Blue states buzz over secession
Washington Times ^ | 11/09/04 | Joseph Curl

Secession, which didn't work very well when it was tried once before, is suddenly red hot in the blue states. In certain precincts, anyway.
One popular map circulating on the Internet shows the 19 blue states won by Sen. John Kerry — Washington, Oregon, California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Maryland and the Northeastern states — conjoined with Canada to form the "United States of Canada." The 31 red states carried by Mr. Bush are depicted as a separate nation dubbed "Jesusland." The idea isn't just a joke; one top Democrat says, "The segment of the country that pays for the federal government is now being governed by the people who don't pay for the federal government."
"Some would say, 'Oh, poor Alabama. It's cut off from the wealth infusion that it gets from New York and California,' " said Lawrence O'Donnell, a veteran Democratic insider and now senior political analyst at MSNBC. "But the more this political condition goes on at the presidential level of the red and blue states, the more you're testing the inclination of the blue states to say, 'So what?' "
Mr. O'Donnell raised the subject of secession on "The McLaughlin Group" during the weekend. "Ninety percent of the red states are welfare-client states of the federal government," said Mr. O'Donnell, who was an aide to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Thanks for that happy vision. I'm hoping they get a really bad spanking in 2006.

The central Wisconsin county I grew up in went red this time, but blue last time. Knowing the area, I couldn't believe a single person there voted for Gore, but...

Alright so let me get this right...

(a) The democrats are the party of the people. They're looking out for the little guy and making sure that he gets a fair share

(b) Republicans are the arty of the rich, the religous right, that intolerant shrubs that only care about money

Now, the Democrats want to say that the Blue states are tired of supporting the Red States and he's just going to take his ball and leave the game.

But wait, the Republicans have all the money. They are the business elites, the controlling, evil corporations. So the "Blue States" secede, the "Evil Corporations and Rich People" move into the Red states and the new United States of Canada is now made up of even more freeloaders who would rather beg for a hand out, than work for a hand up...I'm LMAO right now.

So basically, Larry OD is pissed off because the rest of the world sees him as the idiot that he is, so he throws all of the poor, working class people under the bus - telling them to get off his dime. DEMs will never win another election...thanks Liar Larry

The idiots pushing this lamebrained idea fail to consider that in the Bluest state in this election (MA) Kerry only won 60-40.

That means 40% of Mass (including myself) voted for Bush. How many of those 60% would actually consider seceeding - 15%?

NEVER going to happen.

Who was the New Jersey congressman who brought this up?

Can't remember his name.

He ought to be ashamed of himself, though.

Fine, let's go back to states rights then. If we used a national sales tax maybe?

Or

Let them secede, and then we invade and take back our land.

Didn't John Kerry quote Lincoln at the convention?

These people are such fools.

They can leave. I'm done with 'em.

>>Mr. O'Donnell, who was an aide to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan.<<

I wonder how much aide he really offered... shoe shining? What an off-the-wall nut-case he has become. He is incensed... I love it!

Yeah... can you imagine how the Folks in Alabama feel about his comments?

Stuck in a blue state, we'd fight secession, but cause trouble in the process.

These people should get smoked in 2006.

Basically, the blue states are taxed to pay out subsidies (farm welfare, roads which cannot be supported by local population density) to the red states.

In addition to It's Time To Part Company by Walter Williams, read The South As It's Own Nation a demographic comparison.

I know rent in SF went through the roof during the Dot.Com blitz -- if anyone could find a place to rent at all; then read they were in decline due to the dropping demand after the bust.

But if rent is so high why, with low interest rates, haven't more people been able to purchase in SF compared to the rest of the country.

As to Richmond and Oakland -- what can anyone say about that? How is Jerry Brown doing as Mayor of Oakland?

And if the country falls apart, there's no telling how much we'd lose both materially and in terms of ideas.

I think this country lost most of its ideals a long time ago. If we are no longer required to compromise our principles with Democrats then maybe we can restore the constitution.

Without Democrats this country will prosper like it never has before.
