CHAPTER 1
1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
4 Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.
But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. 14 Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased.” 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.
17 Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." Indeed, occasionally photographs illustrate the text. So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.
A r t
Q u a l i t yOften, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.
The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I will treat synoptically. Now, onward!
T e x t
S e q u e n c i n gThe pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).
P a c i n g Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything; if I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest. Rather, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?
The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!. .
Art is merely the Toy Department of Bible study,
so I'm just having fun here—I hope you are, too!
Thank you for your understanding.Hebrews 11:6

Amazing amount of work. Thank you for your work of assiduously collecting these great Biblical remembrances. Very impressive.
Amazing amount of work. Thank you for your work of assiduously collecting these great Biblical remembrances. Very impressive.
Can’t wait. When we’re in heaven, we’ll all hear everyone’s stories. I’m looking forward to yours, Mary-Lou.
I think I may have shared it on the J-Thread a few years ago, but I may have to find an excuse to share it again.
Philosophically speaking, would the Great Fish that swallowed Jonah have to have fins and scales?
Would a Jewish Prophet being swallowed by one that didn’t be Kosher?
When I prepared this thread a couple of weeks ago, I was curious about the Hebrew word translated as "fish." Revisiting that here, it was dag, fish. If you're asking whether a whale is implicated, I don't know. Perhaps a Hebrew scholar can educate us.
But we have Jesus' commentary: “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." (Matthew 12:39, 16:4). He is using "sign" in the sense of "miracle," which assuredly both Jonah's "resurrection" from the fish, and Jesus' from the tomb, were.
Obviously, the issue of Jonah having air to breath required miraculous intervention; so it's not much of a leap to suppose the "fish" itself was similarly a most special provision, perhaps even one-of-a-kind.
* that pulpit!
* that preacher!
* that preaching!
* that propulsion!
That is, it segued into a free copy of one of my favorite movies, James Garner's Support Your Local Sheriff.
I was thinking more along the lines of a basking shark*, a whale shark or a very large predatory sea creature. (I'm not sure if any filter feeder shark has a large enough throat either) A megalodon shark could surely swallow a man whole, but they seem to have gone extinct over 3,000,000 years ago.
Anyway, sharks are treif, as although they have fins they lack scales.
The original question stands: could a treif animal swallow a Holy Prophet?
*Awkward segue
(not quite) My Shark Story.That's about all I got to say about that...A friend of mine, let's call him Chuck, who is somewhat crazy, tells this story. Knowing him I believe it!
One day, Chuck was out diving with friends off Davenport, about half way between Half Moon Bay, and Santa Cruz CA.
He was swimming along, minding his own business, trying out his new $80 flippers. A seal grabbed one of his flippers. Annoyed, he kicked his foot up to shake the seal loose. This flipped HIM up under what he describes as a boxcar with fins. His "seal" was a Great White Shark!
The shark didn't like the taste of rubber and spit out the fin. He boosted for the surface stuck his head up and said "HELP!" Head back down, look for shark. Head up: "SHARK!" At this point he sees everybody on the boat frantically running to and fro. He and the boat manage to get together.
Later he found out that some local fishermen were in the habit of cleaning their catch in that area.
Soooo, the shark came up beside the boat looking for a handout. Finding none it then swam off in his direction. His friends said it was as long as the boat, 12 feet.
OK, now fast forward a month and a half. Chuck is visiting friends in San Diego, They go out for a dive. There are Basking Sharks, a harmless filter feeder, in the area. So his friend who knows about the earlier dive says, "Hey, Chuck! Wanna swim with the sharks?"
Slow Learner Chuck says "Sure!"
Soon, he's in the water. He sticks his head up and can see the dorsal fin of a shark approaching him. Oh goody! Dunks his head and looks. The water is too murky. Head up. Fin still coming. Head down, too murky. Then...
Out of the gloom a mouth "big enough for me to stand up in in any direction" suddenly appears.
His friend says it was the funniest thing he ever saw. Chuck came straight up out of the water, walked 10 feet across the surface and sank back down...
I am well aware of the physical impossibilities implicit in Jonah's story. That is why it is an authentic certified-by-Jesus miracle. To me, the most likely explanation is that God created a suitable one-of-a-kind marine animal just for the occasion.
A Kosher one-of-a-kind special creation creature that lives in the sea, with fins and scales?
Would any Treif creature be able to feast on a Holy Prophet?
Whether it had fins and scales is, in my view, irrelevant; so also is any reference to Levitical dietary laws. What is relevant is that this creature was (a) provided at the exact location and time needed miraculously by God and (b) designed by God to serve Jonah’s physical needs.
It seems relevant to me. Daniel was not eaten by lions, who lack cloven hooves and don’t chew a cud. Other prophets died horribly, but I can’t recall one who was savaged by a Treif animal, unless you count humans as animals.
AWESOME!
BTW...that little church still exists in New Bedford.
Yes, the exterior looked real and not like a set. Were the interiors also shot there? The pulpit and the dead whalers’ memorial plaques? Loved the bowsprit cross!
