Ukraine is facing technical problems with western artillery amid war with Russia. According to New York Times, one-third of the howitzers sent to Ukraine have developed snags. A U.S. official said that a third of the 350 howitzers sent by the west to Ukraine are out of action. The New York Times reported that the United States Department of Defense is concerned over the development. The U.S. reportedly set up a repair facility in Poland to fix "faulty" weapons, the NYT reported.

The trouble is that they are short ranged vs modern guns, and so much more vulnerable to counterbattery. But needs must.
If the Russians have new guns available they are surely going to the front. The other big problem seems to be ammo for them. That seems to be the big reason for bringing the D1s out of reserve.
—”Also there are millions of shells in old soviet depots which usage time expiring soon. “
Then why are the Russians continuing to use worn-out barrels and endangering their own positions?
Experienced artillery crew members are hard to replace.
And they leave the dead and injured on the field and run.
It is not like they pound a few aiming stakes in the ground and the gun does the rest.
Also, why are they purchasing artillery rounds from the Norks and others?
Is truck. Gun fits in truck. Road is good (and they seem to be). All bridges are open (and they seem to be). Road is clear to Poland (or apparently Lithuania for the German ones). There are no Russians flying interdiction over the highways. Poles are friendly and engineers from everywhere are there at the depot, and if there are skills or parts wanted then that’s a problem the Americans (or French or British or Poles or...) can solve on their end. It’s good to have friends.
What magic American fairy dust is needed? Problems are there to be solved, not assumed into paralyzing appearances.
Ukraine has a considerable arms industry.
————
Ukraine HAD a considerable arms industry. Most those factories are now a pile of rubble. Vlad has done well de- industrializing the Ukies, as well de- energizing them. It will take years to rebuild the destroyed factories.
Ukraine is now a welfare queen nation, their billions of debt is unpayable, currency, economy, manufacturing, exports destroyed, infrastructure crippled….
Zelensky’s leadership has destroyed Ukraine.
“THERE IS NO DEPOT FOR REPAIR.”
Yes, depots for repair of Ukrainian equipment have been established, and are operating, in at least Lithuania, Poland, Germany and the Ukraine itself.
Training programs are also established in those countries, as well as the UK and USA
The Russians seem to have destroyed remarkably little of that. And the critical part is the personnel, not the buildings. You can ship in machine tools into some ex farm building and restore production of something. Or, indeed, just speculating, you can send your guys to Romania and have them make Stugna ATGMs there. Strategic depth is useful.
Intelligent people are resilient.
Also, why are they purchasing artillery rounds from the Norks and others?==
Who says they purchase them? Western press. C’mon guy)))...
Hmm. There are hundreds of billions in Russian assets sequestered in Europe, the US and elsewhere. Oh where oh where will Ukraine get the money to rebuild? Oh wait, I spy with my little eye...
“THERE IS NO DEPOT FOR REPAIR. There is no helo, no truck, no return for maintenance. It is fire until breakdown, and/or you are out of ammo.”
Actually, the program’s been in place since 2012. Now being done in Poland. So they’ll be back on the line in time for the ‘Big Zhukov-and-Konev’ spring offensive.

Oh, and Excalibur rounds compensate for barrel wear.
Doesn’t anyone have some leftover German 88’s or French 75’s?
Several videos out there of the M777’s taking hits from loitering munitions. Cheap drones are taking out expensive equipment. Drones spotting for artillery too. Boom
My caveat was that you have sufficient tubes and mechanics. However you’d be amazed at what even organizational maintenance folks can accomplish. My howitzer battery maintenance guys routinely did depot level jobs to keep howitzers running in the cold war days in Germany. Pretty tough to get artillery parts in a cavalry squadron.
I doubt Russian boys bleeding out and dying in the cold dirt of Ukraine tonight are “laughing”. Despite 9 months of genocidal attacks Ukraine is still Ukraine. Hilariously, that drives the fruits and nuts of the internet crazy.

Good point. The Soviets undertook a titanic effort to dismantle their factories and transport them to safer sectors in Siberia and the Caucasus….more than 30,000 tanks by the end of 1942….like then, Russia today has no shortages of commodities, metals, materials, unlike the West.
Russia today has far less people to use than it did in WWII.
Much of their advanced equipment depends on supplies from the West.
I do not claim to know how this will turn out.
Ukraine has surprised everyone with how resourceful and resilient they have been, just as Russia has surprised everyone with how corrupt, hollow, and poorly lead they have been.
All of that is probably changing as we write. Anyone who is sure how it will work out is delusional.
It is not at all clear who will prevail and how it will work out.
I highly suspect Ukraine is seriously working on an atom project.
It appears to be the only thing which major powers will respect.
I'm thinking poor maintenance.
Travis, you do not have the expertise here.
The M777 was not designed for light duty in only the GWOT.
It was designed as a replacement for the M198.
It went through extensive testing at Yuma Proving Ground.
During the testing, we broke it numerous times, resulting in design changes.
I worked with that program for years.
Part of the idea of smart artillery rounds is you do not have to fire nearly as many.
While the Excaliber round is a very good smart munition, it is very expensive.
Because of that, we developed replacement smart fuses for regular 155mm artillery rounds. They are much, much cheaper than the Excaliber. As I recall, the do not have quite the range of the Excaliber, but I don't know the exact details on the range, for good reason.
The NYT source is: Artillery Is Breaking in Ukraine. It's Becoming a Problem for the Pentagon.
Notice what is directly under the headline: "Ukrainian soldiers are firing thousands of shells daily, forcing the U.S. to replace gun barrels across the border in Poland."
For those who don't know better, like journalists, and those who should know better and pretend they don't, this means the US sent artillery to Ukraine, and the artillery's maintenance to Poland at the same time.
This is a non story over a non existent problem.
OK, here you go...LOSER.
