COLORADO SPRINGS — Biology textbooks used in American high schools do not go near the sensitive question of whether genetics can explain why African-Americans are overrepresented as football players and why a disproportionate number of American scientists are white or Asian.
But in a study starting this month, a group of biology teachers from across the country will address it head-on. They are testing the idea that the science classroom may be the best place to provide a buffer against the unfounded genetic rationales for human difference that often become the basis for racial intolerance.
At a recent training in Colorado, the dozen teachers who had volunteered to participate in the experiment acknowledged the challenges of inserting the combustible topic of race and ancestry into straightforward lessons on the 19th-century pea-breeding experiments of Gregor Mendel and the basic function of the strands of DNA coiled in every cell.
The new approach represents a major deviation from the usual school genetics fare, which devotes little time to the extent of genetic differences across human populations, or how traits in every species are shaped by a complex mix of genes and environment.
It also challenges a prevailing belief among science educators that questions about race are best left to their counterparts in social studies.
That view stems from the history of today’s racial categories, which arose long before the field of genetics and have been used to justify all manner of discriminatory policies. Race, a social concept bound up in culture and family, is not a topic of study in modern human population genetics, which typically uses concepts like “ancestry” or “population” to describe geographic genetic groupings.
But that has not stopped many Americans from believing that genes cause racial groups to have distinct skills, traits and abilities.

The black is a better athlete to begin with, because he's been bred to be that way. Because of his high thighs and big thighs that goes up into his back. And they can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs. And he's bred to be the better athlete because this goes back all the way to the Civil War, when, during the slave trading, the big, the owner, the slave owner would breed his big black to his big woman so that he could have uh big black kid, see. That's where it all started.

But, but, I thought the scientists at the NYT have already said that biology has not yet explained those differences.

The Asians at my college were RIDICULOUS SMART.
Or were they??
I got basically straight As and maybe a B when I ACTUALLY STUDIED A LOT in college.
But still, they grasped intense material faster, it seemed.
And almost ALL of them got As down the line!!
I do think they are on average smarter.
I got a D average first semester then I met a beautiful girl and I asked her the secrets to getting As.

I agree. There is no real value in examining any of this. No real value at all. All it can do is further Balkanize the classroom and the country. And I say that as a trained scientist (chemistry).

Much of that can be explained by cultural differences. I knew a Chinese family back in the day. Both parents were immigrants. They had five children.
And here’s how they handled their kids’ homework. All five kids sat down at the kitchen table right after school, and began their work. And no kid was allowed to leave the table until all five were done. In some respects it was a group effort, with the older kids helping the younger ones.
These kids were second generation Americans. I wonder if their grandchildren will even do homework. America often has that effect on people.

Before you know it, the lefties will insist there are more races than genders.

I HATE that you are right about your comment on America.
OF COURSE not across the board but in general.
We WOPs are actually on the UPSWING with that.
First generation were tradesmen. Didn’t see WHY anyone would go to college.
2nd generation graduated high school and some went to college but still a LOT of blue collar BUT they saw the need for college to take things to the next level.
3rd generation actually stepped up studying and shooting for higher goals.
4th generation is beginning the downturn you’re talking about.
GOD only knows about 5th generation.
People would be surprised how many of us are still 2nd generation and there are a lot of 3rd.
The culture differences do explain a lot.
I have a few Asian friends who still have 3 generations under one roof.
BIG HOUSE of course. But I like that.
This already feels like settled science. Blacks should win half the Nobel Prizes and the only reason they don’t is racism.
