What Is Better, Catholic or Protestant? Francis: “Both of Them Together”

The Youth Pastoral Office of Magdeburg diocese, Germany, will organize an October 2020 “ecumenical pilgrimage” for young people to Rome.

The motto of the journey is “With Luther to the Pope”. A similar trip was already taken in 2016.

The pilgrimage is co-organized by the regional Protestant State church, although the Protestants repudiate pilgrimages.

On the trip's webpage Mit-Luther-zum-Papst.de, the tour operator, Hans Höffmann, remembers what Pope Francis said to the participants of the 2016 pilgrimage when asked by a youngster: "What is better, Catholic or Protestant? Francis answered in German: "Both of them together!”

Martin Luther attended school in Magdeburg as a boy. As a preacher, he led the city to defect from the Church. Magdeburg became the first major city to publish Luther’s writings.

There are many differences between Protestants and Catholics...but at the heart of it, is a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Perhaps you might tune out the Catholic bashers and listen to Catholic radio or ask questions of a Priest. Education does a lot to eliminate prejudices and there is no question that there is prejudice against Catholics from Protestants.

It would be wonderful if all were on the same page.

However, Roman Catholicism has departed from the Scriptures. Why encourage someone to join a denomination that teaches and/or allows things such as the Brown Scapular and its false promise?

Why encourage someone to join a denomination that says one has to go through Mary first to get to Jesus?

All are contradictions of the New Testament.

I have educated myself on Roman Catholicism through independent study and interactions with Roman Catholics on these forums.

Below is the concluding sentence in what is called Unam Sanctam. It was issued by Pope Boniface VIII in 1302.

https://www.papalencyclicals.net/bon08/b8unam.htm

Roman Catholics have to believe this.

They have no choice in the matter.

Some will try to say it doesn't mean what it says.

Furthermore, we declare, we proclaim, we define that it is absolutely necessary for salvation that every human creature be subject to the Roman Pontiff.

This is but one of the examples of how Roman Catholicism contradicts the New Testament.

Awww, Mrs Don-o, thank you for your kind words.

I'm actually in awe (sp) of the Church. Catholics have done more good for the cause of Christ than all the Protestant faiths combined. This became clear to me, especially in the past 4 years. I tend to get wordy so I won't go into detail about my own epiphany regarding your faith but I really feel that I've been lied to (most likely out of ignorance) by my faith.

Anyway, I will continue to seek 'His' Truth and learning more about Catholicism.

Thanks again Julianne.

There is a Greek Orthodox church in my town. I am actually considering switching to there instead of the Catholic parish I have belonged to for seventeen years.

I've not heard that one time. This is what I believe: The Lord looks upon the heart and it is He that is the ultimate judge.

I'm not looking to argue with you but as I said in my initial post there are lies and myths, perpetuated by Protestants, regarding Catholicism. One of those myths is (and it's always stated as a blanket statement)that Catholics are going to hell for their worship of Mary and idol worship etc etc. But they are not worshiping her above Christ. They do revere her but not above Jesus.

I will never stand silent again when I hear a Protestant degrading the Catholic faith. It's not right.

Is it because of Francis and his many heresies?

A bad Pope doesn’t make the entire Catholic Church bad.

It doesn’t make you bad.

It doesn’t make me bad.

United yourself to Jesus Christ.

Dear ealgeone, we discussed the Brown Scapular before and you may want to go back and read what I wrote to you and metmom.

I explained that it's a sacramental (a blessed, symbolic object) like a wedding ring (which is also classified, in the Catholic faith, as a sacramental.) You scoffed at that but did not comment further.

But if you, or Mrs. Ealgeone, wear a wedding ring, think of what it means and what it doesn't mean. Its intent is to publicly manifest your wedded state, your belonging to your spouse. Most people have wedding rings in our culture, but they are not Biblical. They are neither New Testament nor anti-New Testament. They are meaningful to many, but a ring (or rings) will never be considered essential for a marriage.

Sacramentals can only be thought to contradict the New Testament if they are misconstrued or misrepresented.

Now, thinking of our love for Mary: maybe we would all hope to be "beloved disciples" of Christ. I would think a beloved disciple of Jesus would love His mother, even adopt her as his own.

Seeing His mother Many and His discople John at the foot of His cross, didn't Jesus say to Mary ---with great love and with one of His painful, dying breaths --- "Mother, behold your son"? And to John, "Behold your mother"?

Per some Roman Catholic writers, though not supported by the New Testament, one must accept Mary before one can accept Christ

"Roman Catholic writers" don't define dogma for the Church, though, do they?

I explained that it's a sacramental (a blessed, symbolic object) like a wedding ring (which is also classified, in the Catholic faith, as a sacramental.) You scoffed at that but did not comment further.

However, as I explained to you that is not what the apparition said.

The comparison of the wedding ring fails for this reason.

The apparition made a specific promise that the one wearing it would avoid the eternal fire.

In the year 1251, in the town of Aylesford in England, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite. She handed him a brown woolen scapular and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” In time, the Church extended this magnificent privilege to all the laity who are willing to be invested in the Brown Scapular of the Carmelites and who perpetually wear it.https://www.sistersofcarmel.com/brown-scapular-information.php

For this idol to "work" the person has to do the following:

The Blessed Virgin assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled:

1.Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.

2.Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).

3.Recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin OR Observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays OR With permission of a priest, say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary OR With permission of a priest, substitute some other good work.

*********************

It was a specific promise to avoid Hell. Some of your fellow RCs wear these out of fear of going to Hell.

Roman Catholics try to push these kind of comparisons in order to justify their idolatry in these matters.

There is no way this can be justified when compared to Scripture.

Yes they do....unless you're willing to admit what they say is incorrect.

That's what happens when you equate "tradition" to Scripture.

I've not heard that one time.

That is but one proclamation of the Roman Catholic church.

What I have posted is true of what Rome teaches. You have the link to verify it for yourself.

You mention the worship of Mary.

I encourage you to read the post I just made to mrs. d about what an apparition claiming to be Mary said what one has to do to avoid the eternal fire (Hell).

I will never stand silent again when I hear a Protestant degrading the Catholic faith.

I take the New Testament position on these matters. I compare Roman Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, whoever, to what is in the NT.

Paul did not hesitate to call out false doctrine.

As followers of Christ we are to call out ALL false doctrine.

I wish you well in your quest.

You mean like this??

******************

Thus as no man goeth to the Father but by the Son, so no man goeth to Christ but by His Mother.

***************

Somehow this was left out of the New Testament.

Nowhere in Scripture is there “sola scriptura”.

“They have left Roman Catholicism for Christianity.” Not this former Evangelical. At the age of 58 after going from one evangelical “church” to another for 40 years I read everything I could get my hands on about the history of Christianity. Christ started one church and it was the Catholic Church. Anyone that that knows how to read and has an open mind if they study the history of the church it’s Catholic. Just as plain as the nose on your face. “Moral principles do not depend on a majority vote. Wrong is wrong, even if everybody is wrong. Right is right, even if nobody is right.” ― Fulton J. Sheen
