Zion hiker rescue: Utah sheriff’s sergeant questions circumstances that ‘do not add up,’ report says

If Courtier had used the Virgin River as a water source for the full 12-day period, Cashin said, there would have been a “high probability” that she wouldn’t have survived, because the water contains a toxic level of cyanobacteria, ABC4 reported. “If she had been drinking that water, unless she had some really high immune system, she would’ve been very, very ill and probably unable to come out on her own,” Cashin told the outlet. “She either took a lot of water with her or had another clean water source that was near here, but the Virgin River is not that source.”

But will it destroy the toxins created by the bacteria?

“Exposing a water bottle to sun might kill the organisms eventually, but the water would still be toxic.”

and looks like only LifeStraws that include a carbon filter will remove the excreted toxins ...

Sunlight will kill bacteria. Fill water bottle and leave in sun.

I would not try that if it were me. My experience is sunlight can accelerate growth. That's why late summer is always bad for algae.

Halazone or boiling works. They also have some cool new pump filters that work great.

"Lifestyle will not remove the toxin that cyano bacteria excrete."

No mention of giardia? I've seen warning signs about drinking the park's surface water.

Maybe she just wanted to be rescued by some buff forest emergency squad guy and was disappointed it took two weeks to find her.

This reminds me of the Colo. couple who’s child was supposed to have been swept away in a plastic blow-up house.
Only to find it was a hoax.

Sounds like she was assisted by a benevolent Bigfoot and was so appreciative she didn’t want to divulge its existence.

What about a tie-dyed Thai tie?

That's no worse than drinking Chai Tea and doing Tai Chi.

When I worked as a land surveyor in Arctic wilderness, I was advised to always carry a deck of playing cards.

"Why?", I asked.

"To ensure rescue if you're ever lost" "

How's a deck of cards going to help.?"

"If you're hopelessly lost, start playing Solitaire. It won't be long before someone's looking over your shoulder telling you to move the black Jack onto the red queen."

Perhaps that thumb-sized amethyst she was wearing in the tie-dye photo protected her?
