Top Republicans McCarthy, Scalise back Stefanik as Cheney replacement amid battle over Trump

The top two Republicans in the House are behind Rep. Elise Stefanik's efforts to replace Rep. Liz Cheney as Republican conference chair as the party continues to grapple over former President Trump's future role, according to a report.

Fox News confirmed Tuesday that Stefanik, R-N.Y., is making calls to members to build support for a potential challenge to Cheney. A senior GOP leadership source told Fox News earlier this week a vote to remove Cheney is "more than likely."

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., spokesperson Lauren Fine told Fox News Wednesday that "House Republicans need to be solely focused on taking back the House in 2022... and Elise Stefanik is strongly committed to doing that, which is why Whip Scalise has pledged to support her for Conference Chair."

Punchbowl News, which first reported Scalise's support for Stefanik, also reported Wednesday that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is working to ensure Stefanik, R-N.Y., is the only one challenging Cheney.

I’d say it’s a done deal. Cheney will have to bite the dust....like it or not.

There is no “Battle” over Trump.
Cheney will get kicked out of leadership.
And WY will kick her out of her seat.
Trump curse strikes again. Bye Liz.

Wonder where these two were in February.

Oh, yeah. They decided to have a secret ballot to protect her.

Real leaders, they are!

Stefanik is a member of the Tuesday Group. If you are not familiar with the Tuesday Group, it is the who's who of RINOs that should never be allowed in the Republican Party. It was formed after the 1994 Republican take over of Congress as a moderate to liberal voice against the Gingrich revolution.

I have to seriously ask, where are the members of the Freedom Caucus and why haven't they put forth a replacement for Cheney? And for that matter McCarthy.

Scalise's support of Stefanik now clearly indicates that Scalise needs to be primaried. There is no place in the Republican Party for the blatant support of RINOs. This party is filled with a bunch of establishment pussies, unwilling to fight for the very platform of the party.

Removing Cheney from leadership is step 1 toward removing her from office.

Ugh. Stefanik is pro-Trump, but bad on almost every other issue.

She’s a Harvard educated Bush family ally. She has broken with the GOP to support gay rights, open borders, and climate change.

What feckless fools. I welcome ousting Cheney, but she’s no worse now than she was 90 days ago when leadership closed ranks behind her., and when they could have gotten kudos from the base by getting rid of her

Stefanik represents a fading district in upstate New York that has all the economic and welfare statistics of West Virginia. Stefanik is the only type of Republican who is ever going to win there.

Interestingly, I wonder if Donald Trump himself ever would have been comfortable with a lot of what the GOP stood for in 1994. I sure didn’t vote for him in 2016 because I considered him a “Gingrich Republican.”

I don't know where she got the idea that the GOP rank and file was ready to go back to Milquetoast brand RINOs like her and Mitt, but excellent analogy.

We have two conservative ladies running for a county row office, Clerk of Courts, which pays about $70K annually. They are each trying to out-Trump each other. The Jack@$$ party isn't even running a sacrificial lamb. School board candidates, who used to trumpet their teacher's union endorsement, are all trying to hide it this year. It is going to be an interesting primary on May 18th here.

We will have been living here 19 years in June and I've never seen anything like it.

easily the dumbest thing I've read this morning.

How so? Provide us with your great wisdom and defend your comment, if you dare. Scalise is clearly backing a RINO to replace a RINO. I guess you are okay with Republican establishment perpetuating itself with more of the same. The Republican Party leadership needs to be cleared out. Scalise, just exposed himself. He is now clearly one of the enemy.
