NEW JERSEY — More retailers are leaving the state – leaving more than 1,200 layoffs in their wake as New Jersey continues to deal with what's been called a nationwide "retail apocalypse."
At least 24 stores also have announced in recent days that they're planning to close very soon. The news comes after a number of major national chains had already announced closings in New Jersey and elsewhere (see lists below).
Many of them are popular chains, too, that either ran into bankruptcy or decided to downsize stores "in order to preserve the whole company and save the jobs of 4,300 families," one company executive told Fox Business.
How many jobs will ultimately be lost, in total, is unclear. At least nine businesses in New Jersey have announced a total of 1,266 layoffs. But that number is expected to rise because some stores that announced closures haven't yet addressed the impact on employment.

Stores are facing stiff competition from on-line retailers. Fedex and UPS and Amazon are doing gang buster business.
Buy from Amazon.
UPS or Fedex will deliver overnight...
Some of these closings wouldn’t also happen to have anything to do with indoor malls and some strip malls becoming havens for gangs of teens, would they?
Probably state regulations.
Christie’s NJ economy was not really spectacular, and Murphy’s is not so so either.
Most New Jerseyans don’t even know who Christie’s successor is.

The silver lining is that 1,200 people have been incentivized to get out of New Jersey. Could be the best thing that ever happened for them.

Like NJ is business friendly. I’m surprised the governor didn’t force the stores to remain open. You can’t even pump your own gas in NJ. They force gas stations to hire attendants to do it. Then again, the progressive morons in NJ would probably set themselves on fire if they pumped their own gas.
That is what does it for me.
The only way to get me back is to borrow Amazon's idea of a store where one must use a credit card to get in. A mall where entrance to the parking lot required showing a credit card and having your picture taken with the card (to prevent using stolen ones) and then individual card swipes to get each individual into the mall (no cost, but the card requirement stops the feral Utes cold).
Phillipsburg Mall on rte.22 in P Burg has closed. The only remaining store is a Kohls which is actually a separate building. This mall has been going downhill for at least 10 years and the reason is probably on line shopping and the inability to compete. There really were no problems with bad actors hanging around the place. It was not such a bad place to shop at one time as it was never overcrowded and had some decent stores.
So the supply lines from China really isn’t a good economic plan. Gee, Trump told you that.
High minimum wage for shopkeepers. Amazon killing brick and mortar using stock market dollars to subsidize its growth and overhead expenses (they are predatory on pricing). And NJ taxes the crap out of its residents, so they probably can’t afford to shop anyway.
Why do people from your state of Pa. come to N.J. for their gas. Could it be that even though we can’t pump our own our gas prices are 25 to 30 cents cheaper per gallon? I am not going to defend my state because it is pretty oppressive but gas prices are not one of our many problems.
I loved that place in the 80’s when they had Cindy’s cinnamon buns.
Shrinkage issues, too, I’ll bet.
