Ron DeSantis loses again to Disney
Vox ^ | April 20, 2023 | Nicole Narea

Florida Republican Gov. DeSantis has been foiled by Disney once again.

The new board DeSantis appointed to oversee the company’s Orlando theme parks has discovered a new wrinkle in its plans. The board’s chairman said Wednesday that another “11th hour agreement” was signed before the board took over that allows Disney to set its own utility rates for its resorts through 2032. By that time, DeSantis, who is term-limited and cannot run for reelection in 2026, will be long gone.

It’s the latest development in the ever-expanding culture war between DeSantis and Disney executives, who angered the governor last year after they publicly opposed his “Don’t Say Gay” law, which prevents teachers from talking about LGBTQ+ issues or people. That fight escalated last month when it came to light that Disney had managed to quietly disenfranchise the new board without DeSantis’s allies taking notice, and has continued as the governor tries to clamp down on the company in retaliation.

DeSantis’s efforts to punish Disney for being “woke” have become a political headache, with his potential 2024 Republican presidential primary opponents, including former President Donald Trump and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, using it to go on the attack. But at this point, DeSantis is probably in too deep to retreat.

I’m mixed on this. I certainly support fighting in-your-face workerism from corporations. The question is, what are the best means to do so? We can certainly boycott, and that can potentially be very effective. Disney should have kept their nose out of this and minded their own business.

On the other hand, it’s not illegal for them to weigh in on such issues. We as consumers can and probably should boycott them. But for a Governor to suddenly dig up this long standing contract and make an issue out of it just because Disney publicly disagreed with him - well if it hasn’t crossed the line, it’s getting uncomfortably close to doing so.

On top of that, if you’re going to go to war with Disney because you don’t like where they stand on LBTQ issues, you had better be smart about it. It seems to me that DeSantis rushed into this confrontation with Disney to score political points. Maybe he really bought into the B.S. about what an amazing leader he is. Now he’s locked horns with Disney, a move which is not likely to yield anything resembling a victory. It’s certainly not going to stop Disney from pushing “wokeism”.

Whoever is writing Desantis’s scripts is too slow and not at all clever.

It’s a little too obvious that he’s a character in a play and they aren’t feeding him
lines fast enough.

I got my first RDS direct mail piece yesterday. The theme is “Won’t Back Down”, red/white/blue (duh).

The 2024 version of Jeb Bush.

The “donor community” is in for more sadness.

They haven’t lost anything. The game is far from over. If a baseball team hits a home run in the first inning the game is not over. The govt. can bring the force to bear that it requires to get lawful compliance from their in state corporations. Just because this takes time doesn’t mean we’ve lost or anything else. We’re in the early innings. If I was Governor I would sign an executive order closing Disneyworld until a satisfactory oversight regime could be put into place. Require Disney to continue paying their employees until such a time as the park opens up again since their malfeasence caused this situation. Then Disney would have to take you to court to try to overturn that order. Put the ball in their court

This is what happens when the swamp fights back.
DeSantis reminds me of the kid whose parents always let him win at chess only to find out later that he was never really all that good. He just never had any real competition before.

Before DeSantis, nobody was fighting Disney. He got us into the fight, and he’s been trying his best. The fight will be long term.

One suspects that disney has a committee of fungal attorneys working on this, while Florida keeps the attention to the project in balance with other pressing needs.

Disney loses no matter what, as the public learns about the icky goings on behind the once-noble brand.

For example, the Babylon Bee satirical bits have been just priceless. And they get shared around the offices and clubs and e-mail and text lists.

They understand that Trump, the Pfizer-Disney candidate, is a sure loser but DeSantis might possibly defeat them.

Read “The Mouse Betrayed”!
Icky things have been going on in MagicKingdom Land” for a long time! Kudos to DeSantis for forcing Disney to behave like a normal company in Florida subject to Florida laws and not a separate sovereign power! If Disney doesn’t like it they should close up shop and leave!

Disney can do with its income as it wishes, but I don’t have to support it. I’m on thevside that says adults can do what they wish, but don’t touch children.

The Christian values are only forbthe Christian, but natural law governs everybody. If you live contrary to natural law, you should reap the consequences.

You really have to keep up. The agreement signed by the old board is null and void because they skipped some steps in the process, among other deficiencies. I know you want to promote anything that you think makes Desantis look bad, but this is pathetic. Strange how “conservatives” go all in on supporting groomers and their enablers just because Trump says so…

Yes, this.

That said, Disney cannot win, as they are exposing their inner repellent culture.

I had a clever Disney print necktie (with Micky and Goofy playing soccer) that I was going to give to one of my grandkids. Yesterday, it found its way into the garbage.

Over the decades, I've been to both Disney parks with my fam, (had a great time) and it is astonishingly easy to avoid doing that ever, ever again.

Well it's an interesting fight just the same. At the least we see DeSantis take on such a fight as he has also done since he's served.

If he runs for President there's no doubt he'll fight IMO but unfortunately he would still need a period of time to adjust to the climate in Washington and we really don't have that time. Plus he will want to run for a second term so there’s that and all that means.

Whereas Trump can hit the ground running without that learning curve De Santis will need. Additionally Trump has just 4 yrs then to accomplish his feats for the nation so he's not going to let any grass grow under his feet.

I like DeSantis and all he's done for his state. However I think better to know the Washington terrain well and DeSantis doesn't have that edge.

“They may very well beat DeSantus, as they have the best lawyers.”

DeSantis is in over his head. He has consistently been headed off at the pass at each political grabbing effort. Not much of a product for a political campaign and this is a perfect observation of why he’s getting hammered in the polls by Trump.

Did you ever see the Venture Brothers episode that spoofed Disney & its relationship to Florida? It was hilarious & spot on!

Did you forget that Desantis has already been in Washington? He has a lot more experience than Trump did when he took office - which is probably why he has been able to run such a tight and effective administration as governor.

“He’s a politician. Trump is different.”

Trump runs on donations. He’s outstanding on some issues but hardly a conservative - as his COVID response showed. AND his endless “stimulus spending” - which he wanted to continue into 2021, just as Biden did.

Trump is all about himself. If it advances TRUMP, he’s for it. If not, he’s against - and that is why he had no allies left by 2020. He craps on his friends just to warn them and oddly enough a lot of people don’t respond well.

DeSantis isn’t flawless either. NO ONE IS. DeSantis is more conservative than Trump and better at building alliances. But he could crash and burn before 2024. Same with Trump. Heck, we can’t even be certain who will be ALIVE in November of this year!

If Trump wins the nomination, I’ll vote for him. Not enthusiastically - unlike 2020 - but I’ll vote for him. IF he wins the nomination. Because he would be better than the Democrat, even if they replace Joe Biden.

But I’m WAY past believing in Trump as Savior. Great on some issues. Horrible on others. Better than anyone the DNC accepts, but that is a very low standard. Unhappily, it is the one that drives almost all of my voting for the last 40 years....

Trump agrees with marxist vox.

And people here are fine with that.

At least I can support Ron DeSantis without being a hypocrite.

Stop with the lies. No he is not perfect but he is the only one standing up to a lot.

You pick and choose battles, you don’t engage all of them. If he didn’t pick your battle,

THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD GET INVOLVED INSTATE OF PISSING AND WHINING.

Another person like myself whose main motivation in the past for voting was to deny someone power - always a Rat!
2020 was one of the few times I voted positively - to grant or in this case to continue giving someone power - Trump!

Sort of agree in general with your post.
