The nation's largest annual conference for Millennial and Gen-Z conservatives, AmericaFest, drew tens of thousands of attendees who seem divided on who should win the 2024 nomination—a troubling sign for the former president.
As Trump acolytes, like his eldest son Donald Trump Jr. and unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, sang praises for Trump's 2024 campaign, many event speakers avoided endorsing the former president and interviews with attendees revealed that many aren't prepared to commit to another Trump term just yet.
The four-day event in Phoenix, Arizona, is a glaring red flag for Trump's campaign. It signals there may not be a welcomed embrace awaiting the GOP figurehead in the Republican primaries.
"The fact that a previously elected president, head of the party with universal name ID is having any trouble solidifying enthusiastic support [from] the GOP faithful is a massive blinking warning sign," Republican strategist Alex Patton told Newsweek. "No one is just given the nomination. The former President is gonna have to work for it if he wants to win."
"People who formerly were openly pro-Trump are now hedging their bets," GOP political consultant Christopher Nicholas said.
While Trump has lambasted polls that show Florida Governor Ron DeSantis neck-and-neck with him for the 2024 GOP nomination, AmericaFest attendees reaffirmed that many conservatives remain divided on who to support for a presidential bid—even though DeSantis has yet to officially announce a 2024 run.
A number of eventgoers said that while they're fans of both Republicans, Trump has become so polarizing that it may be in the party's best interest to support a candidate who independent voters could get behind.

Newsweek; yawn.
“Let me know when DeSantis has an actual platform because if it sounds like more Neocon nonsense his poll numbers would collapse overnight .”
well, what would you guess will be on his platform? He has repaired elections, fired prosecutors, shipped criminal aliens out, taken on woke corporations, smashed teachers unions and blocked mandatory Covid vaxing to name a few. It won’t be crying about the fraudulent election.
The Donald will be 47 come 2024.
A mixed sign: In the 7 races where a former President ran:
The former President won his party’s nomination and the election 1 time. (Cleveland).
The former President lost his party’s nomination and did not make a third-party run 3 times. (Van Buren [1st], Grant, Hoover). Of those 3 times, the President’s party went 2-1.
The former President lost his party’s nomination and DID run third party 2 times. (Van Buren [2nd], Roosevelt). Of those 2 times, the President’s former party went 0-2. And the third-party run almost certainly changed the outcome of both elections: Cass and Taft would have beaten Taylor and Wilson but for Van Buren’s and Roosevelt’s third-party runs.
So, if history is any guide, the odds are against Trump winning the GOP nomination, but the GOP nominee has a good chance of winning if Trump does not run third party.
One bad piece of history: One of the two men to defeat a former President for his party’s nomination and then win the Presidency was then assassinated by a supporter of the former President.
I’ve watched most of this and as far as I can tell it’s been extremely pro-Trump. If people were pumping up DeSantis, I didn’t hear it.
This is an excellent event — more religious than political in many ways.
Kari Lake and Vivek Ramaswamy were so inspiring. Charlie Kirk’s opening speech was, too. But all speakers and panels were great.
“DeSantis is supported by all the wrong money people.”
Do you think he should have a “loyalty” or “approved” list of people who dontate? It is obvious from his actions that he doesn’t and won’t kowtow to them which you are implying.
“He’s in Florida , it’s all fags”
Don’t be hurt because you haven’t got your invitation.

Another Never Trumper heard from.
The Trump flags aren't flying like they used to.
‘Tisn’t the season for Trump flags. Summertime is better.
Trump spent too much time trying to win over people who hated his guts. He'd invite him into his circle and they undermined him at every turn.
It's as if he was self-conscious about never fitting in where he wanted to. He always wanted to be a part of the "cool kids" club of the powerful Manhattan social scene but they'd never accept him. No matter how much money he had, how famous he was, to them he was always just a "loudmouth from Queens" and it ate him up.
I have no idea what his platform would be. That’s why I said I would listen to him he came out with one.
The TRUTH is there was a "Red Wave".. we got more votes, but Democrats just had MORE BALLOTS.
Agreed. But it's up to him if he decides he wants it.
Newsweek. I can’t believe this rag is still being printed.
I never see this piece of garbage in any of my doctors offices.
Check the American political scene this time next year.
President Trump will still be the dominant force--as other contenders bloom & fade.
I like DeSantis. I don’t question his conservative credentials. I just question whether he’s someone who can take the firestorms of political attacks from national media and survive—they can be brutal and fatal. We know president Trump can withstand them, he’s been tested and has survived on the political battlefront again and again. Besides, DeSantis still needs more time on the vine before we can declare him a hardy vintage.
Indeed, Trump’s 4-years administration, his political battle scars, his love of America and justice demands that Trump’s 2020 loss be vindicated by his ‘24 win. At least, I pray.
“They” can “move” toward DeSantis all they want but this is just more psy-ops from our enemies in the media.
