Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

Yeah, I assume the A/C units would be turned off to aid the search (less noise). They may also request that they be turned off so that a roaming shooter doesn't know which homes are inhabited (avoid hostage taking).

Is the entire Fort Hood area a "gun free" zone?

Yes, most military installations are "gun free" zones; that includes concealed carry. Arms are locked in armory, with access only to arms room NCOIC and CO. May keep guns in housing, but since it is a fed crime to carry in federal buildings (e.g. workplace) you won't find anyone carrying even if liscensed.

Idiot reporters. FBI not needed at HOOD. I assure you that the soldiers who live there are “capable” of dealing with this. Whoever the perps are. If they are Middle Eastern or sympathetic, they know how to handle it.

If it's terrorism, it's the FBI's job to deal with it. After all, the soldiers who live there aren't set up to manage and run a nation-wide undercover investigation....
