Al-Qaeda Draws New Recruits Via Internet

Al-Qaeda is using the Internet to recruit vulnerable young people to its terrorist network, according to a programme aired on Saudi Arabian TV late on Tuesday.

Umm Osama, the founder of al-Qaeda's first women-only website, al-Khansa, joined several others on the programme to discuss how they renounced jihadist ideology.

Among those who sought a response to this question was an imam from the Medina mosque, Saleh Ibn Awad al-Mudamsi, and the father of a young al-Qaeda suspect held in an Iraqi prison. Read More

2 Indians caught smuggling themselves into UK military base
Times of India ^ | 17 Jul 2008, 2111 hrs IST
Posted on July 17, 2008 3:37:50 PM PDT by DeaconBenjamin

LONDON: Two Indians are among five illegal immigrants who allegedly smuggled themselves into a high-security British military base on a convoy of army trucks returning from Kosovo.

Police said the Indians were between 24 and 26 years of age. The others included two Afghans between 16 and 18 years of age, and a 15-year-old Iranian. The immigrants’ names have not been goven out as yet.

Stunned soldiers had to wrestle two of the stowaways to the ground after discovering them as the vehicles returned from Kosovo on Tuesday, said reports.

Another three men leapt from the lorries in a desperate attempt to flee and were captured with the help of police officers and sniffer dogs.

After being rounded up, they were held captive by 35 battle-hardened troops before being removed to an immigration detention centre.

The stowaways are believed to have sneaked on board the convoy as it waited to cross the Channel at the French port of Calais on the way back from the Balkans.

After arriving at Dover, they remained undetected during the 272-km trip across England to the Duke of Gloucester Barracks in South Cerney, Gloucestershire.

Their hiding place was discovered during a security check at the base, which is used to move troops, weapons and vehicles to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Soldiers found two of the illegal immigrants as they removed protective canopies from the low-loader lorries at the barracks.

Army Captain Giles Cutter said: “Fortunately, there was a squadron on duty and a few burly Fijian soldiers wrestled the first two to the ground. We knew there was at least one left so we called a round-up operation.”

“Soldiers Missing From The Vietnam War Are Identified”

PRESS RELEASE SNIPPET: “The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of two U.S. servicemen, missing from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are Chief Warrant Officer Bobby L. McKain, of Garden City, Kan.; and Warrant Officer Arthur F. Chaney, of Vienna, Va., both U.S. Army. McKain will be buried on Aug. 11 in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., and Chaney will be buried Sept. 16 in Arlington.

Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the secretary of the Army.

On May 3, 1968, these men flew an AH-1G Cobra gunship on an armed escort mission to support a reconnaissance team operating west of Khe Sanh, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. Their helicopter was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire, exploded in mid-air and crashed west of Khe Sanh near the Laos-Vietnam border. The crew of other U.S. aircraft flying over the area immediately after the crash reported no survivors, and heavy enemy activity prevented attempts to recover the men’s bodies.”

Troops in Iraq Capture 14 Suspects, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 17, 2008 – Coalition and Iraqi forces caught 14 suspects and seized weapons caches in Iraq over the past three days, military officials said.

Troops detained nine suspected terrorists, including three wanted men, today during operations in Iraq targeting al-Qaida in Iraq’s financial and foreign-terrorist networks.

In those operations:

— Coalition forces in Hit, about 90 miles west of Baghdad, captured a man allegedly working with al-Qaida in Iraq to bring foreign terrorists into the country.

— Coalition troops caught a wanted man and an additional suspect in Karmah. The wanted man is believed to conspire with longtime al-Qaida in Iraq terrorists in the northern belts around Baghdad, where troops detained another suspect in a separate operation.

— Forces captured a man in Mosul believed to be involved in criminal plots to finance al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist attacks. The wanted man was detained with one other suspect.

— Coalition forces near Tikrit, about 100 miles north of Baghdad, targeted al-Qaida in Iraq terrorists who reportedly were planning to conduct attacks with poisons. Troops detained three suspects in the raid.

In the New Baghdad security district of eastern Baghdad, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained a key suspect yesterday, military officials said. Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division’s 4th Brigade Combat Team detained the suspect during a mission in the Kamaliyah area of the Iraqi capital. The suspect allegedly has planted roadside bombs, conducted indirect-fire attacks in the area, and provided finances for bombing activities.

Also in New Baghdad yesterday, the 4th Brigade Combat Team confiscated more than a dozen assault rifles during clearance operations in the eastern Baghdad district.

During operations July 15:

— Combined forces in the Sadr City district of Baghdad detained an Iranian-backed “special groups” member with an arrest warrant issued by Iraq’s Interior Ministry. The individual has attacked and killed Iraqi security and coalition forces with homemade and small-arms fire, military officials said.

— In the Jisr Diyala neighborhood of southeastern Baghdad, Iraqi special operations forces detained a suspected leader of an Iranian-backed bombing cell. The suspect allegedly is responsible for weapons trafficking, homemade bombings and an assassination plot against an Iraqi general officer.

