BOSTON (Oct. 22) -- Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said he was considering banning alcohol sales near Fenway Park during the World Series, following rowdy celebrations of the Red Sox's league championship that turned deadly when a police officer shot a projectile into a crowd. Menino planned to meet with bar and nightclub owners on Friday and also said he would press universities to expel students found guilty of criminal conduct in the melee. "Since people won't accept responsibility, I, as mayor, will take it into my own hands," Menino said. Emerson College student Victoria Snelgrove, 21, died on Thursday, hours...

Bob Uecker played only six unremarkable years as a catcher in the major leagues, but his blend of quick wit and homespun wisdom has since made him a star in movies, on TV shows and in beer commercials - and it's turned him into a cultural icon. He is known by millions as Mr. Baseball, Harry Doyle - the oddball Indians announcer in the 1989 blockbuster movie "Major League" - and the Miller Lite front-row guy who couldn't catch a break. He also appeared as a character on the sitcom "Mr. Belvedere." On Sunday, at his induction into the broadcasters'...

WASHINGTON--Major League Baseball's labor negotiations involve two paradoxes. The players' union's primary objective is to protect the revenues of a very few very rich owners--principally, the Yankees'. The owners' primary objective is a more egalitarian distribution of wealth.

The union believes that unconstrained spending by the richest three teams pulls up all payrolls. Most owners believe that baseball's problems--competitive imbalance, the parlous financial conditions of many clubs--result from large and growing disparities of what are mistakenly treated as ``local'' revenues.

If you don't like baseball, stop reading now and move to another thread because it will drive you crazy. On the other hand, you might be living with someone who might be interested, so please bring this to his attention. It's that time of year again, and the major leagues are already well under way. I've been part of a fantasy baseball league (off and on) here in central Illinois for over 20 years. Now it can all be done by e-mail. Due to an unusually large number of retiring managers this year, we will need at least 7 new...

Rebecca A. Brady, 714 E. Fifth St., Brooklyn, writes: For years you have been using the derogatory term, "The Bums," in poisonous contrast to the inspiring, "The Bronx Bombers" for the Yankees. It is shuddering just to think of the pitiful contrast in connotations. In this age when we all know something about psychology, we should realise people respond to the name they are called. If you have children you would not call them "Bums" if you expected them to amount to anything. Every once in awhile a protest of this nature arrives in the mail, but this is the...

The New York Times Co. said yesterday that it will enter the bidding war to buy the Boston Red Sox by joining an investment group headed by television producer Tom Werner and skiing entrepreneur Les Otten.

The late addition of the Times Co. to the Werner-Otten group comes as the process to sell the team enters its final phase. As many as seven groups may file formal bids for the team, due by noon tomorrow, in what has become one of the most competitive sales of a franchise in the history of Major League Baseball.

Bo Belinsky, whose pitching prowess as a rookie with the Los Angeles Angels catapulted him to the life of a Hollywood playboy and the fleeting glitter of a 1960's celebrity, died Friday at his home in Las Vegas. He was 64.The cause was apparently a heart attack, The Associated Press reported. Belinsky had been treated for bladder cancer and vascular problems and had undergone hip-replacement surgery. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Baseball was barred from eliminating the Minnesota Twins next season when a judge on Friday ordered the team to play its 2002 home schedule in the Metrodome. Twins owner Carl Pohlad also was ordered not to sell the team unless the new owner agrees to have the team play its 2002 home schedule in the ballpark. The decision by Hennepin County District Judge Harry Seymour Crump throws into question last week's vote by baseball owners to eliminate two major league teams next season. While baseball owners didn't formally pick the teams when they met Nov. 6, they ...

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Having smashed Roger Maris' 37-year-old single-season home run record in the spring of 1999, Mark McGwire mused about his chances of catching Hank Aaron's career record. But the dream of breaking two of baseball's more famous records won't become a reality for McGwire, who announced his retirement Sunday night. He ended up 172 home runs short of Aaron's magical 755. Injuries led to a rapid descent for the former home run king, who was an expensive part on St. Louis Cardinals playoff teams the last two seasons. He strongly hinted of retiring several times this season, ...
