I met my first husband at church camp. Sadly, what I thought would be a fairy tale romance proved to be anything but. (But my daughter resulted from that union, so I can't regret the experience!) Short as it was, my second marriage was far happier; for some reason, I've been unable to write any poetry about that marriage -- although I have written several personal essays about my late husband. But, as usual, I digress....

I wrote this poem BEFORE Neil Diamond had similar moon/sun lyrics in "I Am, I Said" and before the end of my first marriage:

There Are No Rainbows at Night

The wind can bend each vulnerable tree;
As I, from your words, when we disagree.
Lightning pierces and masquerades as day,
Bright flashes of hope amid disarray.
We share life together; but not as one,
For I am the moon and you are the sun.
Thunder is bellowing, the sky rebels. ...
Echoed with snoring; it's silent, then swells.
Lingering moisture on the window pane. ...
Rain must be female, to choose to remain
While all around her explodes, then is gone.
The disruption's past . . . she's still clinging on.
And 'though you're beside me to keep me warm,
I never can sleep during a storm.

This one was written shortly after the end of my first marriage. ("Growies" are what we called the wild daisies that grew on the church camp property.)

Gathering Growies on Vespers Hill

I wonder perhaps if I ever will
gather growies again on Vespers Hill.

Paths on a hillside where
the daisies grew wild,
Sunshine seemed warmer then,
Was I but a child

to trust that life could be
what we wish for?
I gave you all of me,
You wanted more.

Changes weren't in our plans,
I wanted to stay
safe on a hillside with
a growie bouquet.

With heaven as close as
just touching the sky
and when seemed so much more
important than why.

Dreams were so easy then.
We lived for someday.
We thought our future but
a whisper away.

I wonder perhaps if I ever will
gather growies again on Vespers Hill.
