I voted on the west side in Woodlawn. At 6:58 a.m., 2 minutes before opening, there were about 100 people ahead of me. In 18 years of voting at this location, I have never witnessed this kind of a turnout. I agree that privacy with these diebold machines is a bit of a problem. No intimidation noticed, just a collective frustration by people on their way to work that were hampered by the long lines and changes from paper ballots to the electronic ones.
When my first volunteer came to relieve me, I went in to vote and started talking to a woman who I could tell (can't you always tell?) was liberal, and got into a discussion. She was saying that she votes all the time because women have only had the right ot vote since.. I then gave the story about how Afghanistan women went through the Muslim ritual before going to vote in case they were killed and wasn't that wonderful. You should have seen the look on her face and she mumbled something about the humanitarian aspects. Then she started into eliminating the electoral college, and I said the US was not a democracy but a democratic republic and it was set up that way by our founders for a purpose, etc. Then, before any other debate, I had to vote (straight Republican by the way), and knowing I cancelled her vote made me feel good.
The good news is that my helper at the polls was a conservative, pro-life 17 year-old who gave me faith in America again.
God Bless this country. I was so proud to be an American on this beautiful sunny fall day exercising the democratic process in action.
And a "thank you" to our vets and troops today, for making it still possible.

Wife and I went early to cast our two votes for Dubya. May God bless him today.
We also voted for Congressman Virgil Goode over Al Weed.. The papers are going to look funny tomorrow with the headlines "Bush in a Landslide", and "Goode Smokes Weed"

Me: Both parties had representatives along the sidewalk handing out literature and talking with voters. An older gentlemen on the GOP side got crowded off the grass by his colleagues and as he was trying to find space, this old liberal hag started yelling at him to get off the sidewalk (apparently it was against the rules). He only had half of both feet on the concrete. Otherwise, there were about twice as many people as normal in line to vote at this Republican leaning precinct.
My colleague: he voted nearby. When a Rat party member approached him with literature, he tore it up in his face and said "Sorry, I don't vote for traitors". Apparently someone from our side saw this go down and when my friend exited the polling site, the pubbie patted him on the back and thanked him for his vote. They had a good chuckle over the whole thing.
Let me know what happens. I think we could use a Maryland thread as well.
I voted for Bush, it's like Leonidas at the bridge here in NYC, but sKerry is not getting NY without a fight!
just got back from voting.
i live in a fairly conservative precinct, quite small and out in the country --
in the last 6 years i've lived here i've never had to wait in line to vote, just walk up and vote --
not so today. 45 minute line, never seen anything like it. and i went at what was supposed to be an off-peak time in the middle of the morning.
i have no idea if that is good or bad for Bush but people certainly are out voting like nothing i've seen before.
Anyone know when the exit polls are going to be released?
I voted at 7:00 in Anne Arundel County, there was a long line but I had no problems there.

I sure do. I just came back from voting. Overcast, chilly. There was a steady stream of voters and all went very smoothly except for the poor old soul in fromt of me in the line where they check your registration and have you sign in. She couldn't provide ID with her name and address on it and they didn't have her on the voter rolls. I think she was just in the wrong place. She was not a fraudulent voter. Just confused. Now we just sit back and wait.
I voted in the morning rush here in Sunrise, Florida. About a 40 minute wait; voting went well. Natch, we're in a rotten borough, Broward County. However, as long as we have good turnout here, we'll keep Kerry's margin down in this county and win the day.
