Senators predict deal will be reached for impeachment trial
The Washington Times ^ | Updated: 10:04 a.m. on Sunday, December 22, 2019 | Alex Swoyer

Senators from both sides of the aisle appeared optimistic Sunday a deal would be reached by party leaders to hold an impeachment trial in the Senate once lawmakers return after the holidays.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer failed to reach a negotiation last week over the rules and procedures for the likely trial, with Democrats demanding the chamber call witnesses.

Mr. McConnell, though, is insisting President Trump have the same impeachment process afforded to President Clinton where the Senate agreed to hear from the House managers presenting their argument supporting the articles of impeachment and allow the president’s team to respond before the senators wrestle with the issue of witnesses.

“I think there will be an agreement and this trial will go forward,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

All of the negotiations, though, remain at a standstill while lawmakers are away for the holiday break, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi hangs onto the articles of impeachment passed Wednesday charging the president with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The California Democrat said she is waiting to pass the charges to the Senate until she is guaranteed there will be a fair trial — with more witnesses. Democrats have said they want to hear from Mr. Trump’s chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and his former national security adviser John Bolton, among others.

“I frankly don’t think the speaker has the right to do this,” said Sen. Roy Blunt, Missouri Republican.

“Once the House has spoken, the speaker doesn’t get the decision as to whether or not she transmits that decision to the Senate. In my view I think we will have this all handled once we get back in January,” Mr. Blunt told CNN.

I’m afraid a deal will be reached. I’m afraid Senate re-pukes will capitulate to Nancy and allow hearings and witnesses and will prolong this impeachment witchhunt for several more months.

But even if this happens, there will be advantages. Americans will become even more disgusted with Democrats and Trump’s popularity ratings will continue to increase.

Crying Chuck will NOT get to call additional witnesses!!!

Mitch has the high ground here in that the House already blew their opportunity to exploit their bias charges, AND FAILED TO MAKE THEIR CASE!

If there is any “surprise” testimony, then they’ve surely gone about all this the wrong way. Pelosi wouldn’t have gotten to the point where she makes herself look like a jackass at this late stage, if that was the case. She’s holding a poker hand with a pair of twos and she knows her opponent has at least three aces in his hand ... so her strategy is to fall asleep at the table and hope the opponent loses his cards before anyone puts their cards on the table?

“I think there will be an agreement and this trial will go forward,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Klobuchar once again demonstrates that she’s a low IQ fool: there’s no way on earth that the GOP Senate will “negotiate” with Pelosi or Schuhmer ... McConnell and Graham both have publicly and repeatedly flat out stated: no witnesses just like in the 1998 Clinton impeachment trail because we’re going to adopt the same trial rules used then, namely, the House puts on its case, the President’s team puts on their defense without any witnesses by anyone, and then they vote to acquit or convict ... period ...

AND the GOP Senators have said that if the Dems don’t like that: tough luck because we don’t want to conduct an impeachment trial anyway, so sit on your impeachment articles as long as you like and we’ll be here if you change your mind. oh, and we LOVE the fact that you’re sitting on the articles because the longer you sit on them, the bigger the fool you look like, and the more foolish and fraudulent your sour grapes impeachment looks like to the public ...

“And he needs to stick with that like glue, and chant it over and over on every news channel, particularly if it seems that Dems are resisting it in any way.”

and that’s exactly what they are doing, Senate Judiciary Chairman Graham did that again this morning: no witnesses because we’re going to adopt the 1998 Clinton impeachment trial rules ...

I believe the more likely scenario here is that Schumer is presenting his stupid witness list as a negotiating ploy to protect Biden. Trump's legal team is almost certainly going to have Hunter and Joe Biden at the top of their witness list, and this is Schumer's way to negotiate trial rules with NO witnesses called.

Any trial where a Mick Mulvaney or a John Bolton is called as a witness while Hunter Biden is NOT called would be a clear travesty in the minds of anyone other than rabid anti-Trump partisans.

The Senate GOP should vote to give Pelosi a time limit for transmitting the articles to the Senate - no longer than a month.

Failure to meet that deadline means the same Senators voting for the deadline will vote to dismiss all charges, because justice delayed is justice denied.

Everyone should make this their talking point and paint the Dems as not being fair by wanting to treat Trump differently and deprive him rights afforded Bill Clinton at his impeachment.

There's only one reason they want new witnesses in the Senate trial and that's because Dems are on a fishing expedition. The House Dems made a case, voted for these articles and now they're stuck with it.

Trump and McConnell don’t want to go that route. They want a trial so he can be cleanly acquitted.

McConnell is only interested in protecting blue state Senate GOPers up in 2020. He couldn’t care less about POTUS.

McConnell’s GOP senate hasn’t lifted a finger to gather a single fact on the CIA backed coup currently raging in the executive branch of a GOP POTUS. He’s had 3 months and done exactly nothing. Expecting he will do any more than the minimum required on impeachment is a fools errand.

It's quite simple -- the impeachment wasn't fair, if it had been fair, there wouldn't need to be more witnesses. Mitch needs to get the Pubbies to pass a resolution, which in short, says, send the list of allegations over, now, or shove them up your ass.

Yeah, I don’t understand the House wanting the Senate to call witnesses that they themselves didn’t call. It makes no sense. If the Senate lets the House dictate ANYTHING to them, they are too stupid to live.
