Ukraine is facing technical problems with western artillery amid war with Russia. According to New York Times, one-third of the howitzers sent to Ukraine have developed snags. A U.S. official said that a third of the 350 howitzers sent by the west to Ukraine are out of action. The New York Times reported that the United States Department of Defense is concerned over the development. The U.S. reportedly set up a repair facility in Poland to fix "faulty" weapons, the NYT reported.

>>> “Typical wear and tear. They go to depot for repair then shipped back. It’s pretty much been that way since WWI. HIMARS and MLRS do the same. Break down-depot-return.” <<<

Perfect example of NOT getting it. Perfect.

Our stuff has been built to airlift in a no-threat environment to some mountain or high point, and fire some rounds in support of our ground forces, who were already well protected in the air, with total air supremacy.

A titanium 777 gets airlifted to a peak in A-stan, and days go by with no missions. On a really hot and heavy day, it fires 10-20 very carefully and slowly adjusted shots, based on observation by our many freely flying air assets, etc.

In Ukraine, howitzers are fired 100s of times per day, ammunition available. And when they break down, bases on 10-30X the “duty cycle” of weapons used in the GWOT, what in the EFF “go to depot for repair” are you possibly talking about????

You might as well say, “When the systems break down in combat, click your ruby slippers and go back to Kansas where it’s safe.”

DUDE!!! Take a cold shower! Smell the coffee! THERE IS NO DEPOT FOR REPAIR. There is no helo, no truck, no return for maintenance. It is fire until breakdown, and/or you are out of ammo.

Ukraine is not the GWOT, where the entire might of the U.S. military is arrayed against goat-humpers in sandals.

Jeeee.....zussss..... No wonder folks are so blind to reality.

Rainbows, my little ponies and unicorns have a better chance in Ukraine than “return to depot for repair.”

Bunch of idiot reporters. Our weapons were never intended for REAL combat.

They’re not weapon systems, they’re taxpayer funded jobs programs.

Ukraine does not have the manpower for dedicated support units.

This is a nothing-burger click-bait story.

Without continual preventative maintenance and service based on hourly usage most military equipment will “break down”.

The US military spends a LOT of time on maintenance. The Ukraine does not have the manpower or the time so they are pushing the equipment they have really hard.

This is also older equipment as others have stated.

Syria - Another Turkish Invasion Is Imminent
[If you can’t see how this relates to the proxy war in Syria......]

After two years of relative quietness the situation in Syria is again escalating.

https://www.moonofalabama.org/2022/11/syria-another-turkish-invasion-is-imminent.html

This follows a terror attack in Istanbul two weeks ago allegedly committed by a woman who had traveled there from the Kurdish controlled city of Kobani in northeast Syria. Turkey accused the U.S., which is occupying northeast Syria, of complicity in the attack.

A week after the Istanbul incident Turkey started to bomb Kurdish positions in east Syria. It has now threatened to (again) invade it.

A typical 155mm howitzer barrel is designed to last 1500 Equivalent Full Charge (EFC) rounds. That is 1500 rounds fired at nearly maximum range. If firing at less than max range, you might only have 0.7 EFC rounds per shot. If firing some rounds such as Excalibur or extended range HE, you may see 1.2 EFC rounds per shot. If these guys are firing 100 to 150 rounds per day, it stands to reason that tubes need to be replaced every 1 to 2 months, or accuracy suffers. It’s an artillery war, so you have to do the barrel changes. Every army has the same problem.

They’re breaking down from heavy usage. That happens with all major pieces of equipment after some time.

How efficient is the changeout? What is the equipment required? How much skill is required of the maintenance crew?

One of the reasons for the incredible logistics run by the U.S. in WWII was the standardization and modularization of the machinery.

It was NO SECRET to people who follow the military that this weapon is simply UNFIT for combat.

The question then becomes, were the generals in the Pentagon trying to send a message to Ukraine, by giving them this crap?

The US 8” was retired years ago. Maintenance hogs, projectiles outdated, requires bag charges, barrel life short compared to our main line 155mm and requires large crews. We surplused out many to Taiwan years ago.

We are now sending outdated and retired equipment, sheesh, we couldn’t supply anymore 155mm so started sending 105’s.

The last “large” howitzer was the M110. Technically it was 203mm but was referred to as 8”. That hasn’t been in use since the mid 1990s. The vast majority of armament used by the DoD is now referred to in metric.

The 8 “ sent to Taiwan was as a result of the Taiwan Staights crisis of 1958. That is ancient history.
