ACCRA, Ghana – The lucky ones saw him waving from behind the bulletproof glass of his passing vehicle for a few fleeting seconds. The others, like the rest of the world, just watched President Barack Obama's visit on TV.
Despite the huge excitement and anticipation surrounding Obama's first trip to sub-Saharan Africa as president, only relatively small crowds came out to meet him in Ghana's capital. The absence of any big public event outdoors, heavy security that blocked roads, and uncertainty over which routes Obama might take combined to keep large crowds away.

No. I don’t remember people lining up for blocks in the hot sun, waving flags, smiling, cheering, etc. to greet President Bush. I’m certain that you must be mistaken.
If the Media didn’t cover it, it didn’t happen. /SARCASM
Good grief, I mean Ghana is practically next door to Obama’s birthplace (Kenya). Have they no regard for a fellow African?
Better hand out more of our money tomorrow to get a bigger crowd, -7bama.
I heard he promised 68 billion? One and a half times their annual GDP? Didn’t see the source.
What?!
I thought the whole country couldn't wait for his coming and for his arrival riding on his ass. I thought they would be lining his route by the millions.
What happened?
So the ACORN rep in Ghana forgot to do his job and bribe the locals, eh?
He’s a chickensh*t!
What, they don’t like Kenyans?
ROTFL!
Small crowds for a small man.
Thanks for the notice about Bush. I am certain the LameStream Media missed this.
Apparently they don’t have a large Establismedia.
Pray for America
” When former President George W. Bush visited Accra last year, he also spoke to tens of thousands gathered at Independence Square.”
Bill Clinton nearly caused a stampede in 1998.
Apparently there were longer lines at McDonalds getting burgers than greeted Barry.
I thought of Clinton too, he was almost crushed to death by adoring throngs. Maybe the second black American president isn’t that big of a deal to them.
I might be able to give some insight on this. Ghanans are West Africans. West Africans feel a kinship with African-Americans because most African-Americans can claim some sort of western ancestry. Barry’s Kenyan, an east African. He really doesn’t look like a West African. They really have nothing in common with Barry other than they were both born in Africa. They probably see Barry as a fraud passing himself off as what he isn’t; an African-American with West African ancestry.
Also, Kenya and Ghana are on the opposite sides of Africa, which makes this visit even more of a farce. The people of Ghana know a publicity stunt when they see one.
Looks like the sub-saharans have things like famine, pestilence, and AIDS to concern themselves with, not the latest stop on the Obamas Extreme Makeover World Tour.
What's wrong with that sentence?
I mean, c'mon! Obama should have the entire continent eating out of his hand. Right?
Maybe they remember his earlier campaign stop with Odinga?
this goes right along with it
In their eyes, he is American and half-white, and it's America's fault for the global economic crisis (in their view).
It doesn’t matter what his ancestry was, he’s an American culturally.
My mom went to Africa years ago (Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso). She had no problem telling the Africans from the African-Americans, based on body language alone. Americans walk and carry themselves in a certain way. I’m sure the Africans pick up on that.
I think we will be better off in race relations when African-Americans (and all the other hyphens) realize that the people in the world they most resemble and have common cause with, are other Americans.
