Look at what you just said. President Bush is vindictive and cares more about his own ego and winning, than principle and the good of the country. If that's true, it speaks little for his character and surely such a person has been undeserving of conservative support all these years.

This is very tiresome, and it is obviously untrue. I supported Roberts, and so did most of the people who opposed Miers. Opposition to Roberts by Freepers was mild, and limited. Forty-five percent of the Freepers in this forum said they opposed her in the latest poll, and the number was growing steadily. If the poll had been set a week later, it probably would have been over fifty percent.
Moreover, most of the people who opposed Miers voted for Bush and supported him for the past five years. Nothing that Bush has done in the past five years upset so many of his supporters as the Miers nomination. Thank God he has recognized his mistake.
I have never said that I hated Miers. I have said that I opposed the Miers NOMINATION to the Supreme Court. There is a very big difference. Since she has been good enough to withdraw her candidacy, I sincerely wish her well and am only sorry she was put through such an unpleasant experience. It should never have happened, and I don't fault her for it.
Those opposed to the Miers nomination have routinely been scolded here for "not trusting Bush." What does it say about that trust if we're now supposed to worry about Gonzales being nominated? Wouldn't that imply that the trust given by the pro-Miers side was misplaced, if Bush would, out of vindictiveness, now nominate Gonzales?

Yesterday, I decided the "Antis" were right, substantively. However, the ones who were mean-spirited and took cheap shots have lost my support and friendship forever. Many here, and Ann Coulter, are on that list. They can pound sand.
Has anyone looked at what the 2006 Senate picture looks like? I know we have a chance to pick up a seat in Maryland, but it looks like we're going to lose in PA (Santorum). I haven't watched other races.
We fear the chances are strong for Alberto. Sure it will further enrage the base. But no one, no matter how much they disagree with his positions on certain issues, or his past affiliations, will be able to question his credentials.

I agree with you that it's better to avoid a bloodbath, but in the case of JRB, the rats made a deal to not to filibuster her. If they tried, it would've been the GOP's golden opportunity to turn the table on the Democrats for reneging on their deal. Win-win scenario... IF the GOP can play politics, which we know they can't.
They would not ALL be DOA. One, maybe even two of them might not make it, but we only need ONE for the court. The dems would be severely damaged in the ensuing fight, and we would have a marvelous opportunity to educate the populous on the virtues of conservatism.

Conservatism has been gaining members for 40 years. It was inevitable that pressure would force cracks in the mass to show up. Nothing is ever static. I just hope that we will not lose too much momentum.
