Washington and Lee (VA) faculty vote to change the university's name

Washington and Lee University faculty passed a motion to remove Robert E. Lee from the name of the small liberal arts college in Lexington.

The motion — the first time for W&L faculty to make such a recommendation — will be sent to the board of trustees.

W&L President Will Dudley called a special meeting to discuss the motion at the request of the faculty affairs committee. More than 260 faculty members attended the virtual meeting late Monday afternoon and 79% of them voted for the motion.

“The university’s name rests with its board of trustees, and there are no current plans to change it,” said university spokeswoman Drewry Sackett.

The school was named for George Washington, an early benefactor, and Lee, the former Confederate general and president of the university who is buried in the chapel at the heart of campus. Washington and Lee University is the school’s fifth name since 1749.

The three permanent Black faculty members at W&L’s law school called for the removal of both Washington’s and Lee’s names from the school’s name, according to a letter sent to Dudley.

“It is worth exploring why the faculty has decided to make a collective statement on Lee and why the faculty has not included a demand to drop Washington in their petition,” according to the letter written by Brandon Hasbrouck, an alum and associate professor of law. “It is no longer acceptable, profitable or convenient to be associated with Lee but it is for Washington.”

An amendment was proposed to include the removal of Washington’s name, but that motion failed.

Faculty members also discussed the importance of having wider discussions about the overall campus climate, said Zoila Ponce de Leon, an assistant professor of politics.

“A name change is a symbolic gesture, but

If the university is associated with such racists:
Why didn’t the faculty just vote to close the university?

Why didn’t they resign?

Seems to me they want something for nothing. Why not put their money where their mouths are?>>> Yes and why did they go to work for such a racist college?

Including Traveler. How sad. Such a move, if it happens, is beyond ignorant. It just goes to show you how liberal the faculty has become.

They took his land to make Arlington Cemetery.

Technically, the land was inherited by his wife from her father, George Washington Parke Custis, with the stipulation that she could never sell it, and that it then pass to her son, Custis Lee. Robert E. Lee never had any ownership of the property. In 1877, Custis Lee sued the government and won back the estate, then turned around and sold it to them.

The name would be Douglass with a double ss at The end . Douglas with one s could be for Stephen Douglas, who was the northern democrat in the 1860 election.

Although naming it after Stephen Douglas would be a delicious irony.

They want to change it Karl Marx University, and the faculty approves now that they have tenure and can’t be fired for stupid ideas and no normal man could ever dream possible.

Lee was a Patriot too.

Lincoln offered him the position of Secretary of War. Would Lincoln have offered that position to someone who was not a Patriot?

Stop buying into the media garbage.

People should take some time to read Lee’s biography.
His record at West Point
His service in the Mexican American war
His character and experience which caused him to be offered the leadership of the Union and Confederate armies
The importance of states rights in 1860 thought
His instructions to his troops at Appomattox
His friendship with Grant
His service as President of Washington College
His efforts at reconciliation.
Then look in the mirror and see how you measure up!

IDIOTS. The name Washington & Lee is sort of poetic and has been the name of the university for a LONG time. Why is it suddenly necessary to change it? If this is indicative of the libtard moron mindset of the faculty nowadays, perhaps it is good to avoid letting your kid attend this place. Then let the “woke” asses comprising their present faculty call it whatever they want-—Al Sharpton U, Louis Farrakhan U. , Keith Ellison U, Hank Johnson-Guam U., etc. Another fine university down the toilet.

It came into being to support southern Episcopal dioceses and remains owned by those dioceses. One of the leaders of the time was a Bishop who was also a Confederate General. What a target for the left.

I vote Washington & Lee change the faculty. Start by firing the Leftists they’ve employed. After all, they wouldn’t want to keep accepting paychecks from a University named partly after a Confederate would they?

I was thinking something more in line with the intellectual caliber of the student body and professors; something like “SCOOBY DOO U”.

I think that would suit them perfectly.