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained a known leader of an Iranian-backed militant group during Operation Raider Nor’easter in the Rashid district of southern Baghdad. The suspect allegedly has used homemade bombs in the area, military officials said.

— Iraqi special operations forces detained a suspected al-Qaida in Iraq leader in Fallujah. The suspect, detained on a, Iraqi Justice Ministry warrant, reportedly is in charge of three al-Qaida unit commanders who that oversee some 200 terrorists.

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers seized weapons caches around the Iraqi capital. The stockpiles included artillery and mortar rounds, machine guns, pistols, rockets, explosive materials, fuses and other military equipment.

— Members of a local “Sons of Iraq” citizen security group led coalition forces to a weapons cache west of Samarra in Salahuddin province. The cache contained mortar and artillery rounds and small-arms munitions.

A court in the Astrakhan Region, south Russia, will consider a criminal case against an Uzbek man accused of trying to smuggle items into Iran used in the production of weapons of mass destruction, Russian prosecutors said.

Investigators said that in July 2007 businessman Anar Godzhayev, 39, knowingly failed to declare the metallic substances, made from tantalum, in a customs declaration form in contravention of customs regulations. Godzhayev is currently being held in custody.

California Firm Sentenced While Search for Its Fugitive Vice President Continues in Arms Export Case

LOS ANGELES – Air Shunt Instruments Inc., a California aircraft components company, has been sentenced to pay a criminal fine of $250,000 for false statements related to an export of military technology, while agents intensify their search for the company’s Vice President for International Sales, who is a fugitive and has been indicted for numerous illegal exports of military items to the United Arab Emirates and Thailand.

The developments were announced today by Thomas P. O’Brien, U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California; Rick Gwinn, Special Agent in Charge for the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) Western Field Office; and Robert Schoch, Special Agent in Charge for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Investigations in Los Angeles.

On July 15, a federal judge in the Central District of California accepted a felony guilty plea and sentenced Air Shunt, based in Chatsworth, Calif., to a criminal fine of $250,000 and a special assessment of $400 for making false statements on Shipper’s Export Declaration in claiming that a military item being shipped overseas did not require an export license, when in fact the item required such a license.

According to a Statement of Facts filed with the court, Air Shunt willfully and knowingly made a false statement in connection with a gyroscope used on military helicopters that was sent to a freight forwarder in San Diego for shipment to Thailand in 2003. The gyroscope in question is on the United States Munitions List (USML), and as such, cannot be exported without first obtaining an export license from the Department of State.

The Statement of Facts filed with the court states that John Nakkashian, a Vice President at Air Shunt, was responsible for international sales and for obtaining all required licenses for such sales at the company. The court documents further allege that Nakkashian knew it was illegal for defense articles covered by the USML to be exported without first obtaining an export license from the Department of State. During the investigation of Air Shunt, Nakkashian fled the United States and is believed to be overseas today.

In May 2008, a federal grand jury in the Central District of California returned an indictment that charges Nakkashian with four counts of violating the Arms Export Control Act. The indictment alleges that in May and September of 2003, Nakkashian illegally exported military components for the J85 engine, which is used on the F-5 fighter jet, from the United States to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, without first obtaining the required export licenses from the State Department.

The indictment further alleges that Nakkashian illegally exported a military gyroscope to Bangkok, Thailand, in November 2003 and that he illegally exported another military component to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in January 2004, without first obtaining the required export licenses from the State Department for each shipment.

According to court documents, Air Shunt took appropriate disciplinary action against Nakkashian for perpetrating the acts alleged. Furthermore, since August 2004, Air Shunt has adopted effective standards of conduct and internal control systems, including new and revised review and control procedures and ethics training programs designed to prevent or detect violations.

Nakkashian — who is being actively sought by the Justice Department, DCIS and ICE — faces a potential sentence of 10 years imprisonment for each count of violating the Arms Export Control Act. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Nakkashian is encouraged to contact the San Diego Resident Agency of DCIS at (858) 569-1497 or the ICE hotline at 1-866-DHS-2ICE.

This investigation was conducted by special agents from DCIS and ICE. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Y. Lee of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

As in all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.

Kuntar: We will free Shebaa, and beyond Shebaa
07.17.08

The five Lebanese prisoners freed by Israel in the framework of the exchange deal with Hizbullah, including Samir Kuntar, took part in a military ceremony held at the burial site of Imad Mugniyah, a top commander of the Shiite group who was assassinated in Damascus a few months ago.

The five wore Hizbullah military uniforms and kissed Mugniyah's family members. The father of the slain commander congratulated Kuntar on his release. The terrorist, who was imprisoned in Israel for nearly 30 years after being convicted of killing four Israelis during a cross-border raid on Nahariya, said in response "we owe this victory to you and Imad.

"This morning I heard that the enemy has decided to assassinate me," Kuntar told the assembled crowd. "This enemy knows me well and I want to answer it with two sentences, like the Imam Hussein, may he rest in peace, said at the time: 'You threaten me with murder, when death is customary for us and a martyr's death is an honor from Allah?'

"We swear in the name of the almighty Allah and in the name of your pure blood that we will continue in this path and never give up until we reach the place that was given to you by God," Kuntar said, referring to what is dubbed by Islamic militants as a "martyr's death".

