NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan (CNS) — As war, violence and extremism in countries around the world threaten the lives of countless men, women and children, religions must rise above differences and be examples of peace and harmony, Pope Francis said.
“It is time to realize that fundamentalism defiles and corrupts every creed; time for open and compassionate hearts,” the pope said Sept. 14 at the plenary session of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.
“We need religion in order to respond to the thirst for world peace and the thirst for the infinite that dwells in the heart of each man and woman,” he said.
On the second day of his visit to Kazakhstan, the pope addressed 80 religious leaders and hundreds of delegates participating in the interreligious meeting Sept. 14-15 in the Palace of Independence, a blue-glassed trapezoid-shaped building in the heart of the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan.
The congress, which is held every three years, was the initiative of Kazakhstan’s first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, as a way of promoting dialogue among religions, the congress’ website stated. It also aims to prevent “the use of religious feelings of people for the escalation of conflicts and hostilities.”
Arriving at the meeting, the pope took his place at a huge round table with the other leaders and was immediately greeted by Sheikh Ahmad el-Tayeb, grand imam of Al-Azhar in Egypt. Smiling, the pope affectionately embraced him.
The event began with a moment of silent prayer.
After the formal session, Pope Francis held private meetings with a dozen of the leaders, including the sheikh, but also with Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, head of external relations for the Russian Orthodox Church. The metropolitan took the place of Russian Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, who canceled his attendance at the congress.
Metropolitan Anthony told reporters................

I can handle the “self-righteousness” part the “extremism” part has the obvious political connotations.
It makes it look like the Pope is taking sides with the Left side.
I’m being more generous than others but that’s what I’ll say.
He says, self-righteously.
Anybody who actually takes the teachings of Christ to heart needs to run as fast and far as they can from this rectal aperture.
When is the Pope going to ban civilian ownership of “Assault Bibles” ???
I just do not understand what this Pope is trying to do to the Church...or why.
Perhaps, if I’ve lived as good a life as I like to believe I have, I’ll find out soon enough.
No, we need Christ (the Word) in us via the indwelling of the Holy Spirit ... in order to respond to the thirst for world peace and the thirst for the infinite that dwells in the heart of each man and woman.
NOTHING ELSE -- NO RELIGION, NO PERSON, NO THING --- WILL MEET OUR NEED, SAVE CHRIST! AMAZINGLY, POPE FRANCIS DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THIS !!
“Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD God of Sabaoth!”
Is this your opus then, Frankie?
This Pope sucks.
Works-based religions are all about self-righteousness.
Does this include islam? Or is it exempt as it is actually a cult?
That’s funny right there,
A FReeper insider joke!
:)
But then I thought of all the lovely people I know who are faithful Catholics and who have to put up with this person, who is suppose to be building them up, putting them down.
And I decided that saying a prayer for them might be better.
Fair! I would only note that I haven’t met a denomination exclusively led by perfect human beings.
Nor was that ever the case, right? 12 disciples, of which 1 betrayed Him and 10 others then fled like kittens, including the one he called the rock denying Him three times in one evening...
... and He knew all that beforehand and still chose those 12 — and see what happened after! So, I figure He knows what He’s doing despite the strange persons with jobs like pastor and priest, bishop, Pope, etc.
What, and leave the Buddhists to run the world?
But most Church leaders do their best to uplift the faithful not tear them down.
This man does not. And worse he seems to be doing it out of malice rather then simple error.
I find that terribly sad.
Especially for Catholics who are facing outright persecution for their faith.
