What's up in the town of Winthrop, Maine? SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH!
Winthrop proves smoking is not a health issue at all. But it's all about CON T R O L!
7-16-05 - I was notified of the ridiculous treatment given to one family just because a family member was smoking.
A cop approached the family and told them they would have to leave because this was a "no smoking beach." The family, as you can see, is not "on" the beach, but on the grassy area. There were no signs stating that the area was smoke free. The cop told them that there was a sign, but it was now "gone."
Who pays for the care of Winthrop Beach? The taxpayers? People in Maine who smoke are paying well above their fair share of taxes. Tax payers are also paying for this "cop," who evidently had nothing better to do then harass a family because one of the adults was smoking.
Rule #11: Trash, debris or cigarette butts must be placed in trash containers.
The only signs that were posted. If Winthrop wants a smoke free beach, they need to get their act together and POST said signs! NOW!

If you smoke, find another Maine beach to relax in. Winthrop likes to discriminate against smokers.
Maybe smokers feel the same way about your body odor. Off the beach, stinky.
I guess grills have to go too because they produce....SMOKE
I was just thinking the above. Agreed. Furthermore, I can never recall being burnt on the beach by a cigarette and during various periods of my life, I spent entire summers on the beach, when there were many more smokers and laws/rules against smoking were almost non-existent
If you notice in the above picture, there is NO ONE sitting by the family.
You mean I don't get the "pleasure" of stepping on some redneck low class junky's smoldering butt in my bare feet?? Oh the humanity!!
"You mean I don't get the "pleasure" of stepping on some redneck low class junky's smoldering butt in my bare feet?? Oh the humanity!!"
You are kidding, right?
In the great outdoors, at a breezy beach, smoking should not be allowed?
I think your overly sensitive nose should keep itself out of other people's business.
Last I heard, smoking was legal.
You remind me of the anti-smoking zealots in Minneapolis that had smoking banned in every bar and restaurant.
If you abhor smoking so much, stick to non-smoking establishments. There are more than enough of them to please anyone's tastes.
Stop trying to legislate other people's legal behavior. It's contrary to a free society and kind of paints you as a control freak.
So true, I was lucky enough to move to California when they started in with the smoker bashing brainwashing.. Wife and I learned that when we ate out, we ate, Paid, ran out, and did not spend another second in the place.
Now that I am in Nevada, it took us time to get used to sitting after a meal and having a smoke. Its very relaxing and I really missed it. Nothing better than a smoke and a cup of coffee after a nice dinner out.
We also go out to eat alot more than we used to in Kalifornistan :)
That's how I felt when I came home from the Navy from San Diego to Colorado. It's as if all states that have accomodations for smokers are somehow expected to be plagued with innocent bystanders keeling over in the streets and resturaunts. And we all know that THAT'S a bunch of BS.
Unfortunately, this BS mentality seems to have followed me east. That's fine. I have a good countermeasure against this -one of many.
Of all the beaches I've visited all around the world, the most I've seen litter-wise were:
((In order of frequency))
--beer cans/bottles (Partially buried)
--pet poo
--burnt wood
--condoms (used)
--socks
--toys (Legos -OW!)
--condoms (unused)
--cigarette butts
--plastic utensils
This includes the beaches in San Diego; Freemantle, Australia; Phuket, Thailand; Mombasa, Kenya; Singapore; Manilla, Phillipines; Hawaii and various rivers and lakes in Colorado.
It drove me wild when people began to complain about smoking outdoors. Now there are laws against it. It is insane.
Were you ever burnt by one of those cigarette butts while walking on any of the beaches you name?
I hear you.
Insanity rules in an insane wold.
Exactly. They aren't bothering anyone. Some control freak had to have turned them in.
What a shame. Everyone I know that lives in TN are wonderful, kind and gently people. I guess every state has the hard core jerks in them such as yourself. Pity.
"Redneck?" "Junky" Takes one to know one, I guess. Right Suzy?
Looks like a few of them crawled out from under their rocks tonight!
The smoking bans are pathetic and they are choking our nation's economy!
My favorite place to eat almost closed their doors after the first smoking ban in Maine in 2000.
The owner then invested in a very expensive liquor license and business started to boom again.
They then remodeled. The place is beautiful. 4 big ceiling air purifiers. Full menu. A beautiful glass enclosed non-smoking section. Sign on the entrance door "This is a smoking establishment. No one under 18 admitted without guardian."
It is a Sports Bar with the full computer golf game across the back wall; bunch of big TV's. Just beautiful.
But that still wasn't good enough for the state. A full no smoking ban went into effect a year ago January. I went once after the ban, was so miserable that I couldn't sit there like old times and enjoy the evening that I haven't put myself through that again.
And do you think the state will reimburse this business owner for spending his own money to be able to accommodate everyone? You can bet they will not.
I absolutely refuse to eat out in a no smoking establishment. Why should I spend my money for that personal abuse? No way!
And I miss it dearly.
SheLion,
I agree. Get a life rock dwellers!
i am a 45 year old female who would truly love to break my addiction to ciggies.
My hubbiy did it cold turkey nine years ago. Says I can do the same. Not without killing him in the process!
Peri-menopause and smoking cessation are a lethal mix!
;-)
I too object to smokers leaving their butts behind but a "field-stripping" campaign would be more likely accepted.
After all as smokers and drinkers we're carrying your sanctimonius twit's asses by providing a target for tax increases that hardly any one objects to because they wish they didn't smoke or drink too.
And yes I know you're a long timer - but I'm not married to my screen name so ZOT me! ;-)
If these "sin" taxes have a basis shouldn't we add SUV gas taxes? Ice cream taxes? Posting on FR taxes? Lying on the beach bitching taxes? Ease off ... I feel better already ... ;-)
