WASHINGTON, DC --- "How can anyone take it seriously when a band like KISS delivers a so-called safe sex message?" asks Bryan Kemper, director of Rock For Life, (an American Life League division). "Their influence is bad enough without adding condoms to the equation."
The rock band KISS has added condoms to the line of merchandise available with the band's name or likeness on it. Following the success of the first KISS condom, the group has released a second. Paul Stanley of KISS was quoted as saying "social responsibility is important to me."
"How is selling condoms to kids socially responsible?" protests Kemper. "The condom is known to have high failure rates in stopping the spread of the HIV virus and other sexually transmitted diseases. If KISS really cared about social responsibility, they'd encourage children to abstain from sex until they are married."
"The fact that KISS also peddles coffins in their line of merchandise," continues Kemper "may be a silent admission that they already know that using a condom is like playing Russian Roulette. People will die."

Teen-agers warned about promiscuity
http://news.mywebpal.com/partners/701/public/news370720.html
A man raped a 15-year-old girl 37 years ago. After discovering she was pregnant, the girl later decided to give birth to the child instead of having an abortion.
Concerned about her ability to provide the child with a healthy and prosperous upbringing, the teen-age girl relinquished her newborn for adoption, hoping another family could give her baby what she couldnt.
Pam Stenzel doesnt know her biological mother or father. She doesnt know anything of her natural familys descent or medical dispositions.
What Stenzel does know, however, is how teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can wreak havoc on peoples lives.
Stenzel, who has addressed the United Nations and the U.S. Congress, has taken her message of sexual abstinence before marriage or maintaining a monogamous relationship to tens of thousands of children in the United States and other countries.
Stenzel has been speaking to students at middle and high schools in Lake and Sumter counties this week. She presents some alarming statistics that show a sharp rise in the number and types of STDs among teenagers and young adults and how teen pregnancy dramatically increases young mothers chances of living in poverty.
Stenzel said she wants to let people know the financial and medical consequences of premarital sex before they decide to engage in it. She was a pregnancy counselor before becoming a full-time motivational speaker eight years ago.
I had kids in my office who said, Nobody told me this, she said. There were a lot of teenagers who had no idea what the consequences were.
Stenzels sometimes comic, sometimes sassy, fast-talking presentation of facts and figures startled many of the girls and boys who attended the 11 school assemblies.
Her urging of girls to demand respect from boyfriends occasionally angered some of the older high-school boys, she said.
Stenzel, who gets much of her information from the Center of Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, said she wants to let teenagers and young adults know whats in store for them if they decide to engage in promiscuous sex.
If you have sex outside marriage or outside of a monogamous relationship, you will pay, she said. My goal is they wont be able to say, Nobody told me. I didnt know.
In 1967, one in 32 people was infected by an STD. Sixteen years later, the number was one in 18. Four years ago, the CDC reports one in four people are infected.
Stenzel said the most common sexual misconceptions concern pregnancy. We still have teenagers saying, If I dont get pregnant, Ill be all right. No way!
Girls are four times more likely of contracting an STD from sex than of getting pregnant, and many STDs, especially the viral form, are incurable and contagious.
Stenzel said once a teenager becomes pregnant her options become bad, terrible or even worse. There are consequences lifelong.
More than 80 percent of teen mothers live in poverty, and the majority of those girls will never graduate high school. The number one indicator of poverty (in the United States) is being a single parent, Stenzel said.
New laws require social security numbers of both parents on newborns birth certificates. The typical cost of a fathers child-support payments is between $60,000 and $80,000. Thats a serious responsibility, boys, Stenzel said. Youre going to have to live through whatever choices you make for the rest of your life. The best choice you can make is before you have sex.
More than 12,000 teenagers are on average contracting an STD per day, Stenzel said.
Fifty years ago doctors identified five STDs. Today there are 30, more than 30 percent of them incurable.
You get it for life, Stenzel said. These are serious diseases. They have serious consequences.
What makes it worse is many diseases are not readily detected and are discovered years later.
You cant treat a disease you dont know you have, Stenzel said. Every STD except one will hurt you, girls. Stenzel said girls need to draw the line with sexually aggressive boys.
There will always be boys who dont care, she said. You cant have love without respect. If you want respect, you have to demand it. Stenzel will speak 7 p.m. today at the Golden Triangle YMCA in Tavares.

