Pelosi frustrated by Senate [Spector, Snowe & Collins threaten to pull out. Kill Porkulus]
Politico ^ | 02/11/2009 | By GLENN THRUSH

Nancy Pelosi had heard enough, thank you very much, after two enraged House Democrats rose at Tuesday’s caucus meeting to bitterly denounce the Senate’s take-it-or-leave-it offer on the stimulus.

It wasn’t because Pelosi wasn’t ticked off herself — quite the opposite.

“At a certain point, after a couple of members had expressed themselves, she asked that future speakers not address that issue because it was reminding her how angry she was,” said Rep. Anthony D. Weiner (D-N.Y.), who was in the room.

When Pelosi emerged from behind closed doors a few minutes later to address the press, she wore the broadest possible smile on her face. But her words expressed the grimmest possible resolve, as she girded for a conference committee battle on the stimulus destined to yield, at best, partial victory.

“Usually you go to conference and split the difference between the two houses — that may not be the case here,” Pelosi said. “At these conferences, my experience has been that the White House has a seat at the table — that they weigh in.”

Both Obama and Pelosi are hoping to restore significant stimulus spending eliminated by the Senate, especially $21 billion in school construction and technology grants, $10.3 billion in COBRA insurance and $8.6 billion in new Medicaid coverage for the unemployed.

The Senate passed its $830 billion stimulus bill Tuesday — but it wouldn’t have passed at all without the support of three moderate Republicans and a conservative Democrat who helped the Democratic majority obtain the 60 votes necessary to stop a filibuster.

Majority Leader Harry Reid’s solution has created its own set of problems for the speaker. Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) all have publicly insisted that the measure emerge more or less unchanged...

"Probably a good idea to call the Republican Senators who voted against this to offer encouragement to do it again, too... "

I've emailed both my senators this morning to remind them they serve with the consent of the governed, and expressing my anger at their support of porkulus. Unfortunately, I have no representation in Washington, since my senators are Specter and Casey.

I may be overly optimistic, but I have this feeling that the little zer0 will be eaten by his own, and will be neutered within two years ... caused by millions of Americans falling from the ladder they have struggled so hard to climb.

It probably won't sit well that Congress and the administration has fleeced them, only to give it to themselves, and the many millions of the non producers & scammers.

Maybe some of the moderate (or not as liberal) Dems would think twice about voting for a bill that socializes health care and throws grandma and grandpa under the bus.

Will the Senate need 60 votes for final passagez
Yes, they need 60.

_____________ __________ _______

The current rule of 60 votes for passage was made when the “stupid” republicans made a deal with the minority democrats when the Republicans had the majority of both the House and the Senate. Who knows how long that will last though.

In hindsight, guess it could save our neck now that we’re in the minority. Like I said, my guess is that this will change... soon.

“I can’t imagine that three Republicans would deny what the president wants at the end of the day,” said a top House Democratic aide, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Translation: We know these three will roll over and show their belly on command, no matter what.

They first need 60 votes for cloture, but after that they only need a simple majority.

If Spector and Collins vote no on cloture, then it’s killed . . . for a while. Don’t kid yourself, though - the Dims will keep bringing it up, or close cousins of it, from now until they pass it. Or until they lose the majority.

Pelosi is her own worst enemy. If she digs in her arrogant heels on this "thing," she'll blow the whole Senate deal sky high, which is exactly what we want.

If that happens, then watching the fall-out should be fun once the Rats start pointing fingers and tearing each other to shreds.

I becoming more and more convinced that Obama wants this bill to fail. He'll never publicly admit it, of course, but we all know he really only cares about being re-elected. This bill will not help anything and he knows it.

Laughable that it would remain unchanged after conference. One can only hope that the three stooges (with apologies to the real three stooges) keep their word and cause a nuculer (W) reaction in the Senate and House. Far better than letting this pelosi egg hatch.
