosen the lines on boats if you can’t take them out of the water. If you don’t have room to store your patio furniture indoors, throw it into the pool so it doesn’t get blown around.

Trim your trees if you have overhanging branches.

Prepare for a hurricane party!

I live in Southern NJ about 40 miles inland from Long Beach Island. We're expecting 5-10 inches of rain and sustained winds up to 60mph. The folks here are dangerously complacent as we haven't had such a storm in over 50 years. My wife and I just finished visiting all 55 houses in our development urging our neighbors to secure outdoor furniture, umbrellas, toys etc. No one here seems to realize the dangerous posed by these items if they become airborne.

The Southern NJ barrier Islands will be devastated if this storm tracks as predicted.

I’m in Maryland and my husband has done most of it (Bless his heart). He fired up the generator to make sure that was working and purchased a new chain for his chain saw. I have plenty of food and extra water. Flashlights have brand new batteries, a few battery powered candles as well. Just for my own SANITY, I purchased a few items to keep the younger kids occupied in case the power goes out. For example, the girls have two little bird houses they can paint and a few other craft type items. (I fully understand that crafts aren’t for survival... Just Mom’s state of mind). Please keep safe FReepers... prayers for those near the shores. God bless!