While it is true that I think that condoms are better than nothing, I don't think that they are even 70% effective. Abstinence is the best choice for staying clean of disease & not being pregnant. By the way I use to live in Tavares and had a friend that worked in the Golden Triangle YMCA.

Suggesting that condoms are better than nothing is like suggesting that Russian roulette is safer with one bullet instead of two.

I disagree, I tell my kids not to have sex before their married. But I also remember what it's like to be a teenager, I was in high school in the late 70's early 80's and the only Aids I had ever heard about was a diet candy. I loved the women as much and as often as I could, i'm not bragging & it wasn't right but condoms seem to keep me clean & out of fatherhood so i'd have to say that a condom is the only alternative other than abstinance. If one is going to do it they definately need to have it wrapped.

In other words, they facilitated your doing what wasn't right.
Imagine teachers and parents telling kids something like this:
Shoplifting is wrong and if you're caught it could hurt you for the rest of your life. But since we know that kids often do shoplift anyway, here are some handy tips on how to reduce your chances of getting caught. Now, we're not telling you to go out and shoplift. But if you do, these tips can help keep you out of jail."

While I'm not sure that condoms are 100% effective in stopping the HIV virus, at least the kids may actually use a condom instead of riding bareback and that's definately better than nothing. That's like saying "If you are going to drive 100 through a school zone, wear your seat belt."

It was a different time then & if you look at my previous posts I said abstinence was what I suggested to my kids, I of course omitted my romps in High School & College. Let me ask you this, if your child came to you & said Mom/Dad i'm going to have sex and I can either use a condom or not use a condom. Now assuming that they're going to have sex regardless, would you tell them A) Use a condom or B) Don't use a condom? I think that the answer is obvious, it's not the best answer but it's the better choice of the two.

said Mom/Dad i'm going to have sex and I can either use a condom or not use a condom. The same thing I would tell them if they told me they were going to jump off the garage with or without an umbrella; Don't Do It.

Which brings up the question: does the Gene Simons model come with an... added appendage.

Both you and the kid have posed a
false dilemma. On the one hand, if my kid trusted me enough to tell me he was going to have sex, the likelihood is that he has been paying close attention to what I have had to say and to my attitudes on the subject over the years. On the other hand, if my kid were stupid enough to pose a false dilemma, he'd also be stupid enough to go ahead and do whatever it is he wanted to do.
On the third hand (the Zaphod Beeblebrox one, grown just for you), that a kid would come to his parent with such a request gives a pretty clear indication of the kind of messages about sex outside of marriage the parent has been sending to his kid over the years: 1. that it's okay, 2. that the parent hasn't given the kid enough information to know that a. a condom offers only some degree of protection against only some sexually transmitted diseases, b. that the dangers of premarital/promiscuous sex aren't limited to STDs, and c. that he'd be far better off to just say no.

Your answer is the responsible parental answer, I agree 100%. But read my post completely, what if they're going to do it regardless of what you say. I think the Condom is the right choice if they decide to have sex, even if it's against your wishes.
To: aruanan
I don't think that you fully understand my position, listen closely. I have taught my kids that premarital sex is a no-no. But what you don't seem to grasp is that the Zaphod Beeblebrox kid (whatever the hell that's suppose to mean) is the majority of kids nowaday's. Some people can live in a fantasy land and think that their kid is never going to have pre marital sex, but I'm a realist and the possibility is alway's there. I have never, not even one time have I encouraged or insinuated in anyway that it was alright for either of my children to have premarital sex. But like I said, if they decide to I would prefer that they used a good mainbrand condom in the event that it happens. Again some of you may live in the past where Pre-marital sex doesn't happen, but in the 21st century it happens more often then not.
