Lots of people go to Christian churches that aren't even christians. It is naive to believe that everyone who claims they are a Christian really are. If a person went to last year's Mardi Gras and did a poll, most of the attendees would have listed their religion down as 'Christian'.
In many parts of the country, especially in the bible belt, being a christian and going to church is not about faith, but just part of the culture.
Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Bill Clinton go to church too and they are hardly examples of moral character.

Careful. Many times man has gone out on their own on a path and realized that they have ended up where they started. The difference between spirituality and religtion is embracing and trusting the unknown and attempting to understand the unknown. Science grew from the latter but that doesn't mean that spirtuality diminishes. God gave man reason and free will to choose his destiny(even Einstein knew this). Some goats are just too smug to realize this. The 2nd law of thermodynamics touches on this and one can surmise from there, if they are not jaded by the number of books they have read.

Bush has not governed as a conservative, IMHO, and others as well. Therefore, the straw the broke the camels back was Miers... for some that is. He's been beating the camel for 5 years.. and so, the camel finally had enough.
I'm not going to argue with you OWF. Remember, when your voice has been silenced by the loss of political free speech, remember who it was that brought it to you. Remember when your job has been outsourced because someone thinks you are too stingy, racist, nationalist, republican, Christian, white, black, rich or a hair over the poverty line to have a voice or any rights at all.. REMEMBER who brought it to you. What it is that protects your right to self-reliance and independence? Hmmmmmmmmm? When your home has been take through eminent domain because it's in the way of great revenues to the government... remember who brought it to you, okay. When your daughter is stalked by an illegal alien child molester remember who ignored the problem will you?? When your airport is threatened by a suitcase nuke, remember who left the gate open, okay?? Just remember these things and ask yourself, was it worth abandoning YOUR RIGHTS ... in exchange.... for the Presidents. Tell me... how do you get your rights back with an activist judicial system bent on giving power to a government who can define willy nilly how to apply the law and whether you have your explicits rights defined by the founders or not?

I think too many people on here are speaking about a rift in the Republican Party that doesn't exist in a lot of places including my State of Oklahoma.
After reading this thread and reading her speech from 1993, she should never have been nominated IMHO. I would have preferred to see her in the Judicial hearings but I think she realized that she could not get through them. Her religious background is not at issue here IMHO and shouldn't be brought into the discussion.
Some folks on here should quit listening to the 3rd party types that want to split the party. Fortunately they are not out here in the grassroots and are not representative of what I see in my state.
When the next nominee goes forward and is conservative, we will find out who the disruptors are and who were sincere in their belief that she was not the best candidate for the SCOTUS. In fact, I don't see how anyone could say she was the best candidate, but then I haven't figured out why we need a woman to fill that position since O'Connor used to be the only woman on the SCOTUS until Gingsberg. I want the best person for SCOTUS.
I respectively disagree. We cannot allow the rats and rinos to dictate who sits on the Supreme Court. If this battle isn't fought now, it will never be fought. Far too long we have acquiesed to the rats and rinos and what has it gotten us? A 90+ confirmation vote on Ginsberg. I'm sick of our civility. Fight now or destroy the future of Republican party over this. There is no other option. If Bush betrays us again, and seeks Reid's pre-approval over OURS, he will pay the politcal price again.
And not only that, it will end the Republican party. There is no point to being a Republican if our president cannot appoint a conservative justice to the Supreme Court.
None of us care if the Senate has to be shut down for an entire year over this. They'll vote the nominee in as soon as a BUDGET has to be passed. If that takes a month, a year, or never, I don't care.
Bush needs to keep his promise to us and stop playing games. I'm sick of the ninnies and the twits dictating policy. Fight or give birth to a third party that will respect it's conservative base. Many of us have had enough and I promise you it has nothing to do with being a Christian.
I agree with you....and I heard someone on a talk show say that, more than judges...the Republicans need to start electing more conservative SENATORS...
I totally agree...the POTUS, and the SCOTUS can only do so much...the peoples power resides in the Congress...and we have been doing a pretty poor job in some cases of electing congresscritters...
The amnesia regarding the Roberts selection is astounding.
But obviously the course for Bush is simple: do the right thing, nominate someone good, and fight for what's right, and let the chips fall where they may. If the Democrats want to go extremist-wacko on some nominee, they'll be the ones paying the price with the public. If Bush caves to appease the Democrats he and the Republicans will pay the price.
I do too - another Souter will not do.

I watched both, and the others did not divide the party like this one, and they were not even close to the damage done this time.
If you are going to claim conservative criticism of Miers gives fodder to the left, it is fair to claim ludicrous comments like the one you made above does likewise.
Because as conservatives, we're among family. Also, just because someone on the left makes a charge against the president, that doesn't automatically make it false. Cronyism has been charged by the left and to a large extent, the right has began to see merit in these charges.
You make a good point about that not everyone here is truly "conservative". There are of course varying degrees of conservatives and in different areas. It is also up for debate on what being "conservative" really means.
A Goldwater conservative has little in common with a Bush compassionate conservative.
To get to the point, Bush would receive a lot less criticism if he started governing more like a conventional conservative and stopped trying to suck up to the democrats. It was very disappointing when Bush was willing to go to war against conservatives but it totally unwilling to engage the Democrats.
We frankly need more Dr. Tom Coburn's in the Senate. I was so happy to see Sen Allen stick with Dr. Coburn on the pork bills. It is a start!

Even though there are still some major problems, e.g. ameliorating the horrific child welfare system instituted when that country was under the Iron Curtain, defrocking errant priests who were able to insinuate themselves into the Church during the Cold War due to the exigencies created by living under a totalitarian regime, an economy that still suffers from the burden placed upon it by nearly half a century of failed Marxist dogma...
It still is a pretty amazing country, even while it's grappling with all of these challenges.
You can say that again -- looking back I felt about the Souter nomination when I first heard like I did Miers now that I think about it -- that's not good. I liked Roberts right away.
