The popular weight loss drug Wegovy is now available to children as young as 12.
Danish manufacturer Novo Nordisk announced that the Food and Drug Administration had extended the drug's approval to include children. It had previously received regulatory approval for use in adults last year.
In clinical trials, teens aged 12 to 17 who took the weekly injection lost 14 percent of their body weight over 64 weeks. This nearly matches the trials for adults, where recipients lost 15 percent of their weight after 68 weeks.
Wegovy, and its sister drug Ozempic, have rocketed to popularity in 2022 because of their unprecedented success assisting in weight loss. Tech mogul Elon Musk credited it for his body transformation, and there are rumors Hollywood stars like Kim Kardashian also used it.
'The prevalence of teen obesity in the U.S. continues to rise, affecting teens and their families. Now, more than ever, we need new options to support teens,' Dr Aaron Kelly, a pediatric obesity expert at the University of Minnesota, said in a statement.

The teens started with an average weight of 235lbs. In the group the used Wegovy, an average of 33lbs were lost across the 16 month trial.
A third of teens that used the drug managed to lose at least one-fifth of their overall body weight.

Childhood obesity is a problem but drugs aren’t the solution.
In this case, it has worked for me. I’ve lost over 60 pounds since I started taking it as Ozempic, without trying to lose weight. I plateued for a year or so, then my doctor upped my dose and I’ve started losing weight again.
The stuff kills your appetite - I eat a little and I’m full.
A1C staying around 7 and I have not noticed any adverse effects. I, too, am skeptical of any claims made for a medicine since the clot shots were pushed on us to reduce the population. Don’t trust a word they say, including “and” and “the”. but semiglutide seems to work for me.
There is no mRNA in this injection. Not everything requires the Pavlovian response of vaccination. There are other things in the world, believe it or not
I’ve lost 55 pounds and My A1C is 5.4 as of November.

Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) + bupropion can do the same thing without the cost, controversy or need for clinic visits. I’m not obese and am taking these for a different reason, but am losing weight quite noticeably and without any effort. At least one other FReeper is taking the combo as well.
What it sounds like is that you are stuck (pun intended) on this drug for life. That’s great news for the companies that make it, at over $16K/year.
Other than getting fat again, what are the long term consequences of quitting the shots? Withdrawal/psychological problems?
It's not. It's the same medicine as Ozempic which is a diabetes medication that's been out for years. The dosage was changed and they approved it for weight loss under a different. It's got nothing to do with mRna.
I’m taking Ozempic and have gained about 20 lbs.
Couldn't they have named it WeLoveTheGovy?
Some insurances cover it, some don't.
Or you could go to another country and buy it for 10% the cost of the U.S. because we're getting anally raped by big pharma. That's the reason they buy off congress, so they can keep doing it.
If you want to know one of the main reasons the presidency was stolen from Trump in 2020 look at big Pharma. Trump made one of his centerpieces the lowering of our obscene drug prices which, as mentioned, are about 10X what everybody else in the world pays (don't give me any BS about cost of research, they do it because they can). Whether or not you agree that the Covid shots were a good thing, in November 2020 everybody was anxiously waiting for them to come out and if they'd been announced before the election Trump would have gotten a big boost from it. If you recall they were announced a week after the elections. That was not coincidental, the drug companies withheld the announcement until after the election because they desperately wanted Trump out of office. Trump was threating to clamp down on the ridiculous drug pricing in the U.S. and they wanted him out of office bad, he was going to cost them a fortune. The timing of the Covid shots announcement was designed to harm Trump.
Is that available in pill form?
Seriously though, there is no reason for people to be overweight nowadays. Lay off the frikken carbs and start walking (and move on up to running, biking, or rowing, etc., as soon as you're ready).
“Have you seen what schools feed kids nowadays? “
Haven’t seen current day school lunches. But in the ‘50s and ‘60s they were pretty much high-carb crap. (I was happy with the fried egg sandwich I took every day.)
“Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) + bupropion”
Is that an NSAID?
“Trump made one of his centerpieces the lowering of our obscene drug prices which, as mentioned, are about 10X what everybody else in the world pays “
Exactly. PDJT threatened the end of the Pharma Industrial Complex’s gravy train. They are SO powerful!
That's all well and good. Everybody knows all that stuff already and it's not working for the 40% of the country that is obese. Also if you think it's just the U.S. then you haven't been to Europe lately, the U.K. and Germany are danged near as fat as we are. For whatever reason, people aren't able to get the weight off and the obesity is causing all kinds of health problems. You can wag your finger at them and snarl about how they're fat asses or we can apply modern medicine to fix some of the problem which in turn will make their lives better while reducing the enormous associative medical costs of obesity that we spend every year. The only downside is the sanctimonious won't have as many people to look down their noses at.
Some people have health issues that prohibit walking, cycling, etc. I lost a decent amount of weight doing no/low carb, without exercise. Am slowly adding a little more carbs and probably am gaining some weight, but not much.
I don't care if people want to be lard-asses. It's their business if they are too stupid and lazy to improve their lives. But they can't say it's in their genes and/or there's nothing that works (that's what they used to say).
All that said, there are some things that are still a matter of personal responsibility. Weight/health are one (or two).
As an aside, I have an old girlfriend I speak with regularly. She has always had a problem with her weight. When I mention keto and exercise, she just gets mad. She has health problems due to her weight (she's just pleasingly plump) and even her doctor has suggested keto and exercise.
She spends over $500/month on blood pressure meds and they really don't work, but she refuses to consider alternatives just because...(i.e., no reason, just stubborn).
About the carbs, I completely agree. When I add even a few extra carbs, my weight starts shooting back up.
I added some low carb tortillas to my diet last year and when I went to the doctor (and had a blood test) my cholesterol and blood pressure had climbed back into dangerous territory. Those tortillas were so tasty, but I think they were mislabeled about their being low carb. I cut them out of my diet and in my next appointment, cholesterol and BP were back under control.
“She has always had a problem with her weight. When I mention keto and exercise, she just gets mad.”
Some day you’ll learn that criticizing someone’s weight — especially a woman’s — is not a winning proposition. Add a condescending and self-righteous tone to it... yikes!
