Nancy Pelosi had heard enough, thank you very much, after two enraged House Democrats rose at Tuesdays caucus meeting to bitterly denounce the Senates take-it-or-leave-it offer on the stimulus.
It wasnt because Pelosi wasnt ticked off herself quite the opposite.
At a certain point, after a couple of members had expressed themselves, she asked that future speakers not address that issue because it was reminding her how angry she was, said Rep. Anthony D. Weiner (D-N.Y.), who was in the room.
When Pelosi emerged from behind closed doors a few minutes later to address the press, she wore the broadest possible smile on her face. But her words expressed the grimmest possible resolve, as she girded for a conference committee battle on the stimulus destined to yield, at best, partial victory.
Usually you go to conference and split the difference between the two houses that may not be the case here, Pelosi said. At these conferences, my experience has been that the White House has a seat at the table that they weigh in.
Both Obama and Pelosi are hoping to restore significant stimulus spending eliminated by the Senate, especially $21 billion in school construction and technology grants, $10.3 billion in COBRA insurance and $8.6 billion in new Medicaid coverage for the unemployed.
The Senate passed its $830 billion stimulus bill Tuesday but it wouldnt have passed at all without the support of three moderate Republicans and a conservative Democrat who helped the Democratic majority obtain the 60 votes necessary to stop a filibuster.
Majority Leader Harry Reids solution has created its own set of problems for the speaker. Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) all have publicly insisted that the measure emerge more or less unchanged...

Not a chance. Incompetents, with huge egos, who rise to a position for which they are far ill-equipped to handle always resort to emotional bullying.
Take your president as yet another example. Unaccomplished, incompetent and acerbic.
That stupid move led to Obama's current problems getting porkulus passed---AMONG DEMOCRATS.
Obama's COS Rahm Emanuel, figured by uttering the phrase "we won" meant they could get away with murder, that America would kneel in obeisance whenever they spoke. That ain't happening by a longshot.
TIPOFF was when Obama went public to explain the screw-up---nominating tax-cheat Daschle. Obama was talking to his adoring supporters----who were expecting MUCH MUCH more from him than several tax cheaters appointees, and 17 lobbyists who got jobs in his admin.
OBAMA'S BASE God-fearing Black church-goers who voted for Obama are teed-off----one of the reasons Daschle is out. Obama's adoring supporters turned the tables on him.
God-Fearing Black church-goers who voted for Obama are struggling to survive, working 2-3 jobs to feed and house their families........while tax cheats get cushy gov't jobs with perks and privileges.
We need to blast-mail Black churchgoer groups to get the word out.
You’re welcome. LOL
It’s always good to remind the sewer power scum up in Washington DC they are public servents elected.
As one thread said, didn’t Obama teach us this one thing YES WE CAN? We can and will get rid of them.
Arlen Spector and the others must have realized that their turncoating wasn’t perceived as “bi-partisan” and “getting things done in Washington” and the backlash was more than they expected.
Probably a good idea to call the Republican Senators who voted against this to offer encouragement to do it again, too...
exactly, this also let’s them know we’re STILL watching
Similar remarks by Specter prompted House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.), not known for his bellicosity, to fire back at his weekly pen-and-pad session with reporters: Im shocked that any senator of any party would say this is the bill we passed, take it or leave it.
Lets hope and pray that the three traitors are looking for a way to reverse their vote while saving their pride at the same time (their egos are so big they can't publicly admit that they are feeling pressure from their own party and their constituents.)
It would be wise for other elected office holders to remember they are also elected to serve the people.
What happened to Daschle could happen to them. Madame Pelosi included.
It's not uncommon for a Senator to approve a limit on debate (vote AYE on cloture), while expressing opposition to the underlying bill. Specter does that OFTEN.
I'm wary of the exact nature of the so-called "opposition" that these three weasels intend to offer, should the bill deviate from what they wrote.
Anybody have a link to that Fox News video in which Specter sorta, kinda indicated the Nationalized Healthcare provisions in Spendarama would be pulled from the final bill?
You do know that Nationalized Healthcare is hidden in Spendarama, don’t you?

Kerry wrecked American lives in 1971... ruined innocent military folks' reputations... unforgivable!!
Not to late for the Senators... I suggest they act now... pull out!!!
Jim, would you make a thread with all the news outlets phone numbers, emails, etc on the front page?
I think we will get more satisfaction that way. I don’t think the RINOs care what we think, as long as the media doesn’t care.
Maybe some of the moderate (or not as liberal) Dems would think twice about voting for a bill that socializes health care and throws grandma and grandpa under the bus.
“OBAMA’S BASE God-fearing Black church-goers who voted for Obama are teed-off”
Where do you get this information? And who are you talking about? The God-fering Black church-goers at Jeremiah Wright’s church?
Same here, my friend. Good to see you.
Of course. The longer the bill is available to the public, the more crap we’re starting to find. Nancy knows this, Barack knows this.
Keep the pressure on.
Running the clock some more could end up very helpful. Actuarily speaking.
Pelosi will allow the house to approve the Senate bill without changes so as not to give our three RINO’s a chance to redeem themselves.
“Don’t Doubt Me.”
I called Specter’s office a few times yesterday and the phone was simply not answered. I got the recording about the hours his office was open (yes, my calls were within the open hours).
