Doctors' group urges Atkins diet ban

WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Nutritionists are urging the top 10 U.S. hospitals to ban the Atkins diet, reports said Friday.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine announced Friday in Washington it hopes the hospitals will emulate England's Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, which is eliminating the controversial diet from its menus, fearing a link to kidney damage.

I don't know how you do it. If the atkins people were smart, they would be looking into this right now, however they were slow to the product race. Many companies like carborite, KETO and so on were much faster to start putting products on the market.

I know there are companies that sell by mail frozen locarb meals but they are pricey. You can find them HERE I suppose someone would have to start from scratch, but I'll bet that the frozen food giants will get on this bandwagon soon, lets hope.

That sounds good, although as most people know too many of the peanut butter cups have....you know...side effects.;^)

They are currently using a new sugar alcohol called Erythritol that doesn't have these side effects. Caborite makes a cady bar called ZCARB now and I didn't have any probs. I suspect most products with sugar alcohols will switch to this.

As for bread, I occasionally order Joe Bread, which is locarb and not bad tasting. I just learned about this bread which has gotten rave reviews but isn't anywhere near me, made by Osolo Some of that "bread" out there is disgusting.

I follow atkinsfriends.com and lowcarbluxury.com they have good recipes, product reviews and information. I'll check out the Delphi forum.

I just read an article about a woman patenting her locarb french fries....that would be nice!

Okay a question: I'm doing the induction phase of atkins, and I seem to be very speratic about calories and carbs. For instance, for the last two days I ate 1000 cals and 8 carbs, then today I ate 3000 cals 29 carbs. (I am a dancer, and after dancing 6 hrs today, I needed the extra food!)

Do you know though if this will mess up my system?? Is eating more than 20 carbs okay if I make it up on the next day??? Any input??

32 5'10" 211->183. Still have about 10 to 15 to go but I look and fell great now. I am now playing raquetteball 2 times a week and doing 10-20 miles of hiking every weekend. I am in as good of shape as I was when I was 21 now.

Sugar kills.

Well, I went on a 13 mile hike today (2500 feet ascent/descent) and I was fine on just a small bag (250 cals worth) of cashews, 2 protein bars and a handful of wild huckleberries I picked on the way. Normally I would of had a breakfast of bacon/eggs but I woke up late and needed to get on the road.

I agree it really tastes great. You can cheat a very little and roll any firm cheese, cut into rectangles in a bit of breadcrumbs and fry it in the same way and it will really surprise you how good it will taste with a little crunch.

Only about 15% of their membership are even doctors. They are strongly aligned with animal-rights activist groups, and THAT is why they are against Atkins: Because Atkins is a heavily protein-based nutritional approach, and that means LOTS OF MEAT.

<15%, Why so few medical professional?...What about medical ethics?..."Do no harm?"...I forgot, there are no ethics with PETA/ELF...only Bambi and Peter Cottontail. :|

..of course the brainless press (ABCNNBCBS) will eat this up...since science is not taught in schools like the 60s/70s...it so unP.C.

You really should read the book. You are supposed to have a minimum of 20 carbs a day during induction. These should come from mostly salads. You sound like you are physically active so you may require more carbs but make sure they are from good sources such as salads/berries/nuts and not processed sugar.

Personally, I do not follow atkins but I very much eat low carb foods. I try to keep my carbs under 60 a day. Every once in a while I will eat up to about 100 and some days I eat as few as 30 to 40.

Does drinking coffee keep the Atkins diet from working at its best level?

Regular caffeinated coffee will slow down the weight loss. Atkins recommends decafe.

I'm also a heavy coffee drinker and wasn't willing to suffer the headaches from withdrawl. I've slowly been weaning myself from the caffein. Normally I use 5 scoops for a 12 cup pot. The first day I used 4 scoops regular and one scoop decafe. The next day 3 scoops regular and 2 scoops decafe, etc... Over the course of 4 days I've almost cut out caffein with no side affects. Tomorrow will be the first day without caffein in over 30 years. I'll let you know how it goes...LOL

What the hell does that diet have you eat?

Low fat, low salt, low taste, very little meat, high in TVP and other carbs. Pretty much the oppisite of what I eat now.

I bet your doctor thought you were cheating eventhough you weren't. HEART HEALTHY !!! It MUST be good!

The Doctors wern't the problem. The rehab Nurses wanted to torture me for gaining weight!!!

So good you gained 40 pounds doing what you were told. I bet that was frustrating.

Yup, BIG TIME!

Now, I have adjusted my attitude. The way I figger, I am on the topside of the sod so it is a good day! If others don't like it . . .TOO FRIGGIN' BAD!

It sure does. Go to your local pharmacy and get the keto stix. They should turn purple. It will now take you a few days to get back into ketosis. Remember this is NOT a quantitavie diet it's a qualitative diet. It's the quality of the food (no carbs) which counts. If it runs, flies or swims eat as much of it as you want. If it grows from the ground, watch out.

Ping me if you decide to take Rika's request and do an all low carb thread. I have had to make my own ketchup, peanut butter, and cocktail sauce and they turned out pretty good. It would help keep it from getting boring to try new things. That egg salad recipe made with cream cheese is perfect for low carbing.
