Brutal New AP-NORC Polling Destroys Democrat Narrative on the Debt Ceiling Fight
Red State ^ | 05/20/2023 | Bonchie

Are Republicans actually about to win a political messaging battle? It’d certainly be shocking given the party’s track record, but that’s the story of a new Associated Press poll that is just brutal for the Democrat narrative on the debt ceiling fight.

According to the results of the AP-NORC poll, a whopping 63 percent of Americans want a debt ceiling deal that includes measures to decrease the federal deficit. That compares to just 19 percent who want a debt ceiling increase to be passed without any conditions.

Twenty-one percent of adults are following the debate over increasing the national debt limit closely and another 38% are following it somewhat closely. Similar numbers feel they understand the debate extremely or very well (20%) or somewhat well (41%).

Nineteen percent of the public think the debt limit should be increased without conditions, while 63% want terms on reducing the federal budget deficit included with any debt limit increase. Democrats are more likely than Republicans to support increasing the debit limit without any condition.

Democrats have been banking on the idea that Americans are going to blame Republicans for a possible default no matter what. That’s exactly what’s happened in the past, especially with government shutdown fights, with the press flip-flopping its position depending on who is in power. If a Republican is president, shutdowns are always the president’s fault. If a Democrat is president, shutdowns are always Congress’ fault.

But for once, it appears most Americans have had enough of being played. Democrats are out there pushing ridiculous ideas like using the 14th Amendment or minting a $1 trillion coin to pay the nation’s debt. But why do that when the vast majority simply want a deal with spending cuts attached? Especially when both of the former moves would likely be found to be illegal.

I have to give House Speaker Kevin McCarthy credit. During the battle over whether he’d assume that role, I wrote several articles saying that he deserves a chance after he made concessions to conservatives on committee assignments and the rules package. So far, he’s absolutely delivered.

Almost no one thought he could unite the Republican caucus to pass a debt ceiling bill. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was so certain McCarthy would fail that he joined hands with Democrats to pass a lame-duck omnibus bill because he didn’t think the new majority could govern. Boy was he wrong, and someone should probably ask him about that.

Moving back to the White House, Biden has done what he’s done his entire failed career, which is to grossly miscalculate. He thought he could just point fingers and have the press do his bidding, but Americans aren’t buying what he and his party are selling. With the deadline just a few days away, there’s no real time to change public opinion either. Democrats now have a very simple choice to make. Either they drive the nation off a fiscal cliff and take the blame, or they offer some modest concessions and get a deal done. For the first time in a long time, Republicans look to have outmaneuvered their opposition.

"Brutal New AP-NORC Polling Destroys Democrat Narrative on the Debt Ceiling Fight"

As a side note to this thread, please consider the following.

The debt ceiling is based on unconstitutional federal taxing and spending imo, spending that the very corrupt, post-16th (direct taxation) and 17th (popular voting for federal senators) Amendment (16&17A) ratifications Congress cannot reasonably justify under its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers, and a few other constitutionally enumerated expenses.

So the ultimate remedy for the unconstitutional debt is for Trump-supporting Democratic and Republican patriots to support their state lawmakers in repealing 16&17A.

If the repeal amendment was strictly limited to repealing those amendments, then relatively or ideally no discussion would be needed before ratification imo.

In fact, I challenge the states to "ram" the repeal amendment through the amendment process faster than Pelosi irresponsibly rammed the unconstitutional (imo) Obamacare bill through the House.

I wasn’t a big McCarthy fan when he took over, but he is a master salesman - perfect for the job he now holds. Hope he doesn’t let me down.

This battle over the debt ceiling ‘could’ be epic, in that, it could return the House to its Constitutional role of setting the budget. Once that becomes the norm, as long as the House stays in power, it stops the progressives in their tracks - they’ll have to resort to burning down cities again to get their way.

Biden and Schumer know this - that’s why I’m predicting Biden will allow this to go up to the edge, and then pull a 14th amendment EO to “save the country” from those Evil MAGA republicans.

We’re only in the first quarter of this one …

After reading all the negative posts about McCarthy here on FR, I expected him to be a sellout. I am pleasantly surprised McCarthy has exceeded all my expectations. I guess FR posters can be wrong sometimes.

If polls aligned with government actions we would not have open borders allowing the importation of so many of the world’s diseases and leftist voters.

McCarthy has to be very careful as Biden's negotiators are not faithful to what they say. I'm going to wait this one out until I give him praise like that.

The Dems are master negotiators of Deceit; They will blame their opponents for the things they are doing.

Remember the Rules for Radicals.

My prayers go with McCarthy as he needs all the help he can get.

Just for the record...I have always liked Kevin McCarthy.

I think he is cute...and I think he is a Patriot.

And...I think he has potential for future possibilities.

I think McCarthy is holding to his agreement to essentially do Trump’s bidding, which caused the holdouts (Gaetz et al) to vote for him for speaker. Yes, I think Trump and his circle are pulling the strings because Trump does intend to right the ship and make America great again.

democrats are the enemy as are all democrat party voters. They are bankrupting this country to usher in a totalitarian state more so than we already have.

They think the debate should go like this: We’re out of free stuff. Give us more free stuff. Give them more free stuff. Why won’t the Republicans let us get more free stuff? They’re meeeeaaaan!

But it isn’t going that way. Is gas-lighting no longer working? I sure hope so.

To raise the ceiling, first the borders must be closed.

open border = no money

The Sixteenth Amendment gave Congress the power to “lay and collect taxes on incomes..”. Up until its’ passage, the federal government was financed mostly by tariffs. Once the government got their hands on people’s incomes, is when they became very powerful. Power is proportional to wealth.

“I guess FR posters can be wrong sometimes.’

Yes, like Trump can win in 2024 given nothing fundamentally has changed (in most every relevant respect), and much as gotten worse, since 2020.

Yep, it’s the DC shell game..

Federal budgets are never legitimately really “cut” by normal definitions. What the Democrats and the Fed borg call “cuts” are simply actually less increases than they asked for..So a 10% increase in the budget over the previous year, becomes a 5% “cut” because the agency asked for a 15% increase.

Thank you for reply Elsie.

"It appears those words mean nothing: without some to ENFORCE them."

Ordinary, constitutionally low-information citizen voters abuse their 17th Amendment powers by electing federal senators who promise voters unconstitutional federal spending programs to get themselves elected. So voters can also point the finger of blame for unconstitutionally big federal government to themselves imo.

Yep. 2022 was proof of that. An absolutely dreadful POSPOTUS, high inflation and a rotten economy, and the best the GOP could come up with was barely taking the House and still losing the Senate.

Did you sober up yet? Food and healthcare inflation is 10 times worse than during Trump admin. Illegals are coming in 10 times more than during Trump admin. No foreign wars started or fought during Trump admin. Biden already spent 100’s of Billions of BORROWED money in Ukraine to jack up the national debt. We can barely pay interest on the debt now. Americans will pay interest in PERPETUITY for money borrowed for Ukraine war.

If you thing nothing has changed, time to sober up.