Chertoff: European terrorists trying to enter US
July 17, 2008

WASHINGTON - European terrorists are trying to enter the United States with European Union passports, and there is no guarantee officials will catch them every time, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.

Chertoff's comments on Capitol Hill comes as the country is entering a potentially vulnerable period with the presidential nominating conventions coming up next month; the presidential election in November; and the transition to a new administration in January — all of which may be attractive targets for terrorists.

In his last scheduled appearance before the House Homeland Security Committee, Chertoff said that the more time and space al-Qaida and its allies have to recruit, train, experiment and plan, the more problems the U.S. and Europe will face down the road. "The terrorists are deliberately focusing on people who have legitimate Western European passports, who don't appear to have records as terrorists," Chertoff told lawmakers. "I have a good degree of confidence we can catch people coming in. But I have to tell you ... there's no guarantee. And they are working very hard to slip by us."

Uncommon Senate Hearing Discusses Islamist Group Agenda
July 17, 2008

An open hearing of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs bore witness to an unusually candid discussion about the Muslim Brotherhood's network in the United States. It was unusual in the respect that it was discussed at all. The fact that many major American Muslim organizations are derived from the Muslim Brotherhood is rarely addressed on Capitol Hill.

The topic of the July 10 hearing was, "The Roots of Violent Islamist Extremism and Efforts to Counter It," and the subject most discussed was Islamist ideology as the root cause of terrorism. What made this hearing significant was the extent to which the U.S.-based Muslim Brotherhood network was discussed in oral and written testimony – largely by Zeyno Baran, senior fellow and director of the Center for Eurasian Policy at the Hudson Institute.

Ms. Baran's central point was that, while not all Islamists will become terrorists, all Islamic terrorists begin with Islamist ideology. She cited the Muslim Brotherhood as the "prime example" of the spectrum of Islamist groups that, while differing in tactics, agree on their final goal: a world dominated by Islamic law, or Shariah. As such, Ms. Baran pointed out that there were inherent problems with the outreach policies of various government agencies. She specifically cited sensitivity training for the FBI run by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as "completely self-defeating" as FBI agents might be taught to be overly sensitive and may avoid asking certain questions during investigations that they should be asking.

An Argument For An Armed Citizenry (Gang Assault at Valley Fair Amusement Park)
Power Line ^ | July 16, 2008 | John Hinderaker
Posted on July 17, 2008 8:16:54 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A horrific news story has slowly made its way into the headlines here in the Twin Cities. A local resident, his wife and three daughters spent the evening of the Fourth of July at Valleyfair, a local amusement park. They were leaving the park at midnight when a criminal began to molest his twelve-year-old daughter.

The father intervened to defend his daughter, and the offender put out a call for his “homies.” Eight “men” materialized and began to beat up the father. They knocked him to the ground and took turns stomping on his head. The man’s wife and daughters tried to protect him, unsuccessfully, and Valleyfair’s security guards apparently tried to help, but ineffectually.

The father is still hospitalized, but the criminals are out on bail. The family’s name is being kept secret, lest the criminals find them and kill them to avoid prosecution.

Initially, the local media downplayed the story, presumably because of the race of the criminals. But today, the Minneapolis Star Tribune broke down and covered it. Still, the story was apparently too hot for the paper to allow comments; if you follow the link, you’ll see that, contrary to the Star Tribune’s usual policy, it is impossible to comment.

The story is an infuriating one in several ways, but what strikes me most forcibly is that it would have been a good thing if a few armed citizens had happened by while the assault was in progress. It’s no surprise that the victim’s wife and daughters couldn’t protect him from eight “men,” and apparently Valleyfair’s security force is unarmed. So the optimal outcome here would have been for one or more normal citizens to pull a firearm, shoot a couple of the criminals, and hold the rest until the police arrived. Criminals who carry out outrageous assaults in public do so on the assumption that passersby will not be able to stop them. Absent firearms, that assumption is reasonable. So let’s hear it for concealed carry.

Under Minnesota law, any business can ban guns on its premises, and, while a few minutes of research yielded nothing, I assume that Valleyfair bans guns, as most businesses that are open to the public do. This strikes me as a mistake. Against a gang such as the one that is now on the loose in the Twin Cities, only armed citizens can be effective.

“Iran: Death to non-Muslims”
Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow - 7/17/2008 10:00:00 AM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Lawmakers in Iran are considering a proposal to make the death penalty automatic for those who leave the Muslim faith.

Abe Ghafari of Iranian Christians International, Inc. (ICI) was at least a little surprised to learn the news. “Before, it was like an option that an Islamic judge could decide to use or not to use — but now it will become an automatic thing. And from the language of the legislation, it seems like something that cannot be appealed,” Ghafari contends.

The death penalty would primarily apply to those who convert to the Christian faith. “There are large numbers of conversions from Islam, maybe even in the tens of thousands every year, and this is causing concern in the Islamic circles in Iran,” Ghafari explains.

People who use the Internet to convert people away from the Muslim faith will also be subject to the death penalty.”
