Featured Term (selected at random):
The specified penance, corresponding to the nature and gravity of the sin, prescribed by confessors in the sacrament of penance. These penances were listed in penitential books. Celtic in origin, the earliest canonical lists are ascribed to St. Patrick and date from the fifth century. In time the practice spread throughout Europe. The best known penitential book is that ascribed to Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury (602-90).
Interesting fact.
Does anyone have knowledge if this reference book is still used?
I’ve never heard any priest mention using a book as a guide for what penance to assign. I can ask my pastor next time I see him!
I’ve never heard of any reference to this book either. Will ask my pastor or the priest doing the mission about it.
Catholic Word of the Day links will be provided later by another FReeper.

Catholic Word of the Day Ping!
Please send me a FReepmail if you would like to be on the Catholic Word of the Day Ping List.
To, the concept seems to contradict the premise of auricular confession. If the priest is just going to follow a book, instead of considering the circumstances of the sin and the disposition of the penitent, they might as well just skip the priest and have the penitent look up his penance in the book (or on the Internet ;-).
