Three retail pharmacy chains recklessly distributed vast amounts of pain pills in two Ohio counties, a federal jury said on Tuesday, in a verdict that could set the tone for US city and county governments that want to hold pharmacies accountable for their roles in the opioid crisis.
Lake and Trumbull counties blamed pharmacies operated by CVS, Walgreens and Walmart for not stopping the flood of pills that caused hundreds of overdose deaths and cost each of the two counties about $1bn, their attorney said.

Pharmacies can refuse to fill prescriptions for anything—but they should tell the _doctor_ up-front.
Then the doctor can help the patient find a pharmacy that can fill the prescription.
The rise in physicians prescribing pain medications such as oxycodone and hydrocodone came at a time when medical groups began recognizing that patients have the right to be treated for pain, Kaspar Stoffelmayr, an attorney for Walgreens, said at the opening of the trial. The problem, he said, was that “pharmaceutical manufacturers tricked doctors into writing way too many pills”.
Lawfare / Shakedown ping.
So can we now sue the judge if the patient dies? If you can sue the doctor or drug maker or pharmacists for a death, why not the judge who delayed or denied drugs to a sick person?
Tricked doctors?!
SNORT.
Pharmacies certainly REFUSED doctors prescriptions for HCQ and Ivermectin without a problem!!
Correct—but doctors can help fix that problem.
Good doctors will find a way....
Depends. What if you’re on a script that has a history of flat out killing people who also take the script your doctor has handed you? They talk to the doctor but he doesn’t listen. Should they fill the script? Should they warn you? Or should they decline taking that kind of chance with your life?
One of the things to keep in mind is pharmacists are in the drug business. They generally are paying much more attention to the latest news on prescription drugs. They’re way more up on the news than doctors. Also you SHOULD have one pharmacist (that’s what’s recommended), and probably have more than one doctor (yea specialists). So none of your doctors know everything you’re on. Hopefully your pharmacist does.
They can’t just tell the doctor they’re not filling it. Remember you probably brought them the slip of paper. And either way you are expecting to go there and pick up the drugs. Regardless of how the decision was arrive at they have to tell you they aren’t filling it and why. Simple logistics dictates that.
“spotting doctor shopping”... ding ding ding. We have a winner! Pharmacies are the first line of defense against crooked patients and criminal doctors. Both of which are real.
My wife has been taking HCQ for decades. But suddenly CVS demanded to know why she was taking it.
When my doctor prescribed Ivermectin for all of us because my son got COVID they did the same thing. I don’t know what he told them, but they filled it.
When my wife was hospitalized with COVID pneumonia, the hospital quietly withheld her HCQ. But we had told them she has to have HCQ for a chronic disease.
How ridiculous. Ambulance chaser.
“The problem, he said, was that “pharmaceutical manufacturers tricked doctors into writing way too many pills”.”
I doubt it.
I don’t just show up at a pharmacy with a piece of paper.
The doctor calls in the prescription.
The pharmacy calls me if it is available for pickup.
If there is a problem the pharmacy lets me know what it is so I don’t waste my time going there.
What am I missing here?
Nothing’s missing, your previous post sounded like you thought the pharmacy should only talk to the doctor about it and not hassle the patient if they’re not filling it. Sorry if I misread that.
That’s part of their job. Pharmacists work WITH doctors to help ensure proper medications and doses, prevent mistakes and also abuse, and doctors depend on their expertise and help.
If you think doctors are infallible you are mistaken.
I lived with a girlfriend/ICU nurse and I can tell they make mistakes often enough - to the point of ordering up a medication that would otherwise kill the patient.
I think I hear a doctor discussing this on the Dennis Prager Show. Many pharmacies would refuse to administer drugs for the treatment of COVID-19. They would literally call the doctor and ask what the prescription was for. If you said COVID-19 they would refuse to dispense it. It’s crazy but true.
My local pharmacy would not fill my prescription for Hydroxychloroquine until my doctor added that this was for a planned overseas trip to malaria infested destinations in East Africa & Central America.
“Mother may I??”
(and the lawyers get richer & richer & richer...)
My doc found a way, I have had a supp,y of Ivermectin in my medicine cabinet for a year now just in case!! I have been on the docs supplement regimen for 2 years now and he told me u dear NO CIRCUMSTANCES to take this vaccine!! I have an immune disorder which has been in remission and he told his patients NO VAX!! He doesn’t have enough data on how this jab affects people with immune disorders, what he has seen so far doesn’t look promising and he still feels he is making the right decision for his patients!! He was in research at UCLA med for immune disorders, he was forced out because he refused the vax, he still has his private practice and says he is seeing an unusually high number of NEW patients with immune disorders and liver problems!!
Deep pockets
As often happens, attempts to address a problem using government resources result in draconian measures that are worse than the cure. In this case, those who would benefit most from a prescription of opioids will be denied and will suffer immeasurably more than necessary.
