Supreme Court rules federal civil rights law protects LGBT workers

Washington — The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that it is illegal for an employer to fire someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, delivering a major victory in the fight for civil rights for LGBT people.

The court's 6-3 ruling extends the scope of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which bars discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin and religion, to include LGBT people. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Neil Gorsuch, who authored the majority's opinion, joined the liberal wing of the bench in ruling that "an employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender violates Title VII."

Yikes realize this means the SC just declared pedophiles as a protected class, right?

That’s exactly how their reasoning works because sexual attraction is a protected CLASS

Come on.

Statutory Rape or Child Endangerment/molestation are still crimes. A predator would not be protected. No one is protected from committing a crime.

You can sit around and dream up all the crazy examples you want but they will be .00000000001% of probability and the decision effects a much broader subset of people, who are good, community people and not the miniscule subset of perverts.

There are also laws on the books against sodomy too that were struck down by the civil rights legislation too as well as many criminal laws against sexes using the wrong bathroom.

All struck down today.

Deal with it - pedophilia is a sexual choice and therefore, now, a protected right.

Of course when gay marriage was legalized people like you were screaming they just wanted legal rights and churches and church schools would be unaffected.

How’s that turning out for ya.

I’m not bothered in the least by gay marriage. I don’t care for them using the term “marriage” as opposed to civil unions or some such label. But the law doesn’t cheapen my marriage in any way nor does the marriage of many gay people I know who are in committed, stable relationships.

They don’t threaten me in any way at all. The insecurity surrounding so many straight people regarding gay marriage has never made any sense to me.

How has your marriage been infringed as a result?

Disappointing since it doesn’t follow the Bible.

In your example, then yes. A protected right from being FIRED. Not a protected right from committing a crime or a protected right from being fired IF you commit a crime.

Your logic isn’t correct. This isn’t a matter of post hoc ergo propter hoc.....

I wont typically defend Roberts, I was done with him after Obamacare in 2012, but there is the possibility that the reason he ends up on the liberal side on some of these 6-3 decisions is because as the Chief, whenever he’s in the majority he gets to choose who writes the opinion. It may be the case that he knew he was losing Gorsuch and decided to have Gorsuch actually write it instead of one of the court’s liberals. So although I agree that Roberts is a complete squish, it’s possible that he’s just making strategic decisions rather than completely abandoning any underlying principles he may have.

Of course it doesn’t.

Liberal traitor on this site.

If you cannot accept the reality of America’s moral decline and it’s association with our present catastrophe, you aren’t a real conservative.

People like you never get it. Never will. I wouldn’t want fakes here, but I’m not Mr. Robinson.

Yeah I guess so. As soon as they elaborate why a teacher doesn’t share their values, they are out of luck, and must keep that teacher on. This ruling means religious values don’t mean shite.

For me, it’s not that it is a tranny supporter that is most troubling. I strongly disagree with the lie of transgenderism, but if change via a normal process like state referendum were being discussed, I’d at least listen. What really ticks me off is when so-called “conservatives” react emotionally and applaud activist decisions like this because they support the cause or they are worried about election returns. That isn’t conservative in any sense.

You DO realize religious conscience just got ejected? A Christian school now MUST hire an alphabet soup of sexuality.

You should be able to fire or hire someone for any damn reason you please. It is the employer’s job to do whatever they want with.

And yes I despise the who alphabet soup of sexual identifiers. They make me want to vomit.

Deciding that marriage is whatever anybody says it is (and polyamory is coming) destroys the concept of society.

Marriage in the legal sense has NEVER been about love. It’s been about procreation rights and child rearing.

Always.

I don’t care if two gays want to hang out or a dozen at a time and have a nightly orgy. That’s their right. But it doesn’t make them “married” and the government shouldn’t be involved in regulating what a personal relationship is.

Only in child rearing.

How does that harm gay relationships?

He applauds it.

The first amendment still overrides title vii so churches can’t be mandated to have transgender priests or perform gay marriages (though that hasn’t stopped the gaystapo from trying)

It MAY affect church schools and church offices as there’s been mixed rulings on that.

I don’t get it, weren’t they already covered by being
either men or women???
The more delineations, the more loopholes you end up with.

No, they must NOT. What the must NOT do, is not hire them solely based upon sexual preference. Do you not understand that?

It is SO easy to create a reason not to hire someone. I’ve done it many, many times. This decision does not create a forced hiring practice.

Well, you can’t. Not since 1964. Deal with it.

Please prove to us that homosexuality is a birthrihght, and not simply bad behavior. I’ll be waiting.

If I stand in my driveway does that mean you have to call me a car?
