You forget that Dean is from New York City---he saw plenty of blacks. That's about the only thing I can say in his favor. He's still a schmuck!!But Dean grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a place not exactly known for its large number of black residents.
If he ever did see blacks, they were most likely servants. So perhaps his statement about "educating white people" is apropos for him. He has to constantly stop himself from ordering around the black people he sees on the campaign trail.

His parent's home was on Park Avenue, that isn't the Upper West Side. Park Ave. is East Side.
The upper West Side pre-1980's real estate boom was a mix of Cuban, Puerto Rican, Black, White etc. It was also largely a haven for artists, musicians and actors. It didn't start getting gentrified til about 1982 or so. Dean was long gone by then anyway.
