This is the saddest quote I may have ever read (election-related):

Posted on 11/03/2004 7:43:08 AM PST by AuburnJenn

"It's definitely the war," said Eliana Deutsch, 20, of San Diego, explaining why she came out. "People see these soldiers who are 18 and don't have an education, and they're over there dying. It's really sad that that (the military) is their best option."

This makes me irate. What a spoiled brat. Most of our service men are highly educated (ever heard of West Point?) I had several close friends in college who CHOSE to join the military. I think it is an intelligent, BRAVE choice to join the service. I am just lost for words right now. What nerve....and she is not much younger than me. Sickening.

Slightly disagree. Although only officers are required to have bachelor's degrees, most senior enlisted do as well. It's very common for junior enlisted to re-enlist for education bonuses.

"Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but you MUST have a high school degree before joining the Military these days."

No. As long as you can pass the ASVAB (military aptitude test), you're in. While in, the military will educate you (e.g., GED, associates, bachelors, masters, Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M., D.D.S...).

Yes. My son is planning on enlisting in the Marines in just a few short years (2), and that is what I was told.

People join the volunteer military for a lot of different reasons, when they leave the military, they are wiser, richer (in more ways than just money) and they are owed a debt by the rest of the country. No one should decry the people in the military, they are heros, and they are ours.

It's because people like her honestly believe that people like us have some kind of brain damage.

She sounds so enlightened! To her Duty, Honor, and Country is some kind of genetic malfunction.

How does one get from U of T (Austin?) to the military? Is that legal?

Thank you for your service.

It’s not just the officers that are educated. Basically your not getting in without a high school diploma. By the time an enlisted person has been in 10 years most in the Air Force have at least an associates and I suspect the other services aren‘t far behind. I don’t have the stats handy but there is also a large number with bachelors, masters and even doctorates. Just more confirmation of the lefts bias.

Generally correct.

You must have either a high school diploma or a GED certificate. However, you can still get in and go to basic without one of these, but by the time you go into service one must be obtained.

Most of the enlisted military have a HS/Ged upon enlistment. The majority of them expound on that and practically all of your career NCO's have higher educations.

Dude, that is close to the SAT score that got me to Annapolis. Ever thought of entering a commissioning program?

The US military as a group is better educated and has a higher family income than the US population in general. It's a myth that a draft could improve the quality of the US military, a draft would degrade it.

The AH64D Apache helicopter unit cost works out to about $56.25 million, a little more responsibility than most employers would entrust to the typical HS dropout slacker with his nose ring.

I had a 1300 SAT score and was applying for Officer Training School when they informed me that my bachelor's degree was not sufficient to qualify me for the program. It takes a healthy dollop of ignorance to smear our military as uneducated.

Yep, or you must take and pass the equivalence test.

I don't know about you but every time I see US soldiers on camera it gives you goose bumps at how well our troops are representing our country. It makes you proud. The US Soldiers are truly our best and brightest.

Doing freedom's work is hard.

I also encourage you to pursue education. I had a 1290 (missed 2 on the math, did terrible on the verbal) and I just graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy (the little-known 5th service academy) with honors in engineering. I got a free education and I love it! Thanks Uncle Sam, sorry this girl doesn't appreciate what you do for us.

But look at where she's from, she can't help it :)

hey, we're not all like that down here! San diego is military country. She's just one of those San Fran college imports. I want Calif. EV to split, or else just split Calif. Without L.A. and San Fran, Calif would be Red. I WANT TO LIVE IN A RED STATE!

What a totally asinine thing to say. I served in the military and lots of soldiers had education beyond high school. There is also a lot of training you get being in the military. You also get the experience of learning to work with others, serving the communities, mentoring children, and showing courage, determination, and standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

Yes.

Also, many, many people join the military to take advantage of the generous educational benefits they offer. It's not unusual for someone to enlist in, say, the Army for four years, go to college on the GI Bill, join ROTC, then begin their military career as newly minted (and newly-degreed) junior officers.

You can't get a commission without a degree anymore, and the military is one of the very best ways for those coming from depressed backgrounds to really get a good education, both in and out of the classroom.

Sounds like this chick doesn't know the first thing about the military, which is not surprising given that she's a lib.
