The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department. The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State. After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.
I assume at this point Boren is trying to spin the story so as not to create hysteria at the university itself. Unfortunately, his flip-flopping is creating more controversy than if he was just upfront and said something like "we aren't sure".
If he (suicide bomber) had a link with Islam, do you think the public will be told about it?
ROfL....as well they should be.
Just heard a brief report on the OU bombing in the sports news on our local Fox station here in Phoenix. They didn't say much except that one person died and the incident is under investigation. Well at least there isn't a complete news blackout.
He should have said "we are not sure and will provide more details when they are availble." That would have been the smart thing to do IMHO. This spin about the kid being depressed that is being disputed by his fraternity is not selling.
PhiKap,
I have to disagree. The kid most probably was depressed deep down. Otherwise, why would he have lost it the way he did? One of the other students reported today that he was an angry sort. So if he was angry and down about life, he was susceptible to influence. Wasn't he living in the same apt. complex as the Muslims? It has been reported also by another student that this boy was into weapons. I think Boren is simply reporting a part of the story that makes sense to parents. But we await the rest of the story. Good night. I'll check in tomorrow.
The kids will get back to school tomorrow and we'll have more information than the FBI.
We have a lot of people here that are not too happy with the Administration from time to time -- someone leaked that info to that one website that is in the know and bet you can take that to the bank. He moved from the fraternity house which has just been remodeled to crummy apartments a block from the Islamic Center. Those are the worst of the campus apartment complexes by far.
Knowing our local city and county officials, I would bet we will hear something.
I've been mostly lurking, trying to keep up on TM posts, pinging Cindy when I come across something interesting. New job, family matters and a new addition to our home keeping me pretty busy these days.
Has a livejournal, myspace or xanga been found on this kid?
"So if he was angry and down about life, he was susceptible to influence."
Susceptible to influence is a key phrase I think we should remember in all of this... IMHO it would make more sense for terrorists to begin using sympathetic/depressed Americans rather than taking themselves out. Much easier to use someone than replace a trusted terrorist soldier. This would also be inline with the last video threat that used an American to deliver their message.
RANDOM THOUGHT #135 - No comment necessary (LOL):
If he was sitting on a bench perhaps he was waiting to meet someone? This would go along with the "being used" theory...
Deeply depressed people usually do not have the capacity to coordinate something that is complex. They can jump, lynch themselves, eat pills, park a running vehicle in an enclosed area, or use a firearm. The cutters usually take a try or two. Bombs normally must be proven effective. This incident does not meet the smell test.
WOW, PhiKapMom. I have expressed this sentiment before and I'll say it again: your info and sources are just great. You're worth your weight in gold.
I think the kid was taken in by someone myself. The Boren depression story is not selling here to the media. Most people I have seen interviewed seem to believe there is more involved from what I have gotten from the interviews.
I don't think rationale people blow themselves up or murder someone else.
All I know is that I have a feeling this is something more than a lone person commiting suicide. He was making a statement IMHO and I don't like the implications.
Well, if he wanted a sensational way to exit he certainly found it. It is so different from anything one would expect from an American kid who decided to commit suicide.
There still is skepticism and speculation about the McVeigh bombing story, so there will probably be unanswered questions about this event.
Wonder if he was on facebook? That is the latest rage on campus.
At midday, press reports indicated that five people had been injured. If this has changed, I'm not aware of it.
Glad to know you are still around. What is so funny is that I was thinking about you and wondering about you just a couple of hours ago. You always did come up with some good stuff. Keep watch this week. And take care.
Oh and check you mail in a minute.
I have seen that five people injured report several times but when Boren speaks, he says no one else was hurt. I have no idea which is correct. Only news getting out seems to be released through the OU Daily tonight except for what reporters have said on the news. One reporter said all the reporters had been moved back from the scene earlier this evening -- that was live. The interview on Channel 9 with the fraternity President sure didn't help the Administrations spin about this kid.
