We need more FR Poet Laureates [Post an original poem and win a bun.]
September 18, 2003 | Me

Freepers,

Poetry is the soul of our hearts. We can converse, pontificate, and rally til the cows come home, but we really show our humanity, wit and truest selves in our poetry.

Doug From Upland is a fine example of such an artist. In his poems, we feel -- but we not only feel, we feel each other.

Let's show our true colors and show the world the Conservatives are not just lovers of freedom -- we're lovers of words, heart and feelings as well.

Post your original poem here. It need not rhyme. If you see a poem you like, vote for it by bumping it to the top. If you think you can do better, post a poem of your own.

Let's get the ball rolling with a poem of the silly variety -- remember, we don't have to be serious ALL the time. Here goes:

Plastic pie, plastic pie,
Shot a spastic in the eye.
Jesus heal'd that spastic's eye!
Pretty, pretty plastic pie!

Pretty, pretty plastic pie,
Much more fun than just plain pie!
Me oh my, oh why can't I
Have a pretty piece of pie?

Thanks Seem Hardly Sufficient

To all the fallen heroes
On this day of memory
We thank you for the service
You gave to keep us free

In the heat of battle
Many things can cross your mind
Your accomplishments and failures
Your loved ones left behind

But as so often happens
When the bullets fly
You fought for those beside you
For them you willingly died

Greater love has no man
Than for his friends to give his life
You gave yourself so others
Could have a family and a wife

My poor pen can't begin to give
A fitting epitaph
For those like you who gave it all
Who chose the Christ-like path

Thank you, thank you very much.

I met my first husband at church camp. Sadly, what I thought would be a fairy tale romance proved to be anything but. (But my daughter resulted from that union, so I can't regret the experience!) Short as it was, my second marriage was far happier; for some reason, I've been unable to write any poetry about that marriage -- although I have written several personal essays about my late husband. But, as usual, I digress....

I wrote this poem BEFORE Neil Diamond had similar moon/sun lyrics in "I Am, I Said" and before the end of my first marriage:

There Are No Rainbows at Night

The wind can bend each vulnerable tree;
As I, from your words, when we disagree.
Lightning pierces and masquerades as day,
Bright flashes of hope amid disarray.
We share life together; but not as one,
For I am the moon and you are the sun.
Thunder is bellowing, the sky rebels. ...
Echoed with snoring; it's silent, then swells.
Lingering moisture on the window pane. ...
Rain must be female, to choose to remain
While all around her explodes, then is gone.
The disruption's past . . . she's still clinging on.
And 'though you're beside me to keep me warm,
I never can sleep during a storm.

This one was written shortly after the end of my first marriage. ("Growies" are what we called the wild daisies that grew on the church camp property.)

Gathering Growies on Vespers Hill

I wonder perhaps if I ever will
gather growies again on Vespers Hill.

Paths on a hillside where
the daisies grew wild,
Sunshine seemed warmer then,
Was I but a child

to trust that life could be
what we wish for?
I gave you all of me,
You wanted more.

Changes weren't in our plans,
I wanted to stay
safe on a hillside with
a growie bouquet.

With heaven as close as
just touching the sky
and when seemed so much more
important than why.

Dreams were so easy then.
We lived for someday.
We thought our future but
a whisper away.

I wonder perhaps if I ever will
gather growies again on Vespers Hill.

The Citizen Soldier

The American soldier
Is an every-man
One reason we revere them
Is that we know
If they can do it
If they can be brave
All of us can

From the farms and factories
From the mines and from the fields
Come the best we have produced
America's precious yield

Over and over they misunderstood
These tyrants who laughed and scoffed
Their miscalculation was fatal
Thinking we as a nation were soft

But America protects its own
Our people and our friends
And by the grace of God
May it be so to the end

>>> Is there anything you can do to fix
"Happy Birthday to You?"<<<

Celebrations, tis true,
should be joyous and new.
"Happy Birthday," though hackneyed,
Is a sweet "I love you." :o)
(Hallmark version)

Happy Birthday?
Who knew?
Go away, please...now SHOO
What, a free gift you're selling?
And your grandmother, too!
(telemarketer (response) version)

Happy Birthdaze...too few
Sappy mirth craze ...phew phew
Go sell CRAzy some-place e.e.e.lse...
I'm full up here.... same to YOU!
(curmudgeon (Jack Nickolson) version)

Yielding to God,
letting go human will,
is a natural task
for the peaceful and still.

It was the White House intern named Monica.
From her knees played Bill’s bent harmonica.
After the obstructionist lied.
Impeachment was tried.
But then Republicans went limp; how ironica.

I love your Happy Birthday versions!

I've since lost (and forgotten) all of the lyrics, but my first parody was sung to the tune of Roger Miller's "King of the Road" and included the lyrics:

I like to go uptown.
Can't swim, but I know how to drown....

Here's a good place to post a "Rat" poem.

Don't forget to explain where the "rat" comes from. :)

  Ode to Despair

From their fear of Cruz and Gray Davis
The Rinos beseech, "Arnold, save us".
No principled talk
of Tom McClintock,
mutes their pitiful pleas to enslave us.

With only honor and good for protection,
From the Dems we expect just rejection.
So, let's melt down our guns,
kill our daughters and sons,
and embrace sodomy to win this election.

Thanks a ton, but I'm not one to win a bun or baldly banter about who won, so I'll lurk until the fun is done.

All his enemies worked toward his fall

But the Gipper stood up to them all

Freedom's flags were unfurled

His six words changed the world

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall"
