Cheney just copped out by thanking JE for saying nice things about his family, when he should have accused him of bringing up the issue "to divide the country", which is what Edwards accuses him of.
"when he should have..." He was following good rhetorical practice. Edwards already solidly put his foot in it. Cheney did as little as possible to obscure the fact.

Y'all-- what did Vice President Cheney mean when he thanked Silky for praising Cheney's family? I know Silky's 'your welcome' was a bunch a smarmy CRAP, but was the VP taken off guard by Silky's bringing up his lesbian daughter? What was up?

Cheny also claims not to be familiar with Edward's cases in court, so he can't slam him as a trial lawyer.
Trick question to get Cheney to criticize Edwards personally. He didn't bite.
