He represents his people. What we call gaffes are actually effective applause lines among his people. The "guns, God, and gays" line received raucous applause on hardball, yet the pundits refer to it as a mistake. Only because we have some sense about us.

My biggest concern with Dean is that he will continue going off the deep end with all these splinter groups to stir up the lowest common denominator, and after he gets the nomination, he will play himself off as being middle of the road bordering on conservative for the big gigs, assuming (probably rightly so) that the majority of folks haven't followed the campaign all that closely before the primary. I hope I'm wrong, but there is nothing I fear as much as the voting capacity of stupid people in large numbers under the influence of the evil leaders that depend on their "service."

I think 75% could be high --- however there are different definitions of middle class and it might depend on which is used. I think Limbaugh said about 33% were poor and the rest are middle and upper middle class. Also I think even though many have climbed into the middle class, high single-motherhood makes it a more fragile middle class.

Well, I tried to look it up, but most of the census stuff is pdf, which is a hassle. The guy who posted the 75% number is boycotting me.

Yes ---- I don't think Republicans are wise to get too over-confident and think a lot of the Clinton and Gore/Nader voters have switched over. And they might think they have the votes of the Mexicans locked up if they give amnesty --- but I think that's not a sure thing and in fact would help the democrats. It didn't help the over-all hispanic vote turn go to the Republicans after the first blanket amnesty --- Reagan got more a percentage of the hispanic vote than any Republican since.

Hmm, let's see. I'm a white Southerner, with no racial annimous towards anybody, but I oppose quotas and reparations. I wonder what Dean is talking about, as those things mentioned above are legitimate positions on the issues? What is he going to change? For that matter, and including several other gross misstatements over the past 30-45 days, WHAT IN THE H--- IS HE TALKING ABOUT???

I did find that 80% and more are getting high school diplomas ---- which I'm sure is helping attain middle class status for all those who did. The illegitimacy rate I'm sure hurts some in attaining it --- I'm not sure what that rate is though. I think most working blacks and virtually all two-parent family blacks are making it into the middle class.

"Not because white people are worse than black people about race but because whites are in the majority, and therefore the behavior of whites has a much bigger influence on hiring practices and so forth and so on than the behavior of African-Americans." First Dean insults whites, and then he tries to compensate for it by insulting black people by implying their attitudes and actions can be dismissed as inconsequential to society.
What a condescending moron.
Remember when he was criticized for not having any black supporters, and so in a TV debate he tried to prove he was a "bro" by claiming some rap tune was his favorite song?
This guy is so patronizing it's pathetic.

Wow! I grew up in the south in the same time frame, but never saw even the most prejudiced of my family or neighbors so anything so rude. A lot of folks didn't like blacks and would say so, but they still treated them decently.

No, the key to race relations is stoping the black hate mongers. Slavery was horrific, but I didn't do it and will take no blame for it.

LOL! It was fortune, indeed, that led that albatross into the race. Mylord, he makes algore seem sane.

You forget that Dean is from New York City---he saw plenty of blacks. That's about the only thing I can say in his favor. He's still a schmuck!!But Dean grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a place not exactly known for its large number of black residents.
If he ever did see blacks, they were most likely servants. So perhaps his statement about "educating white people" is apropos for him. He has to constantly stop himself from ordering around the black people he sees on the campaign trail.

Median household income was unchanged for many population groups in 2000. Income was up for Black and Hispanic households, households in metropolitan areas, households with a female household or no husband present, and households in the Northeast region.
Overall, median household income in 2000 was $42,148. It did not show any statistically significant change from 1999 after adjusting for the 3.4% increase in inflation. Some population groups did however show significant growth. Black median household income was up 5.5% to a level of $30,439 and Hispanic income was up 5.3% to a level of $33,447.
