COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Oct. 3 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Focus on the Family Action Chairman James C. Dobson, Ph.D., issued the following statement today regarding President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the United States Supreme Court:
"We welcome the president's nomination of Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court. He pledged emphatically during his campaign to appoint judges who will interpret the law rather than create it. He also promised to select competent judges who will 'not use the bench to write social policy.'(1) To this point, President Bush's appointments to the federal bench appear to have been remarkably consistent with that stated philosophy. Based on the information known generally about Harriet Miers, and President Bush's personal knowledge of her, we believe that she will not prove to be a lone exception.
"On the other hand, one cannot know absolutely about matters of integrity and philosophy until a jurist is given the tremendous power and influence of their position. As Lord Acton said: 'Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.' Sadly, that seems to have happened to Justices Souter and Kennedy. All we can say now is that Harriet Miers appears to be an outstanding nominee for the Supreme Court.
"We look forward to learning more about her at the confirmation hearings."

Give me a break. Do really think Miers spent 25 years as one of Bush's most loyal supporters will turn around and totally betray him. Would you expect her counterpart in the Clinton Whitehouse, say Bob Bennett, to do the same? Miers is known for her loyalty. She might be a hack, but she aint a liberal. You are suffering from Souter paranoia.
Dobson was on with Brit Hume tonight and admitted that he has never met Harriet Miers. Neither have I.
Apparently Dobson is only honorable if he agrees with a certain point of view.
I'm not sure about that. (I have a bias in favor of genuine Christians, even when they are overly partisan, or otherwise wrong-headed.. :-)
and what is your evidence to the contrary?
You do know that people can "grow" conservative also.
It would be a step, she would also have to change her views regarding gays, and prayer in schools, not to mention vouchers, and also a few other positions.
In other words, Dobson would back Hillary.....if she was conservative and had the same political views he does....i.e. she wasn't Hillary but someone else.
The so called "true conservatives" are nothing but a bunch of third party whiners who are still mad that the Republican Party wouldn't elect Pat Buchanan.
What makes this statement interesting is that Dobson has been very emphatic in the past about GOP leaders toeing the line on social issues. I heard him interviewed a couple of years ago on the radio, and he was adamant that the GOP wouldn't be able to count on his support if they adopted a "big tent" party platform.
We'll see. Bush has known Miers for years, and in a variety of capacities in which he and she would have exchanged candid views on a wide variety of subjects. I think Bush knows exactly what he is getting, even if the rest of us don't.
What about that sleeze Dick Morris, didn't he have a long relationhip with Bill? (although I do not believe Miers is cut from the same cloth as that scumbag).
Yes, i do know that; i did.
Still, it may be a area where some questions are in order.
I dunno. Seems more like coagulating rather than coalescing. I mean as in trying to stop the bleeding.
Makes me feel a little better. I just feel uncomfortbale because I know nothing of this babe. If Dr. Dobson likes her, that is a point for her in my book. I am still looking into this (like I have any say-so). I dont think I have disagreed with Dr. Dobson on any major issue that I know of.
her personal views are consistent with that of evangelical Christians You can tell a lot about her from her decade of service in a conservative church.
Hecht says about Miers judicial philosophy: Shes an orginalist thats the way she takes the Bible,
That, plus I trust people like President Bush, Vice-President Cheney, Leonard Leo, Jay Sekulow, and James Dobson. Bush promised us strict constitutionalists as judges, he has delivered them thus far, and I have no reason to believe that he'll go back on his promise.
Thank you.
I'll probably always consider Dr. Dobson a good Christian, rather than a bad one. :-)
Oh, and she said she would definitely help overturn Roe v. Wade? Is this on record?
Dobson sounds a bit underwhelmed with Miers.
I'm looking into my "crystal ball," so to speak. I think that perhaps some of these very critical people will be singing another tune in a few years. (Someone today posted her picture with Helen Thomas, a pretty low blow, IMO-- especially so early on.) However, I can't vouch for the accuracy of my crystal ball.
Ahhh. A refreshing voice of reality. As is your norm.
