There's Good News for Wine and Cheese Lovers
The foods we eat may have a direct impact on our cognitive acuity in our later years. This is the key finding of an Iowa State University research study spotlighted in an article published in the November 2020 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
The study was spearheaded by principal investigator, Auriel Willette, an assistant professor in Food Science and Human Nutrition, and Brandon Klinedinst, a Neuroscience Ph.D. candidate working in the Food Science and Human Nutrition department at Iowa State. The study is a first-of-its-kind large scale analysis that connects specific foods to later-in-life cognitive acuity.

Here are four of the most significant findings from the study:
1) Cheese, by far, was shown to be the most protective food against age-related cognitive problems, even late into life;
2) The daily consumption of alcohol, particularly red wine, was related to improvements in cognitive function;
3) Weekly consumption of lamb, but not other red meats, was shown to improve long-term cognitive prowess; and
4) Excessive consumption of salt is bad, but only individuals already at risk for Alzheimer’s Disease may need to watch their intake to avoid cognitive problems over time.

If eating lamb makes you so smart, then Wyl E. Coyote would have caught that roadrunner by now. Eat whatever roadrunners eat and you’ll be smart and fast.
Cheese is out; I’m Lactose Intolerant. I do miss the taste.
Wine is iffy. I like Wine, but not every day in every week.
LAMB....Is a YES. I could see having it about twice a week.
I already know about ‘The Horror, the Horror!’ of too much salt, so I use less of it.
So, foods Jesus had access to eat are what are best for us.

Less salt is a good all around suggestion. Salt is bad for your heart and contributes to kidney stones. We had cut back on salt years ago but after the last kidney stone I am getting even more stringent on my salt intake.

We have cheese every morning with our smoked sockeye salmon.
I have my red wine every evening with dinner.
We have lamb about 2X per month, easy to do it weekly.
Recently, told by my cardiologist to lower my salt intake due to CHF symptons.
So, the Himalayan Salt grinders have been removed from our table and the side table by my Lazy boy and my wife is buying low salt cooking add ons/mixes. I have lost 6 pounds.
What kind of salt?

I have one and two covered. My fridge is full of all sorts of cheese, and my cabinet is full of liquors and wine! All are consumed regularly!

No I suspect salt was likely a factor. We had generally cut back on salt for our dinner meals but I still would eat snacks and foods that had salt in them.
Haven't touched alcohol since 2004. The problem wasn't so much my daily consumption as much as it was my nightly consumption.

Like no other reason for death existed in the first century other than diet.
