Perhaps Ukrainian sabotage took some of them out:

Zelensky called up new conscripts in October when in September he said no new ones would be needed so Ukrainian casualties are probably higher than we think.

I imagine some of them were peeved at being conscripted.

—”How did a third of them break down. That’s a serious issue.”

Nor exactly breaking down, they are wearing out.

Artillery barrels have a service life of a few thousand rounds. And tank barrels even less.

The Russian barrels are no different and they push them to failure. Well, that crew will never ever do that again, or anything else.

Yep. Proxy war.

Ukraine is a pawn and Zelensky gets rich.

He appears on Vogue, hob nobs with the rich and famous, goes to Wall Street, etc, etc.

To the last Ukrainian...

Without more information, this article is meaningless propaganda.

How many rounds are they designed to fire before they require maintenance?

How many rounds did they fire before they required maintenance?

How long are they designed to be down for maintenance?

Are they down longer than they are designed to be down, and if so, why?

Or Ukranian sabotage perhaps on some of them. Another post of mine addresses this.

Russia lost 50% of its occupied territory in the past 6 months with 33% of Ukraine’s howitzers in the shop?

Wow! Putin’s army really sucks!

Fragility is a constant problem with many new generation weapons systems

fortunately, this war gives us a chance to use our weapons systems under real-world battle conditions, and work out the bugs

imagine if Putin hadn't invaded and we didn't find out about these problems until it was too late!

The US hasn’t had a 200+mm howitzer in service for decades. We have mostly 155mm and 105mm.

You posted an enemy garbage piece from a slum of the Net and flooded your own thread with more enemy garbage. What a class act. Looks like it came from a third world hole like Russia.

U.S. artillery designs are not faulty. Howitzers eventually wear out and are exchanged for rebuilding. Ours are more durable and accurate than Russian junk. Russia will lose and has already lost in more important ways. That nation’s name is mud.

It’s an artillery war on both sides. Russia has had the advantage in sheer numbers, but both sides are making heavy use of what they have. The barrels wear out and have to be refurbished. You hear about how Ukraine is handling it, you don’t hear how Russia is handling it. That doesn’t mean Russian barrels don’t wear, it means no one is writing stories about how and where they repair them.

This war has a lot in common with WW1.

This is interesting reporting. It gives an insight into the problems of war fighting that Hollywood movies don’t cover.

In Vietnam, I was assigned to a 155mm Howitzer battery (self-propelled). At any given time two of our six guns were usually down, and sometimes as many as four guns would be down. We would usually wait a week or two for spare parts each time a gun went offline.
I imagine getting spare parts would be a major problem for the Ukrainians. People don’t realize that in a war, stuff breaks. All the time. And you can’t just run down to the hardware store and buy a part to fix it.

200mm=8 inch. Never heard the 8 inch called anything else.

Ukraine - Running On Empty

https://www.moonofalabama.org/2022/11/ukraine-running-on-empty.html#more
Yesterday the Pentagon announced another transfer of weapons to the Ukrainian military:

According to the Pentagon, the package includes:
Additional munitions for NASMAS
150 heavy machine guns with thermal imagery sights to counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)
Additional ammunition for HIMARS
200 precision-guided 155mm artillery rounds
10,000 120mm mortar rounds
High-speed Anti-radiation missiles (HARMs)
150 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs)
Over 100 light tactical vehicles
Over 20,000,000 rounds of small arms ammunition
Over 200 generators
Spare parts for 105mm Howitzers and other equipment

The $400 million is being sent to Ukraine through the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which allows President Biden to send arms straight from US military stockpiles.

The Pentagon is clearly scraping the bottom of the barrel.
